    Sonoran Desert Garden - Stewardship, Education, and Foraging

    Sonoran Rosie has a lifelong passion for the Sonoran Desert and its native plants. After discovering a lack of natural desert-inspired aromatherapy, Rosie studied local herbalism and began creating herbal skincare, self-care, and haircare using sustainably hand-foraged desert botanicals like creosote to capture the scent and wellness benefits of the desert. Committed to giving back, Sonoran Rosie supports local conservation organizations and businesses while promoting a deeper connection to the desert. In 2022, Rosie expanded this mission by opening Arizona Poppy, a vibrant downtown Tucson shop featuring the work of more than 75 local artisans and celebrating the creativity, beauty, and community of the Southwest. In 2025, Rosie wrote Seasons of the Desert, a guide that teaches readers how to identify, sustainably forage, and build a deeper connection with the Sonoran Desert through herbal remedies, recipes, and the wisdom of its native plants. Now, Rosie is on to a new adventure through land stewardship. She is purchasing acres of untouched Sonoran Desert in Three Points, AZ with fellow herbalist Wren, founder of The Nohm Collective. Together they will conserve the natural ecosystem & native plants already on the land while growing even more medicinal and edible desert plants.     Borderlands Restoration Network, Economy of Resource Conservation, Restoration Efforts on the Border - W. Rodrigo Sierra Corona - #008

    I am joined by Rodrigo Sierra Corona, the executive Director of Borderlands Restoration Network; an organization that strives to grow a restorative economy by rebuilding healthy ecosystems, restoring habitat for plants and wildlife, and reconnecting border communities to the land through shared learning.  The organization envisions connected borderlands where rivers flow, plants, wildlife and cultures thrive, and communities develop an inclusive restorative economy where a sense of places inspires a sense of purpose. The organization performs vital natural resource conservation work in the Sky Island’s of Southern Arizona and Northern Sonora via land acquisitions for conservation and wildlife, watershed restoration, native plant propagation, education, and community connection.  The Madrean Archipelago, or commonly known as the Sky Island region, is a hotspot for biodiversity - hosting unique ecosystems and wildlife found no where else.  During the conversation Rodrigo examines land and water use in Southern Arizona - illustrating how natural resource conservation contributes positively to the economy.     The Arizona Trail: How It’s Built, Maintained, and Protected with ATA Executive Director Matthew Nelson

    What’s the best kept secret in Arizona? What’s it take to build and maintain an 800 mile long National Scenic Trail from Mexico to Utah? Looking for an adventure of a lifetime? On this episode I chat with Executive Director of the Arizona Trail Association, Matthew Nelson. The Arizona Trail Association’s Mission is to build, maintain, protect, promote the Trail, engage with the public in working together to care for the Arizona National Scenic Trail. In this conversation, Matthew describes the efforts in progress set out to accomplish this mission. Matthew takes us on a guided tour of the Arizona Trail highlighting spectacular landscapes, values, and experiences along the way. He shares origins of the trail, describing the process of establishing an 800 mile long passage from Mexico to Utah. During the conversation Matthew explains the value the Trail brings to the individual, local communities, the State of Arizona, the economy, wildlife, and environment.     Jay Dorr: The Sawtooth Steward - #004

    For over 50 years, Jay has built and maintained hiking trail access in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and surrounding Wilderness areas in the Salmon-Challis and Boise National Forests. To this day, Jay continues to serve on a Wilderness Trail maintenance assignments with organizations such as The Pulaski User’s Group, Idaho Trails Association, and the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Association. In this episode Jay tells stories from his many years in the Sawtooth mountains and shares his ancestral history originating from the late 19th century Wood River Valley.     Allan is a career archeologist and currently serves with the non profit called Archeology Southwest.  In this episode, Allan illustrates the tools and practices originating from the day to day lives of of peoples from the past. Allan then tells the story of his passion in recreating 'ancient technologies', shares his experience as a career archeologist, and provides resources for listeners interested in becoming further involved in the world of archeology. Archeology Southwest practices 'preservation archeology', which is a holistic and conservation based approach to exploring and protecting heritage places while honoring their diverse values. They compile archeological information, interpret it, then share it with the public and decision makers.
