    For 64 years, Marvin Meshack did not merely witness the history of oil and gas, he helped write it.

    God breathes life into creation while great leaders breathe knowledge, courage, opportunity, and human flourishing into our people and industry. For 64 years, Marvin Meshack has not merely witness the history of oil and gas and energy, helped write it and improved our success. I'm extremely honored to sit with Marvin, Ryan Sanders, and Josh McCollom for this conversation with a living legend. Marvin began working in the Halliburton laboratories in Duncan, Oklahoma, in 1962. He spent 36 years studying, testing, and improving the chemistry field crews depended upon. Before computers, digital frac vans, or one person controlled an entire spread from a screen, calculations were done by hand. Men stood at pumps in brutal weather, shifting gears, throttling engines, and operating equipment in the open. Guar and cellulose gels could lump enough to require screens. Early crosslinked systems improved through pressure, patience, problems, and the occasional batch that looked more like Braum's shakes than frac fluid. Marvin watched horsepower multiply, chemistry mature, acidizing advance, horizontal drilling unlock formations once considered uneconomic, and an industry repeatedly predicted to disappear keep finding new ways to produce energy. Yet the most powerful chemistry in the room was not mixed in a blender. The margarita chemistry came later. The real chemistry was the bond between experience, humility, friendship, faithfulness, and honor. Ryan and Josh shared how they called Marvin when a fluid system would not cooperate. Within minutes, he could ask the right questions, isolate the issue, and help a crew finish the job. Marvin never guarded what he knew. He shared his research, wisdom, and field experience so others could succeed. Nearly 89, still working, and married for 67 years, Marvin never claimed the credit alone. He pointed to the mentors, chemists, engineers, field crews, friends, and family who carried the work with him. One sentence captured his character and perhaps the culture our industry needs most: “If you have a problem, we all have a problem.” That may be the most important formula he shared. This episode explores chemistry, completions, energy, mentorship, marriage, and the future of oil and gas. But it is more than a technical conversation. It is an archive, a classroom, a thank you, and a reminder that progress has parents. Few conversations have made me feel the weight of our industry's history quite like this one. Most of us hear “human trafficking” and think it is happening somewhere else. Another country. Another city. Another neighborhood. Another family. This issue is closer than most of us want to believe. What stood out to me about redM is that they do not lead with fear, politics, shame, or hopelessness. They lead with awareness, education, community, practical action, and hope. redM exists to resource, empower, and develop people who want to fight human trafficking in sustainable ways. A problem this large cannot only be left to someone else. It takes parents. It takes businesses. It takes industry leaders. It takes communities. It takes people willing to pay attention. This conversation reminds me again that out energy industry has such a powerful role to play. Oil and gas people understand hard work. We understand difficult environments. We understand long odds. We understand what it means to show up, build teams, solve problems, and keep moving when the work is uncomfortable. That same mindset is needed here. This is not about everyone becoming an investigator, rescuer, or expert overnight. It is about learning the signs. It is about supporting survivor organizations. It is about helping local chapters grow. It is about using our networks, resources, influence, and relationships to push back against one of the darkest problems in our society. The redM model gives everyday people a place to start. You can give an hour. You can show up to an event. You can connect a sponsor. You can help raise awareness. You can support a local organization already doing the hard work. Most of us do not need our lives to look big. But we do want our lives to do something big. That is what I felt in this conversation.     Steve Schofro drove from California to the Talking Energy Show studio to record a different kind podcast and recorded a conversation I will not forget. Oilfield Tailgate is honored to support #safety leaders. He came carrying years of research, personal experience, safety concerns, health battles, exposure history, documents, photos, files, and a desire to help people understand risks that often arrive quietly before they become obvious. Our conversation started with lithium battery awareness, but quickly became bigger than batteries. We talked Moss Landing. BESS. Thermal runaway. Recalls. Fire response. Smoke chemistry. FAA concerns. Energy demand. Natural gas. Nuclear power. Data centers. Grid resilience. Recycling. Resource reality. Steve has thoughtful warnings, hard earned wisdom, field experience, and a researcher's appetite for details most people scroll past until the headline gets loud. A tool battery swells. An e bike burns. An EV recall appears. Smoke shows up in an airplane cabin. A large energy storage facility catches fire. A community suddenly needs answers. Batteries are simple until batteries start doing battery things. Energy storage sounds clean until siting, scale, smoke, chemistry, suppression, wind direction, emergency response, insurance, and community trust all walk into the room wearing steel toes. Steve's message is not panic. It is preparation. It is not anti battery. It is pro awareness. It is not anti progress. It is pro responsibility. The future is already here. It is sitting in phones, tools, vehicles, job sites, substations, ports, warehouses, airplanes, and energy storage facilities. The question is not whether we move forward. The question is whether we move forward with enough truth, training, transparency, and source backed education to protect the people standing closest to the consequences. This episode is more to me than a video, podcast, or forgettable conversation. It is about protecting my community, our people, and our environment.     John Brinkman, President of Imbibitive Technologies. Hydrocarbon absorbing polymer IMBIBER BEADS!

    ️ “Wait… where did the liquid go?” That was my reaction about three seconds into a demonstration at a HazMat conference in Edmond, Oklahoma. This was my conversation with John Brinkman, President of Imbibitive Technologies. On the table in front of us was a container with some small white particles in it. They looked like salt or sugar grains. Nothing special. John picked up a bottle of paint thinner and poured it into the container. I expected the liquid to pool at the bottom. Instead…the liquid disappeared. Not evaporated. Not wiped up. The free liquid phase was gone in seconds. John smiled and said: “Once the liquid embibes into the polymer, the liquid phase is eliminated.” Here's what actually happened Those tiny particles were IMBIBER BEADS®. They're oil-sensitive superabsorbent polymers. Most people know superabsorbent polymers from disposable diapers, which absorb water. These beads do the opposite. They are engineered to absorb organic liquids like: • crude oil • gasoline • diesel • solvents …and they ignore water completely. The chemistry is wild Each bead is a solid polymer sphere roughly 150–400 microns in size (about a grain of salt). When hydrocarbons contact the bead: • the liquid diffuses into the polymer matrix • the bead swells several times its original size • the hydrocarbon becomes locked inside the polymer The result: No free liquid phase. Why that matters.. Most spill cleanup materials today are adsorbents — think polypropylene pads. They coat liquids on the surface. Meaning the hydrocarbon can still: • drip • spread • release vapors IMBIBER BEADS® eliminate the liquid phase, which can: • reduce secondary contamination • lower hazardous vapor off-gassing • simplify containment and recovery The craziest part? This chemistry was invented in 1968 by polymer chemist Dr. Richard Hall. More than 50 years ago. Today the technology is being applied to: • oil spill response • refinery containment • stormwater filtration • hazmat cleanup • oil-water separators Even more interesting… Hydrocarbons captured in the beads can be used in energy-from-waste systems producing 15,000+ BTUs per pound. Cleanup material → recoverable energy. This is why I love stepping outside the oil & gas silo. When chemists, engineers, hazmat responders, and energy operators collaborate…you discover technologies that change how problems get solved. Sometimes the most disruptive technology in the room…is a polymer bead smaller than a grain of salt.
