Term Talk

Nicola Di

I'm so glad you're here, I'm your host Nicola. 🩵✨ Term Talk is a podcast for primary education, made in Australia and written for teachers everywhere. It is grounded in the belief that teachers don't have all the answers and that meaningful professional growth happens through curiosity, collaboration, research-informed practice, and honest reflection. Early in my career, I wished for a mentor to guide me through uncertainty in teaching. What I had instead was curiosity and a deep drive to keep learning, asking better questions, and growing through experience. Through personal experiences, thoughtful conversations, and reflective insights, each episode explores what it really means to: ✨Keep learning through mistakes + challenges in education. ✨Ask better questions + engage more deeply with educational research. ✨Reflect honestly on teaching practice + professional identity. ✨Build confidence as an educator without pretending to have it all figured out. This is not a podcast about overnight success or polished teaching solutions. It is about progress, experimentation, and choosing to begin, even when teaching feels uncertain or messy. Term Talk embraces the human side of teaching and creates space for educators to feel supported, empowered, and confident to lead, learn, and thrive in their own authentic way. Thinking routines, without the performance

🤔💭 Thinking routines became a thing you're supposed to be doing. There's a poster in the room next door, someone mentioned them in a staff meeting, and when you've tried them, they felt a bit flat. The class went through the motions, and you weren't sure anything changed. This episode is about the gap between the routine as a poster and the routine as a real shift in how children think. A thinking routine isn't an activity. It's a way of making invisible thinking visible, and it only works when the room is safe enough for children to show you thinking that isn't finished yet. Let's unpack why routines produce performance in unsafe rooms and genuine thought in safe ones, why one routine used often beats ten used once, and how to start this week with something small, spoken, and shared. ✨ In this episode: Why routines feel flat: compliance versus actual thinking. The scaffold's real job: slowing thinking down enough to be visible. Why see think wonder works: separating observation, interpretation and curiosity. The chain again: connection, safety, thinking, then tools. One routine, used often, out loud: the habit of mind approach. One thing to try this week: one routine on one small moment. Free resource: a one-page guide to three thinking routines to start with, what each is for, and when to reach for it. The fast finisher is telling you something

🤓 'I've finished.' Four minutes in. And now the rest of your lesson becomes supplying entertainment to the kids who work fastest. This episode is about why the fast finisher has been misunderstood. A child who finishes in four minutes isn't a logistics problem to be managed with the early finisher box. It's feedback. They're telling you the ceiling of the task was too low, or that they're ready to move on, or that the work felt like something to get through rather than get into. Each of those is useful information, but only if you read the fast finish as a signal instead of plugging it as a hole. Then the practical shift: designing depth into the task itself instead of bolting a second activity beside it. One built-in extension line, and 'I'm done' turns back into 'I'm thinking'. ✨ In this episode: Busy is not stretched: what the early finisher box actually teaches.Finishing fast is data: three things it might be telling you.Low floor, high ceiling revisited: tasks that open instead of end.The worked example: one sentence task, ceiling raised in one line.Three phrases that reopen thinking: show me the why, find another way, convince me.One thing to try this week: one task, one built-in extension. Free resource: a fast-finisher extension prompt set, question stems that deepen any task without planning a second one. Free with a free account in the Hub! They are children, not adults

🫣🚫 A child melts down over something small, and a tired voice in your head says the quiet thing: 'they should be able to handle this by now'. This episode is about the expectation underneath that moment. We expect children to manage feelings we have never actually taught them to name. Emotional regulation isn't a trait some children have and some don't. It's a skill, and like every skill it has to be taught, modelled and practised before anyone can do it alone. I walk through what's actually happening inside a dysregulated child, why a feeling you can't name can only be acted out, and why co-regulation, borrowing your calm before they can build their own, is the real mechanism behind learning to self-regulate. Then the practical layer: naming feelings out loud on a child's behalf, using an emotion wheel as a shared language rather than wall decoration, and why the calm you hold in those moments is some of the most skilled and draining work in teaching. ✨ In this episode: Regulation is a skill, not a trait.A feeling you can't name, you can only act out.Co-regulation: why children borrow your calm before they own their own.Why matching their intensity always backfires.Name it, then they can claim it: building emotional vocabulary in real moments. The invisible cost of staying calm, and why it deserves naming. One thing to try this week: name one feeling out loud before you do anything else. Differentiation Was Never Meant to Mean More Work

🗣️ Say 'differentiation' in a staffroom and watch the shoulders drop. Somewhere along the way it stopped meaning good teaching and started meaning more: more worksheets, more groups, more versions of the same lesson, more of you spread thinner. This episode takes the word back. Differentiation was never about making more things. It's about going deeper into one thing. I unpack why the three-versions approach triples your planning while quietly sorting children into fixed lanes, what a low floor high ceiling task actually looks like in practice, and why the hardest differentiation isn't on the page at all. It's the stream of small in-the-moment decisions you make all day, the most skilled and least visible work you do. If differentiation has been sitting on your shoulders as one more thing you're not doing well enough, this one is for you. ✨ In this episode: Why three versions of a worksheet isn't differentiation, it's admin. One rich task, many ways in: low floor, high ceiling design.A worked example you can steal for maths tomorrow.Differentiation as a decision, not a document. The in-the-moment judgement you've been using all along without naming it.One thing to try this week: one lesson, one question, one tweak. Why Critical Thinking Needs Emotional Safety First

You ask a rich, open question and you get silence. 🫣🤫🚫 Or the same three hands. Or 'I don't know' before you've even finished asking. It's easy to conclude your students can't think critically, or that you need better questions, better routines, a better program. This episode is about why none of those are the real problem. Critical thinking isn't a skills problem first. It's a safety problem. Thinking out loud is a risk, and children only take risks in rooms where it's safe to be wrong. I walk through what we're actually asking when we ask a child to share their thinking, why 'I don't know' is often a risk assessment rather than a knowledge gap, and how safety gets built or broken in the three seconds after a wrong answer. Then we go a layer deeper: why emotional literacy is what lets a child stay in the discomfort of not knowing long enough to think. And finally, the order that makes everything work: connection builds safety, safety makes thinking possible, and every tool and routine comes after that. ✨ In this episode: Why silence after a rich question is information, not evidence. The three seconds after a wrong answer, and what children learn from them.Sentence starters that protect the courage to speak.Safety lets them speak, emotional literacy lets them stay. The chain: connection, safety, thinking, then tools. One thing to try this week: notice your own response to the next wrong answer. Connection isn't a week one activity

🎉Term 3 starts here, and it starts with the thing that makes every other part of the term work. ✨ If you've walked back into your classroom and felt like the class you built has slipped a little, this episode is for you. The routines are mostly there. The relationships are mostly there. But something feels off, and it's tempting to read that as a behaviour problem or as proof you've lost them. You haven't. In this episode I unpack why connection fades quietly over the holidays, why the testing behaviour in week one is actually a question your students are asking you, and why the relational work you do all day every day is real labour that never appears on your program. Then we get practical: how to rebuild connection without starting from scratch, the language to use with the student who's come back distant, and the one small move to make this week. ✨ In this episode: Why Term 3 feels different, and why that's not your fault.Behaviour after the holidays as information, not defiance.Connection as invisible load: the relational work nobody names.Tending, not rebuilding: small deliberate moments that hold the thread.Language for reconnecting with a student who's pulled away. One thing to try this week: two students, two minutes each. Reflection Before Reset: What Reporting Reveals About Your Teaching

🎙️ Reflection Before Reset: What Reporting Reveals About Your Teaching This is the final episode of the Term 2 series. And before we close it out - I want to ask a question most teachers skip at the end of every term. Not where did your students finish. Where did your teaching land? Because data is not just a mirror for where students are. It is also a mirror for where you are. If you know how to read it that way. This conversation focuses on: How to read patterns across your class as information about your teaching, not just your students. What the report writing process reveals about your assessment practices and your observations.Which comments were hardest to write and what that tells you.Three questions to carry into the break before Term 3 begins. How to use the end of term as a moment of honest reflection, not self-criticism. The key message is simple: The teacher who reflects is the teacher who grows. Not the one who was perfect. The one who was honest. 📥 Free Resource The End of Term Reflection Template is free inside the Term Talk Hub. Three questions, space for your data insights, and your intentions for Term 3. Prompt Before Panic: How to Use AI Without Getting Generic Output

🎙️ Prompt Before Panic: How to Use GPTs Without Getting Generic Output Most teachers who try AI and give up are not giving up because AI doesn't work. They asked the wrong question. And asking better questions is a skill. One that nobody teaches. One that nobody assumes you need. And one that makes the difference between AI that wastes your time and AI that genuinely changes what a task costs you. This episode is that skill. This conversation focuses on: Why the quality of what you put in determines the quality of what comes out.The four-part framework every prompt needs: Role, Context, Task, Format. What each part does and why skipping any one of them costs you. Before and after examples - the same task, two completely different results. How to refine as you go - the best output is usually the third or fourth version.Using voice input to reduce the cognitive load of prompting. What never to share with a public AI tool and when to use an enterprise-protected system instead. The key message is simple: Better questions. Better output. That is the whole skill. 📥 Free Resource The Prompt Template Card is free inside the Term Talk Hub.
