Dave Holmes + A Life Written Outside the Lines

Dave Holmes has spent a lifetime being easy to recognize and nearly impossible to categorize. He is a writer, humorist, host, cultural observer, Editor-at-Large at Esquire - and someone with the rare ability to make you laugh very hard while casually saying something devastatingly true about being human. But this conversation isn't really about the things Dave has done. It's about how he became Dave Holmes. He grew up feeling different before he necessarily had the language for why. He loved music, television, writing and pop culture in a world that gave boys a fairly limited menu of ways to be. He tried being practical. He tried fitting in. He tried becoming the person he thought he was supposed to become. Thankfully, none of it entirely took. And somewhere along the way, he learned something bigger: your life rarely arrives in the form you expected it to. Success doesn't have to mean becoming the person everybody knows. It can mean becoming the person you finally recognize. And often, the choice that makes the least sense on paper is the one that opens up your life. Dave talks about the power of boldness and putting your work  - and yourself - into the world, even when it makes you cringe. About the freedom that comes with no longer trying to fit into somebody else's idea of who you should be. About being gay, being visible, being fully seen and eventually taking control of your own narrative. He talks about writing, reinvention, creativity, masculinity, belonging, success, failure and why there is more than one way to make a life in a creative industry. Most of all, Dave makes a compelling case for doing your thing - whatever that may be. Because if you don't, we - aka the world - don't get to experience it. And when I ask what he would tell the younger Dave - the boy who was looking around wondering where exactly he fit - his answer says almost everything: You will not believe it. Because the life ahead of him would be stranger, funnier, freer and far more interesting than anything he could have planned. This is a conversation about what happens when you stop trying to color inside someone else's lines. And begin writing a life that actually feels like your own. The incomparable Dave Holmes on The Ambition Code. IN THIS EPISODE Why not fitting in can eventually become your greatest advantage The difference between being visible and being fully seen Putting yourself out there before confidence arrives Why boldness can take you places good sense never will Learning to stop editing yourself for other people Coming out, identity and taking control of your own narrative Finding your voice as a writer Why creating something that embarrasses you a little might be a very good sign Redefining success when life doesn't follow the original plan Why there is more than one way to build a creative career The freedom of becoming more completely yourself What Dave would tell the younger version of himself about the life waiting for him CONNECT WITH DAVE HOLMES Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/daveholmes/ Dave at Esquire: https://www.esquire.com/author/9774/dave-holmes/ Cocksure on Substack: https://cocksure.substack.com/ Dave is an Editor-at-Large at Esquire, hosts on SiriusXM's The Spectrum, and hosts the podcast International Waters with Maximum Fun. ONE CONVERSATION, TWO DIFFERNT PATHS - PART TWO | Cary Brothers + The Life He Built by Trusting His Instincts

ONE CONVERSATION, TWO DIFFERENT PATHS - PART TWO Cary Brothers + The Life He Built by Trusting His Instincts At 19 years old, Julie was a college student spending the summer living in the NYU dorms in New York City when a ten-minute conversation with a complete stranger changed the course of her life. That stranger was Cary Brothers. Cary was a college student from Nashville spending the summer interning at MTV. They barely knew each other, but chatted for just a few minutes before he offered to pass Julie's résumé along to the internship coordinator at MTV. That small act of kindness led to a phone call from MTV. The phone call led to an internship. The internship became eight years on staff at MTV - and the foundation for so much of the career, friendships, opportunities, and life Julie would go on to build. But then, Cary disappeared from her story. For years, Julie wondered what had happened to him. Now, decades later, they finally sit down to talk about where his life went after those ten minutes changed hers. In Part Two of One Conversation, Two Different Paths, acclaimed singer-songwriter Cary Brothers shares the extraordinary story of a life built without a roadmap: walking away from paths that looked successful on paper, starting over when something deeper was calling, trusting his instincts, betting on himself, and ultimately finding his way to a career in music that would take him around the world. From MTV and Hollywood to the Hotel Café, to the Grammy-winning Garden State soundtrack, and musical placements all over the television and film landscape - Cary's journey is about far more than music. It's about trusting yourself and taking the risk before you know how it will turn out, pushing through fear and failure, and understanding that success is rarely a straight line. And from there, Cary has consistently opened doors for other people, shared opportunities, connected friends, and helped others find their moment. And along the way, he discovered that the people and relationships you invest in can become part of what carries you through your own highs, lows, reinventions, and next chapters. This is a conversation about what happens when you realize that the life you are succeeding at may not the life you are meant to live. Cary walked away from a career he had already built because music was the one thing he knew he had to pursue. He started again, built an extraordinary musical career on his own terms, and kept choosing instinct over certainty every time his life asked him to begin again. And woven through both Julie and Cary's stories is the reminder that good things can happen when you least expect them. A ten-minute conversation can open a door. A seemingly small decision can redirect a life. The person you help today can become part of the world that carries you tomorrow. Sometimes the moments that shape us most are the ones we never saw coming. Two young people. One ten-minute conversation. Two very life different paths. And decades later, they finally get to finish the conversation. ✨✨✨ CARY'S MUSIC: FOLLOW + LISTEN (you'll be so glad that you did!) ONE CONVERSATION, TWO DIFFERENT PATHS | Part One: The Summer in New York City That Changed My Life

ONE CONVERSATION, TWO DIFFERENT PATHS Part One: The Summer in New York City That Changed My Life How do you get from college into the career - and life - you dream about? And how do you begin again when you are ready to pivot, pursue something new, and ask for exactly what you want? At 19, Julie went to New York City for an internship at Andy Warhol's iconic Interview Magazine. She had no master plan or professional connections. She simply knew she wanted to be part of the extraordinary world of media and entertainment - and she was willing to follow her instincts, raise her hand, and ask for the opportunity. In this personal episode of The Ambition Code, Julie shares the origin story of her career and the lessons that still guide her today: move toward the environments that inspire you, surround yourself with curiosity and momentum, ask clearly for what you want, and do not automatically accept the first "no" as the end of the story. Sometimes the next step is another thoughtful question. Sometimes it is a different route. Sometimes it is simply having the courage to keep moving before you can see the entire path. Then, on Julie's final day in New York, one magical ten-minute conversation with a stranger from her dorm changed the direction of her life. This episode is for anyone trying to break into a dream career, searching for the courage to make a pivot, or wondering how to move closer to the life they know they want. Life has a way of presenting opportunities, connections, and unexpected possibilities when you become clear about the direction you are pursuing - and brave enough to act on it. In this episode: Why asking for what you want can change what becomes possible How to move forward when the first answer is no Why your environment can expand your vision for your life How one conversation can redirect your future You do not need every answer before you begin. Follow the instinct. Take the next step. Ask the question. Your life is waiting for you. The Road to The Real Wolf of Wall Street: Amy Palmer on Risk, Reinvention, and Betting on Herself

The success story is almost never the whole story. Amy Palmer is an Emmy-nominated producer, journalist, host, media executive and entrepreneur whose career has taken her from television production and on-air reporting to building Power Women TV and executive producing the Paramount+ docuseries The Real Wolf of Wall Street. But Amy's path was anything but linear - or easy. Early in Amy's career, she knew that she wanted to become a journalist and host. Pursuing that vision meant walking away from the security of a successful television career, starting over and betting on herself before she had any proof that the bet would pay off. In this honest conversation, Amy opens up about the professional and personal achievements and setbacks behind her success; self-funding Power Women TV for five years; building a media company from her kitchen; and hearing industry executives insist that audiences did not care about content created for women. She also shares how she persuaded early guests including Bethenny Frankel and Arianna Huffington to become part of her vision, why creators can no longer afford to remain silent, and how an unexpected career pivot into gaming forced her to learn, adapt and reinvent herself again. Amy also takes Julie behind the scenes of the relationship and brand-building work that eventually led her to executive produce the Paramount+ docuseries The Real Wolf of Wall Street. This is a conversation about risk, resilience, personal branding, entrepreneurship and what it really means to continue believing in a vision that other people cannot yet see. In this episode: • Walking away from comfort and career security • Why Amy self-funded Power Women TV  • Building a media platform without a traditional network behind her • Landing Bethenny Frankel and Arianna Huffington early in the journey • What entrepreneurship reveals about you • Developing a personal brand without becoming an "influencer" • Reinventing yourself when the original plan changes • The difficult reality of women opening doors for other women • The road to executive producing The Real Wolf of Wall Street Connect with Amy Palmer Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amypalmertv/ ✨ The Ambition Code ✨ Created and Hosted by Julie Kellman Reading Produced by Love + Daydreams Music by @moby.gratis Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-ambition-code/id6790585618 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/033P0xatKPFsBNimqb32rb YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheAmbitionCodePod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/TheAmbitionCodePod Love + Daydreams: https://www.loveanddaydreams.com Your life is waiting for you. She Started as a Cleaning Lady. Then MTV Changed Everything. This is Johanna Salazar's Story.

She Started as a Cleaning Lady. Then MTV Changed Everything. This is Johanna Salazar's Story "I don't need anybody to hire me again - because I hire myself." Johanna Salazar's story begins long before she became a media executive, producer, creative technologist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of Foodstream Network. It begins in Colombia, with a mother whose courage and sacrifice created a path to opportunity in the United States for her two young daughters - and with a family of determined women who survived by working hard, taking risks, and continually reinventing themselves. Johanna came to America at seven years old. As a teenager, she cleaned beautiful homes alongside her mother in the Hamptons, NY. One of those jobs introduced her to a mentor who encouraged her to think bigger, ask herself difficult questions, and imagine a life beyond the one she could already see. Years later, Johanna was standing outside MTV's Times Square offices before an internship interview - and began to cry. She remembers thinking: "I'm the daughter of a cleaning lady. I'm a cleaning lady. People like me don't do this." But in true young Jo fashion - she wiped her tears and walked into the building anyway, taking the first step into the rest of her life. In this deeply personal conversation, Johanna opens up about becoming one of the first women in her family to attend college; the childhood experiences that shaped her fierce devotion to family; the fear and uncertainty she experienced as a young immigrant; and the responsibility she felt to honor the sacrifices made on her behalf. She also shares how she built a career at the highest levels of media and entertainment, left the security of corporate America, reinvented herself as an entrepreneur, and learned to stop waiting for permission. Johanna and Julie discuss: • The difference between ambition and survival • Cleaning houses while working her way through college • The mentor who taught her to think bigger • The internship that changed the trajectory of her life • Helping another young woman who cleaned offices begin her own media career • Why Johanna would rather make mistakes than live with regret • Overcoming the fear of being judged by friends and colleagues • Why failure can be one of life's greatest teachers • Building Foodstream Network after experiencing food insecurity firsthand • Turning personal experience into purpose and community impact • Giving yourself permission to sit at the table - or build your own  This episode is for anyone who has ever believed a room, a career, or an opportunity was meant for someone else -  And then realized that "someone else" could be you. Johanna's story is proof that where you begin does not determine where you belong. You can ask the question. Take the risk. Pull up the chair. And when no one gives you permission, you can give it to yourself - and walk through the door on your own. Listen, follow, and share The Ambition Code. Life After Divorce: Dating, Love, and Finding Yourself Again | With LeAnn Lazar

Divorce comes with an astonishing amount of paperwork - and remarkably little instruction for how to rebuild your life. So how do you move through the emotional chaos, protect what matters, and begin imagining a future you cannot see yet? In this deeply personal episode of The Ambition Code, Julie Kellman Reading is joined by her dear friend LeAnn Lazar, an Executive Life and Relationship Coach, certified NLP practitioner, and creator of the Realigning with Purpose® approach. LeAnn helps people navigate defining life transitions by combining emotional intelligence with practical strategy. She also helped Julie through the end of her own marriage, making this an especially honest conversation about what it takes to move from chaos to clarity. Julie and LeAnn discuss the abrupt identity shift that can accompany divorce, regulating your nervous system before making major decisions, taking ownership of your financial story, rebuilding daily routines, rediscovering yourself, and focusing on what you can manage today. They also talk candidly about dating and intimacy after divorce, including: • Euphoric recall and idealizing the past • Knowing when you are emotionally ready to date • Why the first relationship after divorce can feel so powerful • Loneliness versus genuine relationship readiness • Love bombing, accountability, and inconsistent behavior • Mistaking chemistry for connection • Learning to trust your judgment again • Dating yourself and building independence • Creating emotional and physical safety • Recognizing the values of a healthy relationship • Blending families, finances, and future plans LeAnn also shares her 3-3-3 Reset, a simple grounding practice for moving out of emotional overwhelm: Take three deep breaths. Name three things you are grateful for. Identify three immediate priorities. The most important thing to know is that you will get through it. Even when you cannot see the way forward, there is another side - and there is a life waiting for you there. How to Start Before You Feel Ready, and Build the Life You Want with Abby Girvin

Some people walk into a room. Abby Girvin arrives like sunshine with a business plan. ☀️🔥 She is a force of nature, a professional possibility-maker, and the kind of person who makes you believe you could completely change your life before lunch. In this episode of The Ambition Code, Julie Kellman Reading sits down with Abby, Owner and Agency Director of DDO Artists Agency, for a joyful, hilarious, and wildly motivating conversation about starting before you feel ready, and trusting yourself enough to figure it out along the way. Abby started her first modeling agency at 21. A few years later, she moved to Los Angeles with $500, one connection, and absolutely no interest in waiting for anyone to give her permission to make her mark. Within days, she began working at DDO Artists Agency as an agent. By 27, she owned it. Today, DDO represents more than 2,500 actors across Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Atlanta - and Abby is still leading with the same magic combination of instinct, optimism, courage, and let's-just-make-it-happen energy. Abby opens up about being underestimated as a young woman in the entertainment industry, purchasing a company before she felt fully prepared, and continuing to experience imposter syndrome even after decades of success. She shares how affirmations and visualization helped change the direction of her life, why intuition remains one of her greatest business tools, and how she built a company culture rooted in trust, autonomy, and giving people room to rise. We also talk about taking imperfect action, finding purpose without having every step mapped out, and why some of the most powerful decisions in life begin with one simple realization: If he, she, or they can do it…so can I. In This Episode Refusing to wait for permission to make your mark Being underestimated as a young woman in business Why success does not automatically eliminate imposter syndrome Using affirmations and visualization to create change Trusting intuition as a business and life strategy Growing DDO into a nationally recognized talent agency Building a team through trust, freedom, and autonomy Navigating uncertainty in the entertainment industry Finding purpose without having the entire plan Taking small, imperfect steps that create real momentum Abby Girvin's personal Ambition Code This episode is for anyone who has been waiting to feel more confident, more qualified, more certain, or more prepared before beginning. Abby's story is proof that you do not have to see the entire road. You simply have to take the next step. Come for the career wisdom. Stay for the sunshine. Leave ready to do the thing you have been overthinking for six months. ☀️✨🔥 Thank you, Abby, for such an excellent conversation! Welcome to The Ambition Code | Your Life is Waiting For You

What does ambition look like when the career, life, or future you thought you understood suddenly changes? In the first episode of The Ambition Code, creator and host Julie Kellman Reading shares why she created the podcast - and why ambition is about far more than professional success. Julie explores the question at the heart of the series: How do you get from seeing the life you want to actually building it? She reflects on the open doors that shaped her career, the childhood business that first revealed her entrepreneurial instincts, and the moment decades later when enormous changes in both her personal life and the entertainment industry forced her to reconsider what came next. Drawing on everything she had already learned as an executive producer, storyteller, entrepreneur, and creative leader, Julie began building again - launching Love + Daydreams, creating a line of yoga mats, learning new platforms and technologies, joining The Media Machine podcast, and ultimately creating The Ambition Code. This episode is a powerful reminder that starting over does not mean starting from nothing. Every experience, skill, risk, failure, breakthrough, and version of yourself comes with you into your next chapter. In this episode: • How to move from imagining a future to creating one • Recognizing the opportunities that could change your life and making the choices to go for them. • Rebuilding when your career, industry, or personal life changes • Using everything you already know in a completely new direction • Why ambition is not always a straight climb upward • Beginning again - even decades into your life or career • Finding the courage to run through the next open door The Ambition Code is a premium conversation series about ambition, identity, career, reinvention, leadership, and the defining moments that shape who we become.
