Orphaned at the age of 11, Daniel first traveled through the Southwest in the mid 1840s with enemies of the LDS people, the Missouri militia. He found appreciation and admiration for the inhabitants of the West, the Mexican People, the Ute Indian, and various Indian peoples. He acted as an emissary, an interpreter, and a negotiator between white settlers, various indigenous peoples, Spanish Mexicans, slay traders, government Indian agents, and leaders and prophets of the Latter-day Saints. He lived in the West from 1847 until 1915.

    125. Second Sweetwater Rescue

    Your trials, heartache and catastrophes are blessings in your life. Through them the Lord refines us and allows us to see what is most important in this life. More than 220 immigrating Saints died along the trail with the Willie and Martin Handcart Pioneers. Many lay in unmarked graves. 135 years later many of those men, women and children who had sacrificed their life in obedience to their ecclesiastical leaders, had not had their Temple ordinances completed. They had been left behind twice. The Riverton Wyoming’s “Second Rescue” was an all out effort to identify all those who had died along the trail. Then they had to perform thousands of Temple ordinances in their behalf. This is an amazing story of Rescue, both temporal and spiritual. GOD LOVES YOU ASK HIM.

The meager wilderness skills he had learned from his father helped him survive. Sleeping in hollow logs, bear dens, and under rocks he spent the nights alone cold and hungry. He had no one to talk to but God. This is a story of days gone by where folks put their own lives on hold to help out a neighbor or friend in need.
