Talk, Unleashed

Cathy Brooks

What motivates people? Why do they do what they do? What does leadership actually mean in today’s world? Good questions, right? That’s what Cathy Brooks, thought. And it’s why she created Talk, Unleashed – a podcast of candid conversation. Sometimes as commentary. Sometimes as discussions with fascinating people doing remarkable things. Topics range widely and all of them have one thing in common. Dogs.

My Peaceful Day - Walk for Peace

Another episode inspired by the Venerable Monks and the Walk for Peace.  This week - a simple concept that cuts through complexity. The simplicity, and complexity of inner peace. It’s easy to be swept up by circumstances these days. Easy to allow the froth and frenzy that is the world to determine what kind of day you’re going to have. It’s exhausting. What if it’s not? What if it doesn’t have to be that way and doesn’t have to be hard? What if you have full agency to determine your own day? Spoiler alert - you do. And in this week’s episode, that’s what I share. In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it’s time for radically authentic conversation. Conscious communication is simple, but often isn’t easy. That’s why Cathy Brooks created Talk, Unleashed – a weekly podcast of radically honest conversation about — everything. Whether her own musings or in conversation with industry leaders, each episode invites curiosity.  Curiosity not about what people do, but why they do it. Who they are and what makes them tick. It’s about digging underneath to reveal the thing that is most true - that we are more alike than we are not. A mix of solo episodes where Cathy shares her insights and experience or Cathy engaged in conversation with fascinating humans doing amazing things. No matter the format - it’s unvarnished, radically honest and entirely unleashed.  This podcast compliments Unleashed Leadership, the coaching business through which Cathy works with symphony orchestras, corporate clients, and individuals to help them unleash and untether their leadership and connect with others in a way that truly engages. #peacefulday #walkforpeace #venerablemonks #alokathepeacedog responsibility #accountability #leadership #dogbehavior #dogtraining #consciouscommunication #leadership #Conversation #TalkUnleashed #UnleashedConversation #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash

Mindful Traffic - Walk for Peace

There are few things that will torpedo my sense of serenity faster, than traffic.  And I know I’m not alone.  Now imagine hundreds of people, at night, it’s dark and very cold. The road is narrow, crowded and there are piles of snow everywhere. Traffic comes to a dead stop. And no one gets mad. That’s what happens when masses of people get a chance to hear a message of peace from a group of monks and then take those learnings into the world. And that’s the scene for this week’s episode. When the Student is Ready - Walk for Peace

I don’t know when I heard the phrase for the first time - “When the student is ready the teacher appears.” I do know I didn’t have much of a clue what it really meant until much later. I guess you don’t know until you know. Another pithy quote that’s familiar and took a while to understand.  It takes some work and willingness, but I’ve found that over the years it’s more clear to me more quickly just when a thing or a place or - most often - a person is in my path because I have something to learn. It used to be the greater the friction, the greater the lesson. I’m glad to report that an increased volume of self-awareness means, thankfully, that the friction doesn’t always have to be THAT bad for me to clue in. Kind of like the experience that led to this week’s episode. In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it’s time for radically authentic conversation. Mindful Canine - The Walk for Peace

For dogs mindfulness isn’t really a thing. Mostly because it’s just how they are. It’s the very foundation of their existence.  Humans, however? Not so much.  In another episode inspired by the Venerable Monks and the Walk for Peace, a discussion of mindfulness - specifically as it relates to the happy horsesh*t concept of multi-tasking. Which, by the way, turns out isn’t really a thing. Whether it’s in my own life, in the way I interact with others or how I engage with my dogs, being present isn’t just an important thing. It’s the only thing. In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it’s time for radically authentic conversation. Clean the Mirror - Walk for Peace

I don’t want to ruin the humor of the story - but let’s just say that in this week’s episode, I share wisdom from Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara (the monk who initiated the recent Walk for Peace across the US). That wisdom has to do with bathrooms, toilets, lovers … and the dangers of multi-tasking. It has to do with how a mind that multi-tasks is like a dirty mirror in the bathroom. I’ll leave it there and let you enjoy. In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it’s time for radically authentic conversation. Aloka the Peace Dog

Boy do I wish the episode were an actual interview with Aloka.  No doubt he’d have magnificent wisdom to share. Who’s Aloka? Great question. If you didn’t follow the recent Walk for Peace - he’s the dog who accompanied the Venerable Monks on their journey. They found him on another walk - that one in India. He was a stray and now he lives with Bhikkhu Pannakara at their Temple in Fort Worth, TX. In one of his talks to the public, Pannakara spoke of Aloka, what his name means, and what the story of his coming to be with them in the first place means in the big picture. That’s what this episode is about. The Walk for Peace

Peace, doesn’t sell.  We may click on kindness, but overall cash follows cruelty.  If it bleeds, it leads. That famous practice (allegedly started by an editor of The Miami Herald in Miami, FL) for “real” media. Take away any guardrails media used to have in place (things like verifying content before publication, being mindful of impact of what they publish) and go to the cesspool of “citizen” journalism and there are no guardrails. So what happens if we just stop? Literally, stop.  In October 2025 a group of monks set out, on foot, from Fort Worth, TX. Their message - peace. Their intention - to walk 2300 miles across the United States, ending up in Washington, DC.  Their journey - the Walk for Peace - took them along the southern part of the US. They took a left in Georgia and headed up through the Carolinas and through Virginia to DC. Led by a 44-year-old former Motorola Engineer turned Buddhist Monk, the Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara, nineteen monks made this journey. They spoke little and only when it mattered. In their silence, the message. Oh and they had a dog with them - Aloka the Peace Dog. I had the great privilege of seeing them twice when they were near and then in Richmond, VA. At the first gathering I set my phone to record and then put it away to pay attention. This week’s episode is an only slightly edited version of what I heard. (I edited out addresses from local law enforcement.) So this week, a special edition of Talk Unleashed. Words of peace, and a perspective on your cell phone that will hopefully make you laugh. Even more hopefully make you think. And most of all, consider changing some behavior. It's also worth noting, they had arrived at a church for capacity of 400. More than 2000 people showed up, so rather than admit some folks and keep others out, we all stood outside, they set up a speaker and Pannakara came outside. Note just how quiet people are. How respectful. It. Is Possible. Crap in. Crap out. Or just ... Crap?

No small irony that sh*t in some shape or form has dominated this year’s episodes. Quite a lot of crap in the world these days. This week, it’s a look at crap in - crap out. How I start a thing, is how I continue a thing. This relates to many things - relationships, production quality and … dog training. With this episode’s big milestone - EPISODE 200 - it felt appropriate to consider a topic that’s been on my mind lately. How things proceed based on how they begin, and - just as importantly - when course correction is necessary, how on earth does one do that? In a world where what passes for radical honesty usually means someone is just letting things fly outta their pie-hole without much care for others, it’s time for radically authentic conversation. Conscious communication is simple, but often isn’t easy. That’s why Cathy Brooks created Talk, Unleashed – a weekly podcast of radically honest conversation about — everything.
