A Spark in Our Lives: New York City Interior Designer Alvin Wayne

A Spark in Our Lives: New York City Interior Designer Alvin Wayne

This episode launches our guest episode series, “A Spark in Our Lives,” which is the catalyst of why we wanted to start The Arner Adventures Podcast. We yearned to chat with people who have not only inspired us, but who have ignited a spark in our lives to motivate us to go after the life that we desire. When we started our list of who we wanted to have as a guest on the podcast, Alvin was on the top of the list, and we were thrilled when he said yes!

Let us tell you about Alvin Wayne:
Alvin Wayne is a NYC based Interior Designer and Visual Curator. We have been inspired by his ability to make any space chic, especially small spaces. Alvin believes everyone deserves to live in luxury no matter the budget. He has a fabulous story of living life to the fullest, shows up every single day on Instagram to not only showcase his design aesthetic through his IG stories, but to incite passion from anyone who follows him. Alvin has been featured in HGTV, Apartment Therapy, and most recently by Architectural Digest in The Iconic Home Black Interior Designers Network, AND his apartment has been featured in Architectural Digest, because, well, it's ahhhmazing!

In this episode we chat about:

Alvin's Instagram stories and how he shows up every single day with morning inspiration. We highly encourage you to follow him and be motivated every day.
The moving reel from Versailles that is a MUST WATCH.  Save it because it's so great!
What inspires Alvin to design, his aesthetic, his dream project, and his passion.
Alvin answers our audience questions surrounding #planttalktuesday, plants and design, necessities in your home, the famous "Kiss Me Karl" neon sign, and he answers our rapid fire questions.
Alvin answers the most important question, "What does a life well lives mean to you?" Spoiler alert- chill bumps!

What Does a Life Well Lived Mean to You?

What Does a Life Well Lived Mean to You?

#4: This is a fun episode, because similar to our first few episodes, you are going to get to know us better, but in a fun way! You are also going to get a sneak peak of a small portion of the guest episodes which are starting next week, yay! We are introducing a segment that we will include on our guest episodes: 10 rapid fire questions, and then ending with a very important question that every guest will be asked, “what does a life well lived mean to you?” This is a really great way to dig deep into getting to know more about someone, and we are super excited about it! So, let’s go!

In this episode we chat about:

The guest episode format- with next week being our first guest episode (eeeek! again, so excited!) we go over what that will look like. By the way, we aren’t just going to do some rapid fire questions and that’s it. We just have this as a segment. We didn’t feel as though we needed to dig into a deep conversation with each other (Ger and Shannon) for you to get to know us, especially if you listened to the first few episodes. If you are really dying to get to know us on a deeper level, go back to episode 1.
What does a life well lived mean to you? Gerry and Shannon both answer the question that all guests will answer. We are looking forward to hearing what our guests say when this question is asked.

Setting Intentions, Rather Than New Year’s Resolutions

Setting Intentions, Rather Than New Year’s Resolutions

#3: In this episode, we are going to walk you through our easy 7 step plan for Setting Intentions for the New Year, Rather than New Year's Resolutions. Wow, this sounds like an info-mercial, but it’s not. It just so happens to be 7 steps, to setting your intentions for the new year. Hopefully, by the end of this, you will find that you are able to find an area or areas you want to focus on, develop a plan for yourself, set intention, and oftentimes, have a word that guides you for the year.

In this episode we chat about:

Why not resolutions? January 17th is "Ditch your New Year’s Resolution Day” because it is the most common date people abandon their New Year’s resolution. There is a reason for that. The most important thing we have learned in the past few years though, is to not put too much pressure on ourselves. We walk through the 7 steps so that you can move into 2022 with a fresh outlook, filled with positivity. If you find yourself getting away from your goal, start again. That is the beautiful thing about this. No pressure.

We hope these steps are helpful for you as you set your intentions for the new year. With the right mindset, possibilities are awaiting to unfold.

Could You Commit to a No-Buy Year? We Did, and Here is How It Went!

Could You Commit to a No-Buy Year? We Did, and Here is How It Went!

#2: So, we have a question for you…. Would you be able to commit to a no-buy year? Well, in this episode, we are going to tell you how we did it, in 2021. We committed to a year of no-buy. We are going to tell you how we did it, give you the low down on why we decided to do it, how we did after a year on the no-buy year lifestyle, what we learned from it, and if we would do it again.

In this episode we chat about:

Why did we commit to a no-buy year? As minimalists, sure, this isn’t unchartered territory, but as humans, we often find ourselves falling back into old routines, of buying things without thought, adding clutter to our home, and forgetting about what is important in life. Spoiler alert- it’s not all of the stuff we have.
What were our guidelines? Approved spending, and our restrictions. We set those prior to embarking upon the no-buy year.
How do we think we did? We did a monthly check-in at the end of every month on YouTube, so that held us accountable. We walk through our challenges and successes.
Would we do it again? That is the question we are have been asked a lot lately, and we address it.

Why We Sold Everything and Moved to the Coast

Why We Sold Everything and Moved to the Coast

#1: Want to know how it all began for us? This whole Arner Adventures journey? Well, sit back for a few minutes and let us tell you a story about how our minimalist lifestyle began, and hopefully inspire you to life a life without the physical baggage, get a better handle of the emotional baggage, and curate a lifestyle that gets you excited to wake up each day!

In this episode we chat about:

The biggest question we get- how exactly did we get to where we wanted to sell everything, pick up, and move to the coast, living a minimalist life?
Huge success of our business, yet no quality of life. We were not enjoying the fruits of our labor.
Poor health- physical and mental health began taking a toll.
Burnout, loss of loved ones (human and pets)
We were filling our home with stuff in order to fill a void.
Mental breakdown, depression. Something had to give.
Survival plan- sell our home, stuff, biz, downsized, go to the ocean to heal.
People thought we were crazy! We started the Arner Adventures blog to document our journey in our tiny home, and our minimalist lifestyle.
Our blog has transitioned into how we live life minimally, but fully. The entire experience helped us focus more on living with more intention.
Decided to start “The Arner Adventures Podcast” as a way to not only share our own experience, but to bring on guests who have been a spark in our lives along the way- people who, too, have opted for a life that doesn’t fit into conventional structures.
