Tiffany emphasizes the importance of communicating to students and being present in classes. Both guests stress the importance of extending grace and to incorporate technology judiciously.     Teaching Tips 50th Episode Celebration

    It’s hard to believe that GCU’s first and longest-running podcast is turning 50!     Ryan Hughes & Katherine Burton Pt. 2

    Joshua Sugata and Mark Trollinger dig deeper into the mysterious world of curriculum as they continue their discussion with Instructional Designer Ryan Hughes and Curriculum Developer Katherine Burton. In this episode the roles within curriculum design & development are discussed as well as how collaboration with other departments contributes to the program. The importance of professional development and the importance of effective learning strategies are discussed regarding their impact on curriculum design. They discuss practices that focus on how the brain works and aim to make it work harder in learning new concepts. Techniques such as retrieval practice, interleaving, pre-testing, space practice and elaborative interrogation are discussed. This process not only ensures the list of requirements the College requires are incorporated into every class, but also creates consistency in learning objectives and outcomes regardless of the modality. Nate’s unique teaching style also allows for him to successfully balance the use of humor, while remaining sincere and effective within the classroom. This episode will focus on behavioral health, neuroplasticity, how to deal with life situations in class, and a special drop-in guest! Featured Guest Info: Nate has worked in the behavioral health and education fields for 10 years, and is currently a Faculty Manager in Faculty Training and Development at Grand Canyon University (GCU) in Phoenix, AZ. Nate also teaches as an adjunct instructor in Behavioral and Mental Health Sciences at GCU as well as at Glendale Community College. He holds two Master’s degrees, one in Addiction Counseling and the other in Professional Counseling. Nate also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Ministry from University of Northwestern in St.Paul, MN. Nate has worked in ministry for over 11 years, including serving at a homeless shelter and as a Young Adults Pastor. His passion is discipleship and outreach, teaching Christians about their identity in Christ! Nate regularly leads teams around the city to pray for others and train in power evangelism.

Through her 12 years of experience in higher education, she has attended multiple conferences and has spoken to many faculty regarding topics that enhance and encourage faculty to move forward in their own professional journey in the classroom.
