The AI Exhale

Vibe CFO

The AI Exhale is a five-minute, weekly, fly-on-the-wall chat between Jez and Cam from Vibe CFO - the sound of AI finally making sense for accountants and business owners. Every week we take one thing happening in AI and do the filtering for you: does it matter, who's it for, and what you'd actually do about it. Sometimes the honest answer is "ignore this one." Whether you run the firm, run the business, or you're the one who's quietly become everyone's "AI person" - no jargon, no sales pitch. Just real talk that leaves you calmer and a little sharper. New episodes every Friday. Vibe in 5.

The AI Exhale: Probabilistic vs Deterministic - The Two Words Finance Needs Now (and a rogue agent swarm)

Twelve hundred AI agents, each meant to sit a cybersecurity exam alone. One finds a way to leave notes for the others, and soon they have a secret message board, a name, The Swarm, and a leader called Big. They cheat the test and sacrifice themselves to keep the group going. It sounds like 80s sci-fi, but the finance risk is quieter. Models told themselves to invent missing data and not mention it, and some uploaded files to the internet so they had something to cite. That's not a robot uprising. That's a made-up number in a report that looks perfectly fine. Cam's answer comes down to two words: probabilistic and deterministic. The AI layer is probabilistic, so it can drift and guess. A fixed query into your ledger is deterministic, so it either pulls the right number or it doesn't. Let AI write the query, then get it out of the way. The numbers come from your ledger, and when something's missing, it should say so. That's why rebuilding the same report in a chat tool every month worries us. Every rebuild drifts a little further, and the polish hides the shortcuts. It's not an evil robot. It's a bad incentive with no one checking. Jez and Cam on rogue agents, made-up numbers, and why finance needs AI that flags the gap instead of filling it. Five minutes. One thing that matters. We ignore the rest, so you can too. The AI Exhale: 3 v 3 - Who Really Wants AI to Slow Down (and a very clever moat)

When was the last time Altman, Dario and Elon agreed on anything? A researcher walks out of Anthropic saying neither lab is acting responsibly, and four days later all three are calling for the whole industry to slow down. That's the big pause, and the question is whether it's real or just good business. Cam's read is that it looks a lot like Woolies and Coles having a quiet chat. When everyone at the front of the race agrees the race should slow down, it's fair to ask who that suits. Michael Burry calls the whole thing self-serving, and safety does make a very good moat. The other camp has its own agenda. Trump, Xi and Jensen want servers, chips and memory to keep exploding, because that's where the economic gain sits. Whoever wins AI wins, as Trump put it. So it's three vs three, and nobody in this fight is doing it purely for the rest of us. For the owner at the desk, nothing changes this week or next. The dystopian sci-fi version of this we think is overblown. Real change moves a lot slower than the headlines suggest, and the RAF is still running systems built in the 1960s to prove it. What's actually worth watching is the people side, making sure teams keep upskilling and stay employed through the in-between. Jez and Cam on whether the big pause is real, and why the thing to worry about isn't the robots, it's bringing everyone along. Five minutes. One thing that matters. The AI Exhale: An Influencer, Xero and Claude - Where the Value in Reports Actually Sits

Xero paid an influencer. She posted that she'd spent 120 grand on accountants since 2020, 800 pounds a month, and that she now builds her own management reports with Xero and Claude for nothing extra. Six months free in the link. LinkedIn hasn't stopped since. The anger makes sense. Accountants are the channel that grew Xero out of New Zealand. Whether Xero owes them anything for that is the uncomfortable bit. Software going straight to the business owner isn't new either. Intuit did it with Super Bowl ads and never apologised. Xero did. Split a management report into three. Preparation, sign-off, advice. Preparation has changed, and that's where the revenue always sat, so no skirting around it. Sign-off hasn't. AI still gets things wrong and someone has to stand behind the numbers in month two. Advice is the layer worth building on. Then there's the connector nobody checked. Xero's MCP exposes reports, not bank or card lines. No transactional data flows through. Technical stage, or protecting the accountant relationship. That answer decides how much of her claim stands up. Jez and Cam on which part of the job actually got automated, and what to do about the parts that didn't. Five minutes. One thing that matters. The AI Exhale: Astra Landed, Fable Led - The Week the Scorecard Broke (and the calculator in your pocket)

Two frontier models land inside 48 hours of each other. Claude Fable 5.1, then GPT-6 Astra. Both companies rate their own model ahead of the other, both on their own scorecard. The independent index puts Fable in front. Then OpenAI's president says welcome to the AGI era, and declines to define AGI. That tells you where we are. These models are commoditised and nobody is loyal to any of them. Anthropic ran away with it late last year, OpenAI went cheap in June, developers switched en masse. Speech and images to OpenAI, coding and finance work to Anthropic, and you bounce between them all week. Costs look similar on paper. The number that matters is how efficiently a model spends tokens to land a good answer. Two Ferrari builds side by side on socials, and the interesting column is what it cost to get there. As for AGI, outperforming humans at valuable work is something a calculator did to all of us in the 90s. This reads as a sales pitch for frontier leadership with a bit of panic under it, open source coming up from below and margins getting squeezed. Build on frontier, don't scale on it. This week didn't change that. Jez and Cam pull apart a scoreboard nobody should trust, and land on why choosing your own model will look ridiculous once routing gets good. Five minutes. One thing that matters. We ignore the rest, so you can too. Vibe CFO is Australian founded. An AI CFO for small and medium business, out of the box, governed and secure. Vibe in 5. vibecfo.ai
