From Novel to Comic Book: The Story Behind Complete Darkness with Matt Adcock

What happens when a dark sci-fi novel becomes a comic book? Matt's original novel is a near-future dark sci-fi story built around a wild question: What if humanity discovered that Hell could actually be mapped? After artist Carl Brown read Complete Darkness and suggested that it would make a great comic, Matt began a completely new creative journey—learning how to translate a novel's ideas, characters, and world into sequential art. Matt explains how working with an artist changed the storytelling process and why comic writers have to let the artwork carry so much of the story. EP: 153 Powerscape: The Indie Comic Where Sports Decide Who Gets to Live

What does it take to create an independent comic book from the ground up? On this episode of Talkin' Comics Podcast, AJ Reimann sits down with actor, writer and comic book creator Donal Thoms-Cappello, creator of Powerscape, to talk about the journey from an idea that began years ago to a fully realized independent comic. Powerscape is set in a future where humanity has rebuilt itself after catastrophic environmental collapse. A mysterious energy called CORE keeps cities alive, but that energy must be replenished. The solution? Cities compete in combat-based sporting events, with the outcome determining who receives the energy needed to survive. Donal explains where the idea came from, how his background in acting and theater influenced his approach to comics, and how he eventually teamed up with artist Stefan Toshev. We also get into one of the most important parts of making comics: collaboration. Donal and AJ compare their own experiences working with artists and discuss why giving artists room to bring their own ideas to the page can make a comic much better than either creator could have imagined alone. Donal is currently preparing a Kickstarter campaign for the Powerscape Volume One trade paperback, with the campaign expected to launch around mid-October according to the conversation. And yes...
