    Climate Change gets Serious

    The IPCC, or Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its most recent report on 9 August 2021.   This podcast looks at some of the findings and why we need to start becoming very serious about how we live, how we create energy and where we get it from.   The climate is changing, much faster than at any time in history and there is a serious risk that we need to get on top off it or we will suffer serious consequences.  We have the means to decrease the impact we have and to create a better world for future generations.    Dr. Paul Dorfman, senior researcher at UCL and Mathew Hampshire-Waugh, author of Climate Change and the Road to NET-ZERO, explain how we can use existing technologies to change the way we capture energy and create a massive new financial market.

    UBI and the Dignity of Work

    Critics of Universal Basic Income say it detracts from the dignity of work, disincentives people from working and makes them lazy. The UBI critics say that there is value from working that transcends remuneration and if we give people something for nothing, then something else will be taken from us; there is no such thing as a free lunch and money for nothing carries the price of the loss of dignity. In this episode the experts discuss their findings and show that these concerns are often founded on a two-tier system.  Few people argue that those who have inherited wealth lack dignity because they receive money without working. So, does UBI create laziness or does it create opportunity for those who are creatively minded, or for those who seek further education, or indeed would-be entrepreneurs?

    Minsky was a 20th century economist who spotted the debt cycles that the economy goes through.  His research attempted to provide an understanding and explanation of the characteristics of financial crises, which he attributed to swings in a potentially fragile financial system. In other words he 'saw it coming'. He was also a fan of UBI or universal basic income and how it may be able to address the boom and bust nature of the current economic system.
