Born to migrant worker parents, Durazo became one of California’s most influential labor leaders, serving as Executive Vice President of UNITE HERE International and later as the first woman to lead the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. She went on to serve as Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, National Co-Chair of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, and was elected to the California State Senate in 2018. At the time of this conversation, Butler was already one of California’s most influential political strategists and labor leaders. She later went on to serve as a United States Senator representing California. Butler is a partner at SCRB Strategies. She previously served as President of SEIU Local 2015, the largest local union in California, and as President of the SEIU California State Council, where she helped lead the successful fight to raise California’s minimum wage to $15 an hour. She has also served as a senior advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris and remains one of the most respected strategists and organizers in California politics.
