    Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Down In A Hole With Alice In Chains MTV Unplugged

    Alice in Chains is one of the biggest bands from the 90s. But by 1996, they were ghosts.  Over two and a half years had passed since their last real concert. Layne Staley’s heroin addiction had derailed the band’s touring schedule. Yeah, they dropped their self-titled album in 1996 and it went to number one, but they couldn’t go on the road behind it.  The band was out of the spotlight and the rumors about Layne’s addiction were deafening.  MTV had chased them Unplugged for years and, in 1996, the finally said yes.  The rehearsals were rough – guys not showing up and old habits refusing to die – but Layne got himself together long enough to step on that stage – with a little dose of H to round off the edges.  On April 10th, they delivered what many – and I – call one of the greatest MTV Unplugged performances ever.  The stage was dark, intimate—candles flickering, lava lamps barely moving. Layne showed up in his trademark wraparound glasses looking thinner than normal.  It wasn’t perfect… and that’s exactly why it was perfect.  A false start here, a wavering note there, Layne visibly frail but fighting through it. That raw vulnerability made it electric.They reached across their whole career—from early tracks to the new album—with acoustic versions that sometimes enhanced the songs, like the gorgeous ‘No Excuses,’ and other times exposed just how dark and brutal the lyrics really were, like ‘Sludge Factory.’ When Layne’s voice cut through ‘Nutshell’ or ‘Down in a Hole,’ you felt every word. It was haunting, beautiful, and heartbreaking… one of Layne’s final stands with the band.     Ugly American Werewolf in London: John Timmons of Ear-X-Tacy

    Everyone has their own personal favorite. The one place in town that had all the cool records. The place you didn't know existed until a friend took you there and you discover music beyond the mainstream. The place where you feel in the know ready to explore everything around you. That place is your local independent record shop. You got your first LP there or you found it in college and go comb the racks every other weekend. Louisville's Ear-X-Tacy was that for residents and passers-through - the place in the 80s and 90s where you could get the cool imports and the college chart heroes like R.E.M. and The Smiths. Not that you couldn't get mainstream or classic albums there, it was just a vibe that made it the cultural center for like-minded rock fans through various locations in the Louisville Highlands. Ear-X-Tacy was the brainchild of John Timmons, a college student who worked in record stores and decided he'd take his record collection and a $500 cash advance on his MasterCharge to chase his rock n roll dreams. He grew Ear-X-Tacy into the hip capital in town where you could search 10,000 square feet of rock, soul, punk, metal, alternative, local, popular and rare racks for hours. The Foo Fighters, Tenacious D and John Mayer would all perform there on their way to bigger gigs and several generations remember Ear-X-Tacy as a special place in their lives. Like so many other record stores, Ear-X-Tacy is gone. However, John keeps the legacy alive with his weekly radio show (cleverly titled Ear-X-Tacy) where he plays the songs that he loved and inspired him to build the store. John also talks about his many community ventures like The Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS), The Louisville Independent Business Alliance, The Association for Independent Music and Keep Louisville Weird. We share stories from the shop over the years, relive some of the biggest moments and thank John for all that he's done for music and for Louisville.     ABOUT ADRIAN VANDENBERG: One of the finest six-stringers on the planet, Adrian Vandenberg is arguably also one of the most underrated. The Dutch rock guitarist, best known for his tenure as one of the guitarists in Whitesnake during their successful late 1980s period and the band Vandenberg which he started in 1981. In 2013, Adrian formed a new band, Vandenberg's MoonKings, and recorded a new studio album which was released in early 2014.     The Commitments

    In the early 90s, things were radically changing for music. After a decade where music in the mainstream was often beholden to production excess, gated drums, and where there was ofte more polish on a recording than on a hospital floor, underground bands (for a time) brought things back to basics in the wider arena. Guitar riffs, hooks, and volume became the norm again (for a time). So, how did a film about a group of Dublin youths playing tough 1960s soul – as well as its soundtrack – become one of the biggest phenomenons around in 1991, the same year as Nevermind? Welcome to episode 137 of See Hear....sort of. In early July, Kerry and I recorded an episode of Reel Britannia with our dear friends Scott and Tom (of the Banned Biographies podcast). I knew Scott was recording an episode dedicated to Alan Parker's 1991 film The Commitments, and I pushed Kerry and my way onto the episode.....this is one of my favourite films ever, and knew we had to be part of the conversation. Scott has very graciously allowed me to put this episode on the See Hear feed as well. We will be welcoming the RB crew for an episode of See Hear in September, so it's a cross pollination thing going, you see. At the time of recording, it was a mere few weeks before the tragic death of Glen Hansard who was part of the Commitments ensemble. Because of its recording date, there is obviously no mention or tribute to this great musician (and from all accounts, a wonderful human being). We now dedicate this episode to his memory. We have a wonderful conversation about the power of music to bring people together, and the power of ego to tear the apart. Despite the film having a string element of social realism, this is no dire tale of the hardship of existence. Jimmy Rabbitte is a young music fan (played by Robert Arkins, not Argyle as I stupidly say in the podcast) who puts together a soul band – the music of the working class in his estimation – to bring joy to Dublin. What follows is an exercise in what happens when he brings 11 people together to play some of the most joyous and heartbreaking popular music of the 20th century. They form a microcosm of society who can achieve greatness and tear at each other. These youth learn to have aspirations greater than the hand that their hard lives have dealt them. Sounds serious, right? Nup – it's as funny as all get out, while still making some serious points about how people can love and hate each other all at once. Oh...did I say, it has the most brilliant (if jukebox) soundtrack? Kerry and I had an amazing time with Scott and Tom, and hope you enjoy.
