Well intentioned, but uniformed. I fear this advice could cause someone with a mental health problem to try to push through their illness without much needed professional help. You can read the Bible daily etc (or whatever your religion’s sacred text is) and the intrusive thoughts will not go away... I know from experience. Living as meticulous a moral life as possible will not fix religious OCD, because religious OCD is not about religion... it’s not about God. It just appears to be because that’s the way the illness is presenting. By treating OCD, however, we will be healthier and more able to focus in a meaningful way on our spirituality. Is it natural for a person who values spirituality to worry at times about their relationship to God or how they’re practicing their beliefs? YES. The difference with OCD is that it is compulsive, obsessive fears and actions... it’s circular thinking that never reaches resolve. It’s a daily terror that ultimately (left untreated) can make every religious/spiritual action/experience almost unbearable. Don’t guilt yourself for having religious OCD, it’s not a spiritual problem, it’s an illness that can turn into a spiritual problem if you treat it as one
