When I started marketing my own media publishing company, I discovered my true passion - SEO. SEO stands for "search engine optimization" and it's how websites and other digital properties are set up and presented to search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, Youtube and more - so that customers who do not KNOW a business or service by name, and when looking for a solution to the problem seemingly "stumble" across the perfect fit for them. My story starts at the point when I decided to offer the same energy and effort to help other businesses who I thought were like me and my own business.

    Symptom Chasing vs. Single-Variable Testing Deconstructing the Semrush ChatGPT Study

    As an experienced SEO tester, when one can isolate factors to test hypothesis - its always the conclusion where one can get tripped up. I think there is a huge, unacknowledged blindspot in the Semrush ChatGPT reasoning study published this summer. The glaring flaw is no consideration was made as to how these models have different computational and time limits. One uses parametrized knowledge which allows for lots of pre-computed (cached) resources that once captured the Instant mode can produced them without incuring repeating costs. The same is not true for the Thinking mode. They aren't different search engines - they have different budget constraints of time and cost to extract.     You've Really Only Got 5 Seconds or You Are Burning Hostload- Season 6, Ep 31

    Google updated their developer documentation on their crawl budget and there is so much in here. Google made some previously optional recommendations into hard requirements now. They defined HOSTLOAD as "the total amount of time your server spends holding connections open for Google, factoring in both the number of parallel connections and their duration." Which made my benchmark test come up against Dave Smart's server-side delay test which came to the conclusion that Googlebot says for more than 5 seconds. Who is right? Turns out we both technically are because we were testing different things. Googlebot renders for 5 seconds if its not waiting for anything. And the Googlebot can hit pause on the rendering and keep the browser on hold for 30 seconds. One tests for how long the rendering window is actively rendering and the other tests for how long Google will keep the browser on hold. Guess which one kills your Hostload?     This week I share my latest breakthrough, the answer to a question that's been in the back of my mind. Why Do LLMs Require Symmetry - the 1:1 parity between html and paint? Turns out it has everything to do with security protocols for LLMS. This insight came from a post on Bluesky by John Mueller - "A properly made website works well for AI agents ... and search engines, and LLMs, and above all, for actual people. If you're trying to fix accessibility issues by making a separate "agent-friendly" version, you are just building technical debt. You'll have to redo it multiple times. Just fix it." Went down the rabbit hole based on a comment left in response. "This is not what we have found in the wild.We re-route AI (not search) to a machine layer, written and formatted for AI ingestion and inference. It works. We took an invisible ad agency (the most established in the market) to top 3 agencies on money prompts in 15 days. Not a one-off." When I started marketing my own media publishing company, I discovered my true passion - SEO. SEO stands for "search engine optimization" and it's how websites and other digital properties are set up and presented to search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, Youtube and more - so that customers who do not KNOW a business or service by name, and when looking for a solution to the problem seemingly "stumble" across the perfect fit for them. My story starts at the point when I decided to offer the same energy and effort to help other businesses who I thought were like me and my own business.
