    Vitamin C: Supplements 101

    Vitamin C: Supplements 101

Vitamin C: so simple, so necessary... but what is it used for exactly? And what does deficiency look like? Is vitamin C deficiency linked to cancer incidence? Recurrence? Are there times when it should not be taken? Tina & Leah answer all of these questions and more!
Vitamin C is vital to the production of collagen, immune cells, and energy from fats in our diet, to name just a few of its actions. Sometimes called ascorbic acid or ascorbate, vitamin C is a nutrient that you can get from various fruits and veggies. In this episode, we talk about scurvy, high school science experiments, and how vitamin C is both an antioxidant and the opposite of this, a pro-oxidant. We also cover the role of vitamin C before, during, and after cancer diagnosis.

So, can you take vitamin C if you are getting chemotherapy or radiation? Tina & Leah tackle the topic head-on with a discussion of when this nutrient is proven to be detrimental, when it is safe and when some caution is needed (i.e., "talk to your doctor!").

    Collagen: Supplements 101

    Collagen: Supplements 101

What exactly is collagen? Does it really support skin and joints?  And, most pressing: IS IT SAFE to take (in general? if you've had cancer?)  Tina and Leah answer all of this and more as they discuss one of the most popular functional foods available today.

Did you know there are at least 28 different types of collagen in the human body?  It is by far the most abundant protein in humans, accounting for about 30% of the total protein content in the body.

Collagen is a "scaffolding" protein because it has an integral role in the structure of organs and tissues.  But, in cancer care, this gets tricky. Tumors also have collagen as part of their make-up.  So, is the collagen within tumors friend or foe?  Should you be supporting its production or not?

Listen in as Tina and Leah use the latest findings to discuss the risks and benefits of collagen from foods and supplements.

    Vitamin D: Supplements 101

    Vitamin D: Supplements 101

Vitamin D may be the most pivotal nutrient in all of cancer care.  Tina and Leah talk about this hormone masquerading as a “vitamin.”  How much is ideal? Do you need to take it? Can you get what you need from the sun? Is it even safe to take?

There is a tremendous amount of information on vitamin D and cancer, so there is a lot to sift through to figure out what is well-founded and what is hype. Tina and Leah discuss the data, their experiences with patients, and how you can optimize your levels. They also discuss some safety concerns since this is one of the few vitamins that can lead to fatality if consumed in toxic amounts.

As always, you will be entertained and educated. May you derive enough valuable information to feel compelled to share this and help others. Sharing is caring. :)

An amazing resource!

I can’t believe I get to listen to this without paying a copay! Tina and Leah are so smart, funny, and have a perspective that’s sorely missing in most healthcare providers. As a cancer person, it’s the first podcast I recommend to new cancer friends.
