Most of life and faith is lived in the tension between the two extremes. On this show, we look at what many of us were taught growing up in evangelical churches, weigh it against what our current culture is saying, and try to find what Jesus has for us in the tension between the two.

What does biblical masculinity actually look like?
There's been a lot of talk recently about the femininity of the American church. In this week's episode of the podcast, we answer an important question a listener sent in:
What the heck does Biblical masculinity look like?

The hardest part of loving your neighbor
Why is it so dang hard for people to love their neighbor? It seems like on of Jesus's easiest commands. But if 'love your neighbor' is so easy, why do we suck at it so often?
This week we look at two ends of the pendulum for why it's hard to love our neighbor and try to find a way to get better at it.

Does the Bible actually say only God can judge us? (or how Tupac got it wrong...)
Tupac told us only God can judge us.
But does the Bible actually say that?
This week we expand on how we love people like Jesus and look at what the Bible says about "judging" other people.

How do we actually love people like Jesus?
You hear it all the time - we just wanna love people like Jesus.
But what does that actually look like?
This week we look at the tension between speaking truth and loving people and look at how Jesus did both as our example moving forward.

We need to talk about the new prosperity gospel
It's got cooler clothes and a better marketing plan than the prosperity gospel we grew up around, but it's potentially just as dangerous.
In the opener to Season 10, we talk about how the American church has swung the pendulum from young, restless and reformed all the way to the other side and how we live in the tension between the two.

An unsexy conversation about finding contentment (plus an update on the future of the show)
This month we're not tackling anything controversial or hard hitting. Instead, we talk about what it looks like to find contentment in the midst of life's anxieties and how a simple biblical phrase can take on new meaning.
And we give you an update on the future of the show.

A must listen!
I started listening to Tension when it was originally Unlearning Youth Group. I found the podcast a few seasons after it started and was instantly hooked! I went back and listened to previous episodes and couldn’t wait for the new episodes to release. I even shared the podcast with my best friend, who went to youth group with me during junior high and high school. We both couldn’t stop talking about how much we could relate to the issues brought up in the podcast and how encouraging it was to find a space that speaks to those issues.
Tension has been no different and I’ve enjoyed the transition away from solely youth group issues to overall church issues and tensions we encounter as Christians. I constantly struggle with the tensions between my small hometown evangelical beliefs and the deconstruction that’s happened throughout my adulthood.
Thank you for creating a space for those of us who love Jesus, but are trying to figure out how to live within the two extremes. It’s truly such a struggle to deconstruct and hold onto faith, when so many people leave the faith altogether. I’m forever grateful for your wisdom, compassion, and dedication to living the truth in the tensions of life.
Last Listen
I’ve been listening to the podcast (faithfully) since 2021, and I’ve always enjoyed the honest discussions around subjects that affect my life. I don’t believe I’ve missed an episode since I started listening. Unfortunately, I believe I’ve listened to my last Tension podcast. I understand, coming from a youth group background, that some of the humor drifts that way. I get it. The last episode contained some humor that made me feel like this podcast wasn’t geared for female audiences. For a few seconds, it felt like I stepped into a locker room. I felt instantly out of place. Not all things that come to mind need to be spoken, and not all things spoken need to be left in the podcast. I hope you both continue to have a successful podcast. The discussions you have are important, but I encourage you to get to know your audience a bit better.
The Tension is real
Thanks for tackling both current issues and historic challenges of applying Christian principles to American cultural practices. I’m sure there is tension in every cultural context, but the current divide in America is bringing out the worst at both ends of the spectrum. Jesus says to love your fellow believers, and also love your enemies. Weirdly today we Christians are both. Keep keeping it real. Thanks!
