The Antifragility Reframe

Dr. Frank L. Douglas

The Antifragility Reframe Podcast is a space for deep conversations with leaders, thinkers, and practitioners who thrive in uncertainty. While my previous show, The Reframe for Resilience Podcast, focused on how individuals and organizations can recover and “bounce back” from challenges, this new podcast goes further. We explore how adversity, stress, and volatility can actually make us stronger—not just something to withstand, but something to harness. At the heart of this shift is reframing: the ability to see challenges through a new lens. By reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth, we transform the very forces that might break us into catalysts that strengthen us. Key Difference: Resilience vs. Antifragility 1. Resilience - The ability to endure shocks and return to a prior state. Resilient people and systems withstand disruption and recover to baseline. • Mindset - “How can I reinterpret this so I can endure it and get through it?” 2. Antifragility - The ability to grow stronger because of shocks, stressors, and volatility. Antifragile people and systems use disruption as fuel for growth and innovation. • Mindset - “How can I reinterpret this so I can benefit from it and emerge stronger?” Resilience helps us survive. Antifragility helps us evolve. Reframing is the bridge — the mental shift that determines whether we return to where we were, or transform into something stronger. Invitation for Guests As a guest, you’ll have the chance to share your own story of growth through challenge, your insights on navigating volatility, and your strategies for transforming stress into strength. Together, we’ll inspire listeners to embrace uncertainty not with fear, but with curiosity and creativity.

The Antifragility Reframe - Episode 21: Piercing the Design Fog Together with Dianna Deeney

Innovation doesn’t come from working harder. It comes from working through uncertainty — together. In this episode of The Antifragility Reframe, Dr. Frank L. Douglas speaks with Dianna Deeney, author of Pierce the Design Fog, about how teams can transform confusion into clarity and conflict into creativity. If you care about leadership, innovation, or building resilient teams, this conversation is for you. It begins with courageous conversations. In this episode of The Antifragility Reframe, Dr. Frank L. Douglas speaks with quality and reliability engineer and author Dianna Deeney, creator of the book Pierce the Design Fog. Dianna shares her journey from the production floor to the design room — and how she discovered that the real obstacle to innovation is not technical skill, but unaddressed uncertainty. She explains how teams can use structured dialogue, customer-focused thinking, and intentional conflict to move from confusion to clarity. Together, they explore how antifragility is built in the earliest stages of product development — before CAD drawings, before prototypes — when teams learn to challenge assumptions, align on purpose, and innovate together. This conversation goes beyond engineering. It reveals how the same frameworks used to design better products can help us navigate life’s uncertainty with more courage and collaboration. Key Topics From machine operator to quality and reliability engineerWhy uncertainty is fuel for innovationThe danger of unspoken assumptions in designCross-functional collaboration as a source of antifragilityTargeting customer experiences before building solutionsTurning “my idea” into “our idea”Applying product design thinking to life challengesThe power of structured frameworks in early-stage innovation Timeline Summary 00:00 – Welcome and introduction to Dianna Deeney 01:00 – Dianna’s journey from manufacturing floor to design leadership 03:00 – Using quality tools in early design conversations 05:00 – The role of courage and constructive conflict in innovation 07:00 – Human factors and customer-centered design 10:00 – Breaking down customer experiences into actionable design targets 12:30 – Designing products vs. solving life problems 14:00 – Overview of Pierce the Design Fog and practical frameworks Links & Resources Book: Pierce the Design Fog by Dianna DeeneyLearn more about her website at Deeney Enterprises LLCConnect with Dr. Frank L.
