104 - Spring Reset: Declutter Your Home and Start Fresh This Season

In this episode, we’re exploring the energy of spring - a season that naturally invites us to begin again. Every January, we’re encouraged to set resolutions and start fresh. But for many of us, those intentions fade quickly. Winter can be a season of low energy, rest, and reflection… not necessarily the best time to push ourselves into big changes. Spring is different. As the days grow longer and the light returns, our energy begins to rise again. We feel the urge to open the windows, clear the clutter, and create space for something new. In many ways, spring can feel like a more natural new year. It is a season of renewal, possibility, and fresh beginnings. In this episode, we’re talking about how to embrace the energetic new year of spring, and why releasing what no longer belongs in our homes and lives can help us make room for what truly matters. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Set New Year’s goals that didn’t quite stickFelt the urge to declutter or spring clean as the seasons changeWanted to reset your home, habits, or routines after a long winterNeeded a gentle reminder that it’s never too late to begin again We’ll explore: Why spring often feels like the real energetic new yearHow the rising energy of the season can support new intentionsThe power of release and reset before adding new goals or commitmentsClearing mental, emotional, and physical clutter in your life and homeThe concept of Swedish Death Cleaning, and how simplifying our belongings can become an act of care for ourselves and others Whether you’re feeling inspired to declutter your home, revisit goals that faded earlier in the year, or simply welcome the fresh energy of the season, this episode offers a gentle invitation to pause, release, and begin again. Spring reminds us that renewal is always possible. So let’s open the windows, clear a little space, welcome the rising energy of the season, and make room for what we truly want to grow in the year ahead. In this episode of Modern Homemaking, we’re talking about something that sits at the very heart of what it means to create a home that truly supports you. Most wellness conversations focus on things like diet, exercise, supplements, and self-care routines. But one of the biggest influences on our wellbeing is something we rarely talk about in wellness spaces: Our homes. The spaces we wake up in each morning. The routines we move through every day. The emotional atmosphere within our walls. In this episode, we explore the eight dimensions of wellness and how each one shows up within our homes and the work of homemaking. Because homemaking isn’t just about keeping up with chores or decorating beautifully. It’s about creating an environment that supports the wellbeing of the people who live there, including you. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt overwhelmed by everything it takes to run a homeWondered why your home sometimes feels draining instead of supportiveWanted your home to feel calmer, healthier, and more aligned with your lifeBelieved that homemaking could be more meaningful than simply managing tasks In this episode, we explore: Why your home environment has a powerful influence on your wellbeingThe eight dimensions of wellness and how they show up in everyday life at homeHow routines, spaces, and rhythms quietly shape your mental and emotional healthThe connection between homemaking and supporting the wellbeing of your familyWhy creating a healthier home doesn’t require perfection, just intention When we begin to see our homes through the lens of wellbeing, something shifts. Home stops feeling like a long list of responsibilities… and starts becoming a place that supports your health, your relationships, and your sense of peace. Because the environment you live in every day quietly shapes the way life feels inside it. So whether you’re decluttering a room, adjusting your routines, or simply becoming more aware of the atmosphere in your home, this episode will encourage you to see homemaking in a whole new light. 102 - Are You Happy at Home? The Psychology of Creating a Happier Home

Are you happy at home? It’s a simple question… but many of us don’t slow down enough to really ask it. When we do, we often start thinking about our physical home, whether it’s clean, how it looks, or whether we feel proud of it. But happiness at home isn’t just about the state of our space. It’s also about how we are living within it. In this episode of Modern Homemaking, we’re exploring the deeper connection between home, happiness, and wellbeing. Drawing on ideas from psychology, environmental influence, and holistic homemaking, we’ll talk about how our homes shape how we think, feel, and move through our daily lives. Because creating a happier home isn’t just about doing more. It’s about alignment. When your mindset, environment, routines, and energy begin working together, home can become one of the most supportive and nourishing places in your life. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: • Felt overwhelmed by your home and wondered why it affects you so deeply • Questioned whether your home is supporting your wellbeing or draining it • Wanted your home to feel calmer, lighter, or more aligned with your life • Suspected that happiness at home is about more than cleaning, organizing, or decorating We’ll explore: • Why the question “Are you happy at home?” matters more than we might think • What psychology teaches us about happiness and wellbeing • How our home environment influences our mood, stress, and energy • Why happiness at home often has less to do with your home, and more to do with how you’re living in it • Small shifts you can make to help your home feel more supportive and aligned Whether you’re navigating overwhelm at home, craving more peace in your space, or simply wanting to feel better in your everyday life, this episode is here to remind you that creating a happier home doesn’t require perfection. Sometimes it starts with simply asking the right question. Are you happy at home? And if the answer isn’t quite yet… small shifts can begin to change how life feels, one step at a time. 101 - Welcome to Modern Homemaking: What It Means and Why I’m Reclaiming Homemaker

In this episode, we’re opening a brand new chapter. After years of avoiding the word homemaking, I’m finally claiming it, and renaming this show Modern Homemaking. This isn’t just a new title. It’s a shift in clarity, courage, and calling. For a long time, I resisted using the words homemaking and homemaker in my messaging. I worried about stereotypes, misunderstandings, and being reduced to something smaller than the work I actually do. But over time, I realized something important: the very word I was avoiding was the one my audience was searching for. Today, I’m sharing why I changed the name of the podcast, what modern homemaking truly means, and why I believe homemaking matters now more than ever. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt conflicted about the title “homemaker”Wanted to care deeply about home without being boxed into outdated rolesStruggled with how homemaking is perceived in modern cultureFelt called to create a healthier, happier home, but wanted a more thoughtful approach We’ll explore: Why I avoided the word homemaking for so longThe uncomfortable realization that people couldn’t find my workThe story of my old baking pans, and what they taught me about growth and letting goWhat modern homemaking really means in today’s worldHow the Holistic Home Method supports mindset, routines, decluttering, design, and cyclical living Modern homemaking is not about shrinking yourself. It’s not about perfection or silent sacrifice. It’s about leadership inside your home. It’s about understanding how your space shapes your mental health, your relationships, and your daily life. In a world that feels loud and divided, tending to home with intention is powerful, and more important than ever.. Whether you’ve been here since the beginning or you found this podcast by searching for modern homemaking, I’m so glad you’re here. Together, let’s build happier and healthier homes. Today marks a milestone. Celebrating 100 episodes of The Common Nest Podcast. When I pressed record on episode one two years ago, I had no idea what this show would become. I didn’t know who would listen. I didn’t know if I would keep going. I didn’t know how these conversations would shape me. But here we are… 100 conversations about home. Not just cleaning and decluttering and decorating… But mindset. Invisible labor. Mental load. Cultural pressure. Marriage and motherhood. Rest and leadership. Grief, faith, politics and the seasons of life. In this episode, I’m reflecting on what 100 conversations about homemaking have taught me and sharing the ten lessons I’ve learned. I’m also sharing what I deeply wish every homemaker understood about home, their role, and the weight their carrying. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt behind in your home Wondered why homemaking feels heavier than it “should” Struggled with clutter that feels deeper than just stuff Felt exhausted and questioned your capacity Carried invisible labor that no one else seems to notice Wanted to create a peaceful home without burning yourself out Needed reassurance that you’re not failing We’ll explore: Why home truly starts within The difference between incompetence and overload Why clutter is often emotional, not just physical The real purpose of routines (hint: it’s not productivity) Why design and beauty are not superficial How exhaustion distorts everything at home Homemaking as leadership, not servitude or submission The hidden cultural forces shaping your expectations Why you cannot pour from an empty cup Why alignment, and not perfection,  is the true goal Why you are not behind Why home was never meant to be managed alone Why your worth is not measured by productivity Why tending to yourself is part of tending your home Why your current season matters more than you think Whether you’ve been here since episode one or you’re just finding the show  now, this episode is both a celebration and a closing of a chapter. FEB 13

099 - The Only Thing More Powerful Than Hate Is Love: How to Love in Heavy Times

In this episode, we’re talking about love, but  not the soft, sentimental kind that fills store windows in February. We are talking about the kind of love that holds up when the world feels heavy. Because if you’re honest, the world right now feels heavy, divided, activating and loud. There is injustice playing out publicly. There is anger in the air. There are communities, particularly people of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ community, who are feeling the weight of hatred in very real ways. And maybe you’ve felt it in your body too. The grief.  The outrage.  The exhaustion. So what do we do with all of it? After hearing the phrase, “The only thing more powerful than hate is love,” I found myself sitting with that question. What does powerful love actually look like in practice? And how do we live it out without becoming burned out or bitter? In this episode, I share a grounded framework for building rooted love,  the kind that sustains you instead of draining you, and the specific order it has to move in to truly be strong. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt overwhelmed by the state of the world and unsure how to respond Experienced grief, anger, or activation that’s affecting your home life Wanted to raise children who value dignity, justice, and compassion Struggled with resentment, burnout, or emotional overload Wondered how to stay grounded without becoming disengaged We’ll explore: Why love must be rooted before it can be powerful What it means to receive love before trying to give it How tending to your nervous system strengthens your impact The connection between a regulated home and a more just world What “out-of-order love” looks like, and why it leads to burnout How to build a loving home in heavy times without shrinking your world This conversation is not about ignoring injustice.  It’s not about bypassing anger.  And it’s not about retreating from the world. It’s about building something stronger than hate, starting within you, strengthening your home, and then moving outward with courage and steadiness. If you’ve been carrying heaviness lately, this episode is here to help you move through it with clarity, compassion, and strength. Let’s talk about how to build love that lasts. 7. 098 - Make Home Great Again? Creating a Home with a Different Kind of Greatness

    FEB 7

098 - Make Home Great Again? Creating a Home with a Different Kind of Greatness

In this episode, we continue the conversation,  but this time, we move forward. After naming the cultural, political, and theological stories shaping our homes in Part 1, this episode asks the next, unavoidable question:  If going backward isn’t the answer… then what is? This episode is an exploration of greatness, not as nostalgia, performance, or control, but as something living, responsive, and deeply human. It looks at why the pull of “again” is so strong in heavy times, and why homes don’t actually become stronger by recreating the past. Instead, we begin to imagine a different kind of greatness,  one rooted in care, shared power, adaptability, and wellbeing. This isn’t about doing more, fixing everything, or getting it “right.” It’s about choosing a way forward that actually supports the people who live in our homes now. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt the pull of nostalgia and wondered why it’s so powerful Questioned whether “traditional” solutions actually serve real families Wanted to move forward without rejecting home, family, or faith Felt tired of rigid roles, hidden conflict, or silent sacrifice Longed for a definition of home that feels supportive instead of constricting In this episode, we’ll explore: Why the idea of “again” feels comforting, and what it often leaves out How nostalgia can become a coping mechanism in times of overwhelm Why going backward preserves hierarchy rather than creating safety What it really means to redefine greatness at home How holistic homemaking offers a forward-focused, life-giving path Why the work of home quietly shapes communities, culture, and the future This episode is an invitation, not to return to an idealized past, but to consciously create something better. Because we don’t make anything  great again by going backward. We make home great by choosing a different kind of greatness,  one that meets us right where we are. JAN 31

097 - When Politics Come Home: MAGA, Christian Nationalism, Trad Wives & the Stories That Shape Homes

In this episode, we’re opening a tender and necessary conversation about what’s happening in the world,  and how it quietly finds its way into our homes. What began as personal reflection turned into a deeper reckoning with the cultural, political, and theological stories shaping modern family life. From MAGA to Christian nationalism to the trad wife movement, this episode explores how these narratives don’t just live online or in headlines. They show up in our marriages, parenting, faith spaces, and everyday expectations of home. This isn’t a political rant. It’s a conversation about home,  because home is where these stories are lived, embodied, and passed on. Through personal story, observation, and lived experience, we’ll look at how power, nostalgia, and faith can quietly reshape domestic life, and why it matters that we pay attention. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt unsettled by what’s happening in the world, but unsure how it connects to home Noticed subtle shifts in conversations around marriage, motherhood, or faith Felt tension between your values and the cultural or religious messages around you Wondered why “going back” is being framed as the solution and felt unsure about that Wanted language for what you’re sensing, but haven’t known how to name it In this episode, we’ll explore: How political and cultural movements shape family life from the inside out What MAGA, Christian nationalism, and trad wife ideology have in common Why these stories resonate during times of fear, burnout, and instability How faith language can be used to justify hierarchy and control,  often quietly Why the home is where these ideas do their deepest, most lasting work This is Part 1 of a two-part series. In this first episode, we focus on naming what’s happening and why it matters. In Part 2, we’ll move forward into what actually makes a home strong, supportive, and life-giving in the world we’re living in now. If you’ve been carrying questions, discomfort, or quiet concern about the intersection of politics, faith, and home,  you’re not alone. This conversation is an invitation to slow down, notice the stories shaping us, and begin asking what kind of homes (and future)  we truly want to create.
