    Brushing shoulders with addiction

    The story of David and Goliath is one of the most iconic and celebrated tales from the Old Testament. Virtually everyone vaguely acquainted with the Bible knows that David, as a young boy, slew the giant Goliath. The story is an inspiring example of how the underdog could defeat someone much bigger than him, against the odds. This tale still lives on and through every one of us. We all have a Goliath in our lives. Goliath represents the challenge, difficult situation, trauma, sin, heartache, obstacle, blockage, and or addiction in our lives. We are called to step into the footsteps of David. Brushing shoulders with "Addiction" has been my Goliath- one whom I acknowledge every day, but refuse to be enslaved by again. Today, I am grateful for my Goliath, for it has burnt and carved me into the person I am today. Today, I choose to trust God, today I choose to take up my place as His daughter. Today, when I feel weak, I trust that God shall give me the strength and wisdom, and truth to guide me through whatever circumstance I am facing. Today, I choose to not be ashamed of my past, nor be weighed down by the aftermath of scars that remains. Instead, my scars represent wounds that healed! My scars are evidence that anything is possible through Him. Our testimonies are powerful healing tools and needs to be shared. Allowing God to use our painful passed,not only offers motivation and hope to others, but also opens up new ways for God's voice and message to be heard.

    Conversations with God

    It is in the small things that we do and say, or even don't do that has the most impact, especially when done consistently, as they create habits. There is a saying: "That which you focus on expands"...Our focus is our attention, our time and, our thoughts. From these our physical, spiritual, and mental states; lifestyle, and well-being derives. Having a relationship with God requires our focus, as well as desire to have a relationship with him.

    Grief.

    Grief. One of the switches of life that is unavoidable. Grief hurts; so bad that we want to shy away from it, hide it and even pretend that it is not there. Grief is not a switch that we choose to turn on or off in our lives. It is an inevitable part of the aftermath of something that interrupts our lives. Something that we have no control over. Powerlessness, anger, guilt, blame and often accompanies grief and are part of the grieving process. A process that consists of connected stages that collective has also been called and known as the healing process. In the Bible, grief is often mentioned. There is one verse that must be my favorite one, it is also the verse that I chose to be engraved on my father's gravestone. Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

    Refusing to surrender

    Contemplation of life and how much we want to participate in it happens to us all. We are often taught not to voice or express ourselves and forced to create personas that support the social status of acceptance. Then there is the aftermath of trauma, for which disconnection has become the only available way of being, whilst self-medicating soothes the pain. At night we nail our eyelids to the ceiling, attempting to avoid our fears chasing us into our dreams. It takes courage to refuse to surrender to a life unlived, especially at times when you find that you are standing alone, whilst the pillars of those you trusted crumble- replaced by random faces that soon become your closest fans. Someone special in my life once said to me that the only way of failing is not trying. I believe that we all should recognize that we have only been as strong as others expected us to be. I believe that once we dismiss these miss calculated lies about ourselves, and decide to take our lives into our own hands - that not only shall we discover our real, true capabilities, but also that we have strived and achieved much higher goals than that set by others before.
