One year ago, Sable received an unexpected email that changed everything. Within moments, a successful career she loved was suddenly filled with uncertainty, administrative leave, and the possibility that life as she knew it was coming to an end. Ep 10: The $100K Relocation Mistake Black Women Over 40 Make

What if the biggest mistake you make when moving abroad isn't choosing the wrong country, but moving before you're financially and strategically ready? In this episode of The Bougie Expat Podcast, Sable breaks down what she calls the "$100,000 Relocation Mistake" that many smart, successful women make when pursuing life abroad. It's not a mistake caused by a lack of intelligence or ambition. It's a mistake driven by overwhelm, burnout, frustration, or the fear of missing out. Too often, women make emotional relocation decisions before building the financial foundation, income strategy, and lifestyle plan needed to sustain their new life overseas. Sable explains how relocating without a clear plan can lead to costly mistakes, from choosing the wrong country and visa to draining retirement accounts and living off savings that were meant for the future. She also shares practical strategies for avoiding financial pitfalls, building a strategic exit plan, rebuilding income streams before relocating, and designing an international lifestyle that aligns with your personal goals, values, and long-term vision. This episode is for Black women over 40 who are considering moving abroad, retiring overseas, or creating a strategic plan to build a financially secure and fulfilling life abroad. In This Episode Why smart and successful women make the "$100,000 relocation mistake"How burnout, frustration, and FOMO lead to emotional relocation decisions The many reasons women choose to move abroadWhy relocating before rebuilding your income can become a financial disasterThe hidden costs that make relocation far more expensive than expectedWhy choosing the wrong country can cost thousands of dollarsHow selecting the wrong visa creates long-term financial problemsWhy shipping the wrong belongings wastes moneyThe dangers of relying on retirement savings too earlyQuestions you must answer before choosing a countryHow your desired lifestyle should determine your relocation destinationWhy travel preferences and accessibility matter more than you thinkHow to determine exactly how much money you'll need abroadThe importance of creating an income strategy before relocatingReal examples of people who moved impulsively and paid the priceThe tax implications many expats fail to considerHow to build a strategic exit timeline before moving abroadWhy businesses should generate income before you relocateWhy relocation should be your third step, not your firstHow to avoid becoming lost after arriving in your new countryThank you for listening to The Bougie Expat Podcast. Ep 9: My 3 Income Streams Abroad at 62 No 9–5 Needed

You’re ready to make a big move abroad. You’ve imagined the lifestyle, the freedom, and the financial flexibility that comes with it. But there is one question that quietly stops many people in their tracks: how exactly are you going to afford it? In this episode of The Bougie Expat Podcast, Sable breaks down the real financial foundation behind relocating abroad and why most people underestimate what they already have working in their favor. While many assume that moving overseas requires massive wealth or a dramatic leap into uncertainty, Sable shares how she structured her life long before her move. From living in an expensive area while still saving aggressively, to intentionally living on half her salary, she explains how discipline, planning, and multiple income streams created the freedom to relocate with confidence. She also reveals the income sources many people forget they already have, including pensions, retirement accounts, social security eligibility, rental income, and long-term investments. This episode challenges the belief that you need to start from scratch financially before moving abroad. Beyond traditional income, Sable also explores how assets like real estate, savings strategies, and alternative investing approaches can continue generating income even after you relocate. She introduces ideas like hard money lending and self-directed retirement investing as examples of how money can keep working while you live overseas. This episode is for Black women over 40 who are planning retirement abroad, considering relocation, or trying to understand whether they truly have enough financial security to take the leap. Ep 8: I Took Everything… Then Nothing: What 3 Moves Abroad Taught Me

You’re ready to move abroad. Your bags are packed, your passport is in hand, and you’re dreaming about your new life overseas. But what if your relocation plans get complicated by something most people don’t prepare for: everything you own and whether it should actually come with you? In this episode of The Bougie Expat Podcast, Sable breaks down one of the most overlooked realities of international relocation: deciding what to ship, what to sell, what to donate, and what to leave behind when moving abroad. While most relocation conversations focus on visas, housing, and savings, few people talk about the emotional and practical reality of moving an entire household across borders. Sable shares her personal experience shipping full containers, pallets, and pod shipments across multiple countries, and explains why the “just buy everything when you get there” advice is not always realistic. She also walks through how to evaluate your belongings with clarity, how to avoid paying for unnecessary shipping costs, and how to prepare for customs, duties, and unexpected port delays. From furniture and appliances to sentimental items and personal care essentials, she explains what is worth shipping and what is better left behind. This episode is for Black women over 40 who are planning an international move, downsizing for relocation, or creating a strategy for moving abroad with intention, ease, and financial wisdom. You're ready to move abroad. Your bags are packed, your passport is in hand, and you're dreaming about your new life overseas. But what if your relocation plans come to a sudden stop because of debt you thought you could deal with later? In this episode of The Bougie Expat Podcast, Sable discusses one of the most overlooked financial realities of international relocation: the debts that can prevent you from leaving the United States or even cause your passport to be denied or revoked. While many relocation conversations focus on the cost of living, housing, visas, and savings, few people talk about outstanding financial obligations that can quietly derail your plans. Sable explains how unresolved IRS debt, unpaid child support, and unpaid government repatriation loans can affect your ability to travel internationally. She also shares practical steps to help you identify potential issues before they become last minute surprises, why financial and legal wellness are essential parts of relocation planning, and how addressing these obligations early can help you move abroad with greater confidence and peace of mind. This episode is for Black women over 40 who are planning an international move, preparing for retirement overseas, or creating a relocation strategy that includes financial freedom, legal readiness, and long term peace of mind. If you are a U.S. citizen living abroad, planning to move overseas, or thinking about retirement outside the United States, taxes still need to be part of your relocation plan. In this episode of The Bougie Expat Podcast, Sable sits down with her friend Laura, an expat tax CPA with more than 20 years of experience in international taxes, for a clear conversation about what U.S. citizens need to understand before moving abroad.
