Gettysburg 1863: A Civilian View of the Battle | Bo Brinkman & Samuel Roukin Interview

➡️ Help history. 2 minutes for 7 questions 🫡 At the Gettysburg Film Festival, Scott and Jenn interview director Bo Brinkman (Gettysburg, 1993; upcoming Gettysburg 1863) and actor Samuel Roukin (Turn: Washington’s Spies) about portraying the Battle of Gettysburg through the experiences of civilians—especially women and children—rather than traditional battlefield spectacle. Brinkman explains choosing a 9-year-old lead to heighten the emotional impact of war, slavery discussions, and a home invasion, and describes the film’s visual idea of the house as a “witness,” often framed through windows and the passage of time across all of 1863, including aftermath. Roukin shares how visiting the cemetery and walking the vast battlefield deepened his sense of the human cost, echoed by accounts of visible blood evidence at local sites. 00:00 Gettysburg 01:18 Film Festival Intro 03:05 Trailer Reactions 03:37 Why a Nine Year Old as a Lead Actress? 05:46 Acting as a Father 07:34 History with Waffles asks Why Gettysburg Calls 10:56 History Was Earned 11:26 Salvaging History asks about Researching Characters 13:09 Bloodstains and Forensics 14:28 Ghost Stories on Set 15:48 Scripting Fact vs Fiction 18:30 Salvaging History asks about The "Window Witness" 19:27 Final Reflections and Thanks 🎥 Video version of this podcast ------------------------------------------------------- ⬇️ Help us keep the show going and explore history with us! ⬇️ TheHistoryRoadTrip.com 🧳 Plus...get free travel resources in your inbox. ------------------------------------------------------- 📧 contact: talkwithhistory@gmail.com Talk with History is a global Top 40 History podcast on Feedspot!

Gettysburg Film Festival: Behind the Scenes Where History Meets Hollywood

➡️ Help history. 2 minutes for 7 questions 🫡 Scott and historian Jenn recap their Easter weekend 2026 trip to the Gettysburg Film Festival, describing Gettysburg’s high-energy atmosphere, panels, and meetups with the history community. They organized a Thursday-night gathering of 10–15 content creators at The Gettys Burger, then attended a “Turn” panel about Washington’s Culper Spy Ring with actors including Samuel Roukin (Captain Simcoe). They covered a panel on the upcoming film “Gettysburg 1863,” directed by Bo Brinkman and starring Roukin, highlighting its town-centered perspective and production details, and recorded a small-group interview with the director and actor. As media, they photographed major events including a George Washington panel with Ken Burns, Chris Jackson, and Rick Atkinson, and a sold-out Hamilton panel with Chris Jackson, Phillipa Soo, and Okieriete “Oak” Onaodowan. They also toured the battlefield with Addressing Gettysburg’s Matt Callery, captured sunrise photos at Little Round Top, and share local food and coffee recommendations. 00:00 Festival Weekend 01:37 Show Intro and Hosts 03:02 Creator Meetup at GettysBurger 05:14 Friday Morning 05:38 Turn Cast Spy Ring Panel 08:51 Revolution Theme and Reenactors 10:26 Gettysburg 1863 Movie Panel 14:30 Surprise One on One Interview 15:47 George Washington Panel Setup 17:17 Media Pass Behind Scenes 20:22 Sunrise Little Round Top 21:49 Hamilton Panel Surprise Rap 25:00 Battlefield Drive With Addressing Gettysburg 27:10 Gettysburg Tips Food Spots 29:24 Festival Farewell 30:23 Closing Reflection 📍 Google Maps to Gettysburg 🎥 Video version of this podcast ------------------------------------------------------- ⬇️ Help us keep the show going and explore history with us! ⬇️ TheHistoryRoadTrip.com 🧳 Plus...get free travel resources in your inbox. ------------------------------------------------------- 📧 contact: talkwithhistory@gmail.com Talk with History is a global Top 40 History podcast on Feedspot!
