The Theology of Birth No One Taught Us l Annie Vanderheiden

There are many experiences in our lives as humans that transform us fully into an entirely different person. Times like our wedding, we wish we could live again. Others, perhaps like the death of a parent, no one could pay us enough to go back. These experiences can show us better who God is and cause us to love him more, or sometimes they shake our faith and cause us to doubt his care. Birth and postpartum is one of those times of life for me. I’ve talked to hundreds of moms at this point, and of all the women I’ve talked to, not one has ever said to me, “My first pregnancy, birth, and postpartum went exactly how I expected.” Today I’m talking to Annie Vanderhieden, a writer and editor at Risen Motherhood, about how the pain of postpartum showed her more clearly who Jesus is. I know you’ve said that you loved babysitting and always dreamed of being a mother. In your imagination, what did motherhood look like? What was your birth experience like? When was the moment you realized that what you pictured was going to be different from your reality? How did you find a theologically sound view of the fall helped comfort you when things didn’t go as planned? What did life with a newborn look like for you? Are there moments that stand out to you? What did God show you about Himself in those moments? How Do We Own Less and Love More? with Joshua Becker

As a young mother, someone gave me a copy of one of Joshua Becker's books, and it totally turned my world right side up. We were living in the decade where everyone was talking about minimalism and essentialism. I had thrown myself wholeheartedly into the movement, but something seemed not quite complete until I read "The More of Less." Suddenly, it all made sense. I wasn't throwing away all my stuff just because it was time to clean, and I wanted to burn the house down. I wasn't living with less just for the sake of having less; I wanted to live without distraction toward a purpose. I'm super excited to introduce you to him today. I pray that as you listen to us chat, you'll also be challenged toward a purposeful faith as well!  You had a turning moment early in your family life that showed you the benefit of minimalism. Can you tell us about that?  How did your personal story connect to what you saw in the Bible?  It's tempting for us to want to become minimalists when we are sick of picking up our kids' stuff, but what are the spiritual benefits of living with less?  It's been a while since you had that moment... how has it changed the way you live?  You can find Joshua Becker's book "Uncluttered Faith" or "The More of Less" on his Instagram for more! JOIN US: Around Our American World for family-style learning!! What Really Matters at the End of the School Year? with Mandy Davis

Something I think that is important to do as we wrap up the school year and head into the summer is to assess our why. It doesn’t matter whether your kid is homeschooled, public-schooled, or private-schooled; summer is a big vibe shift. Even people who have a more traditional ebbs and flows to life sense a change in rhythms as summer approaches. I’m going to talk to former public school principal turned homeschool mom and creator behind Home Built Education Mandy Davis. We are going to answer each of these heart assessment questions for ourselves and hope that as we brainstorm, it generates intentionality in you as well. I hope that before or after every question, you will pause and answer it for yourself as well. When your kids look back at how they were raised, what do you hope they say?  “When your child is an adult, and someone says, 'Wow, you were homeschooled, what was that like? What do you want them to say?'" What do you want them to say about you as the homeschool parent? What brought you the most joy, being with your kids more? What are some practical things that have shifted that you think have helped? (for me it’s been literature-based learning) As a parent, how have your kids seen you be an example of a lifelong learner? Are You Being Sabotaged by “Revenge Bedtime Procrastination? with Jennifer Dukes Lee

Maybe you love mornings, maybe you hate them, but we can't deny that the way we start them affects the rest of our day. It's so well known that there's a saying, "Well, she got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning." So today, Jennifer Dukes Lee and I are going to chat about what it looks like to love your morning! Jennifer is an author and editor for Bethany House Publishing! She and I are in very different stages of life, so this should make for a fun and hopefully encouraging conversation, no matter how you feel about mornings!  Have you always loved the morning? What does your morning look like? Should everyone start their mornings the same way? What are some different ways to start a morning?   What does it look like to start your morning the night before?  If someone can only change one thing, what do you think would make their morning better?  You can find Jennifer Dukes Lee's book "How to Love Your Morning" or his Instagram for more! JOIN US: Around Our American World for family-style learning!! Is Satan Limitless? with Kyle Worley

I don't know about you, but I grew up with the 90s plastic set of armor that had each piece labeled with the "Armor of God" label. I would put on our breastplate of righteousness before heading out to play. I can't remember who, but I do have this memory of someone getting their head stuck in the helmet of salvation. Sometimes, when we've gamified a part of the Bible like that, it can be easy to blow over what it's telling us and lose a bit of the awe at what is being promised. I felt like that a few years ago when I started studying Luke. Maybe I shouldn't admit this publicly, but I was sure it was going to be boring because I knew the stories. However, I was BLOWN away and moved to tears by so many nuggets during my time there. So together, let's take a look at the Armor of God with pastor and Bible teacher Kyle Worley. Kyle is the host of the podcast Knowing Faith, which just hit 12 million downloads. The vibe there is theologically rich but I always laugh at least once while I listen, and he brought that same vibe here last time we talked, so I think you're about to learn something good and maybe laugh!  I just finished studying and delivering a talk on 2 Timothy. In that passage, there are so many cool illustrations: warrior, farmer, runner... so why have you become so interested in the Armor of God? Why does this illustration in Ephesians stand out to you more than others?  Culturally, we don't like to talk about the devil. Or if we do, we make him red with a pointy tail. What role do you think standing against the schemes of the devil has in the life of a believer?  Do you think we think about spiritual warfare too much or not enough... do you think the devil is involved in things like the stop lights being the wrong color, or me spilling my open carry coffee down the front of my shirt?  I love that the verse makes it clear that we don't gather the armor for ourselves or build it from scratch. It's a gift. Why is that distinction important? How does it change the way it looks to live that out? (What does it look like if we think we have to make our own armor, vs we trust that God's already given it to us as believers?)  Okay, so in light of that... it does say we have to put it on? Why do we have to put it on? Why aren't we just supernaturally strapped in? Does that matter?  As Christians, can we live holding our armor and not be equipped with it? Why do our kids need THIS lesson?  You can find Kyle Worley's book "The Dragon Slayer and His Super Special Suit" or his Instagram for more! JOIN US: Around Our American World for family-style learning!! What If Your Strength Is the Problem? with Joanna Kimbrel

My nickname as a kid was “muppy.” I know, I know what an oddname for a child… but it’s because I screamed in the face of anyone who would try to help me, “Muppy Do it!!” translation ”Let me do it.” How often do we as adults try to go through life with that same attitude? God wants us to find rest in him, and we want to do it all. Author and Bible Teacher Joanna Kimbrel is going to talk to us today about how she learned to be satisfied in the help and love of God, even in anxiety-inducing moments. What do we usually use to medicate those anxieties? What is the result of turning to the wrong things to find security?  What does it look like to trust God with things that can't be fixed this side of heaven? Most people I know, and my guess is most people who listen to this podcast, want to remember God and find satisfaction in him, but just forget. Raising Responsible Men in an Irresponsible World with Champ Thornton

If you've listened for a while, you'll probably have gathered I have 3 sons. Because of that, raising Godly sons is a topic near and dear to my heart. I want to say from the top: just because I talk about something I'm working through with my sons doesn't mean I don't think you've experienced it with your daughter. I only come from the reference point of having sons. That being said, from the number of comments I've received about the nerves of steel, I've developed raising them, and the level of activity you would find in my house may exceed what you anticipate from the peaceful conversations we have on this podcast. The cultural messages around us press men into malformation. Maybe you grew up with "boys will be boys" messaging you want to press against, or maybe you are trying to raise a "wild at heart" adventurer. But more than those things Biblically, Champ Thornton points out, there's something even more important we need to center our parenting of boys around.  Can you tell us about yourself and your current stage of life?  How did your personal experience form you to talk about the celebration of being a boy?  As parents, we get bogged down in the weeds about what kind of boy we want to raise. An athletic boy, an artistic boy, a gentle boy, a tough boy, a creative boy etc. Out of all those lenses to see our sons. What is most important to focus on?  There are a lot of conversations around boys in school and the way many of them struggle with the amount of time required to sit. How do we encourage our sons to use their energy positively? What can parents and teachers do to help them?  How do the life of Jesus and the fruit of the Spirit help us balance and harness the potential of our sons and turn them into strengths?   What are some lens shifts and phrases we can use in our parenting to celebrate the boy that God made our sons to be?  You can find Champ Thornton's "It's Good to be a Boy" here JOIN US: Around Our American World for family-style learning!! The Surprising Biblical Joy of Being a Woman with Jen Oshman

I know some girls were super excited to transform from little girl into woman, but I was one of the many who was not excited by that prospect at all. I loved climbing trees and riding my horse. Everything that came along with being a "lady" felt like it would get in the way. This was made significantly harder because I was constantly told how men were uniquely made in God's image, but not how I was uniquely made in God's image. This wrestling nearly cost me my faith more than once. None of this intro is a surprise to Jen Oshman. She is an author and Bible teacher I've come to respect and trust deeply, especially in the realm of complicated conversations. We've had several conversations about the way the church talks about women, their roles, and neglects (often by accident) teaching about the unique ways that women reflect the image of God. *If you're looking for us to find a hill and die on it today, that's not the conversation you're going to get, but I hope that by the time you're done listening, you'll have a deeper understanding of who you are as a woman or gratitude for the woman in your life made in God's image! For a long time, I believed that every way I was different from being a man i was also different from reflecting God's image, since he came incarnated as a man, and God refers to Himself as Father. Why do you think we tend to get stuck in that rut?  What are some ways God made women to uniquely reflect him? Is there a reason that we don't talk about these well in the church?  The best lies are subtle distortions of the truth... are there historical trends that led to that distortion?  What can we learn from the stories of the women God chose to include in the Bible?  God uses some material imagery in the Bible. My personal favorite is that God describes Himself as a mother bear robbed of her cubs. I had always thought of my role as "Biblical mother" to look more like a Madonna and Child painting with a sweet half smile, but I don't know that anyone who knows me well would describe me as serene. How do some of these other pictures given in the Bible help us to see women more holistically?  How do we find true joy when we understand what it means to be created in God's image? How do we pass that on to our daughters?  You can find Jen Oshman's "It's Good to be a Girl"  or her women's study "Very Good."
