099 - The Only Thing More Powerful Than Hate Is Love: How to Love in Heavy Times

In this episode, we’re talking about love, but  not the soft, sentimental kind that fills store windows in February. We are talking about the kind of love that holds up when the world feels heavy. Because if you’re honest, the world right now feels heavy, divided, activating and loud. There is injustice playing out publicly. There is anger in the air. There are communities, particularly people of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ community, who are feeling the weight of hatred in very real ways. And maybe you’ve felt it in your body too. The grief.  The outrage.  The exhaustion. So what do we do with all of it? After hearing the phrase, “The only thing more powerful than hate is love,” I found myself sitting with that question. What does powerful love actually look like in practice? And how do we live it out without becoming burned out or bitter? In this episode, I share a grounded framework for building rooted love,  the kind that sustains you instead of draining you, and the specific order it has to move in to truly be strong. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt overwhelmed by the state of the world and unsure how to respond Experienced grief, anger, or activation that’s affecting your home life Wanted to raise children who value dignity, justice, and compassion Struggled with resentment, burnout, or emotional overload Wondered how to stay grounded without becoming disengaged We’ll explore: Why love must be rooted before it can be powerful What it means to receive love before trying to give it How tending to your nervous system strengthens your impact The connection between a regulated home and a more just world What “out-of-order love” looks like, and why it leads to burnout How to build a loving home in heavy times without shrinking your world This conversation is not about ignoring injustice.  It’s not about bypassing anger.  And it’s not about retreating from the world. It’s about building something stronger than hate, starting within you, strengthening your home, and then moving outward with courage and steadiness. If you’ve been carrying heaviness lately, this episode is here to help you move through it with clarity, compassion, and strength. Let’s talk about how to build love that lasts. 098 - Make Home Great Again? Creating a Home with a Different Kind of Greatness

In this episode, we continue the conversation,  but this time, we move forward. After naming the cultural, political, and theological stories shaping our homes in Part 1, this episode asks the next, unavoidable question:  If going backward isn’t the answer… then what is? This episode is an exploration of greatness, not as nostalgia, performance, or control, but as something living, responsive, and deeply human. It looks at why the pull of “again” is so strong in heavy times, and why homes don’t actually become stronger by recreating the past. Instead, we begin to imagine a different kind of greatness,  one rooted in care, shared power, adaptability, and wellbeing. This isn’t about doing more, fixing everything, or getting it “right.” It’s about choosing a way forward that actually supports the people who live in our homes now. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt the pull of nostalgia and wondered why it’s so powerful Questioned whether “traditional” solutions actually serve real families Wanted to move forward without rejecting home, family, or faith Felt tired of rigid roles, hidden conflict, or silent sacrifice Longed for a definition of home that feels supportive instead of constricting In this episode, we’ll explore: Why the idea of “again” feels comforting, and what it often leaves out How nostalgia can become a coping mechanism in times of overwhelm Why going backward preserves hierarchy rather than creating safety What it really means to redefine greatness at home How holistic homemaking offers a forward-focused, life-giving path Why the work of home quietly shapes communities, culture, and the future This episode is an invitation, not to return to an idealized past, but to consciously create something better. Because we don’t make anything  great again by going backward. We make home great by choosing a different kind of greatness,  one that meets us right where we are. 097 - When Politics Come Home: MAGA, Christian Nationalism, Trad Wives & the Stories That Shape Homes

In this episode, we’re opening a tender and necessary conversation about what’s happening in the world,  and how it quietly finds its way into our homes. What began as personal reflection turned into a deeper reckoning with the cultural, political, and theological stories shaping modern family life. From MAGA to Christian nationalism to the trad wife movement, this episode explores how these narratives don’t just live online or in headlines. They show up in our marriages, parenting, faith spaces, and everyday expectations of home. This isn’t a political rant. It’s a conversation about home,  because home is where these stories are lived, embodied, and passed on. Through personal story, observation, and lived experience, we’ll look at how power, nostalgia, and faith can quietly reshape domestic life, and why it matters that we pay attention. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt unsettled by what’s happening in the world, but unsure how it connects to home Noticed subtle shifts in conversations around marriage, motherhood, or faith Felt tension between your values and the cultural or religious messages around you Wondered why “going back” is being framed as the solution and felt unsure about that Wanted language for what you’re sensing, but haven’t known how to name it In this episode, we’ll explore: How political and cultural movements shape family life from the inside out What MAGA, Christian nationalism, and trad wife ideology have in common Why these stories resonate during times of fear, burnout, and instability How faith language can be used to justify hierarchy and control,  often quietly Why the home is where these ideas do their deepest, most lasting work This is Part 1 of a two-part series. In this first episode, we focus on naming what’s happening and why it matters. In Part 2, we’ll move forward into what actually makes a home strong, supportive, and life-giving in the world we’re living in now. If you’ve been carrying questions, discomfort, or quiet concern about the intersection of politics, faith, and home,  you’re not alone. This conversation is an invitation to slow down, notice the stories shaping us, and begin asking what kind of homes (and future)  we truly want to create. 096 - When You Feel Behind at Home: Time, Productivity, and Modern Homemaking

In this episode, we’re talking about one of the most common (and heavy)  feelings many of us  carry at home: the feeling of being behind. Behind on routines. Behind on projects. Behind on the life or home you thought you’d have by now. We’re unpacking why that feeling is so persistent, why it’s often rooted in productivity culture and unrealistic timelines, and why homemaking doesn’t actually move on a particular timeline. This conversation is about releasing the pressure to “catch up” and learning how to work within your own timeline, with more compassion, clarity, and support. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt like no matter how much you do, it’s never enough Compared your home, pace, or progress to others and felt discouraged Struggled with the pressure to be productive, efficient, or “get it done” at home Felt overwhelmed by clutter, unfinished projects, or long to-do lists Wondered if you’re falling behind, or just living in a different life We’ll explore: Why “being behind” is often a false narrative rooted in hustle and productivity culture How unrealistic expectations, including those shaped by neurodiversity,  affect our relationship with time Why simplifying your home, goals, and focus can instantly create more spaciousness How routines and systems can support progress without pressure Why cyclical thinking offers a gentler, more sustainable way to understand homemaking Rather than seeing home as a race or a series of finish lines, this episode invites you to see it as something living, something that unfolds in seasons, cycles, and small steps forward. If you’ve been rushing, shaming yourself, or feeling like you’re constantly behind, this conversation is here to remind you of something important:  You’re not failing. You don’t need to catch up. You’re on your own timeline. Let’s slow this down, soften the expectations, and come home to a pace that actually supports you  and the life you’re creating. 095 - When Everything Feels Heavy: How Home Supports Us in Stressful and Uncertain Times

In this episode of The Common Nest Podcast, we’re talking about something many of us are quietly carrying right now: the feeling that everything is heavy, uncertain, and just too much. When it feels like the world is falling apart, things are overwhelming and motivation is gone, it can be hard to know how to keep going, especially when life and home responsibilities don’t pause. Today’s conversation is a gentle reminder that nothing is wrong with you, and that the work of home can become a source of steadiness and support rather than another demand. We’ll explore why this season feels so exhausting, what’s really happening beneath the surface when you don’t feel like doing anything, and how home, when approached with compassion and intention, can help hold us through hard times. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt emotionally or physically drained and unsure how to keep going Struggled to find motivation when life feels heavy or uncertain Wondered why even simple home tasks feel harder than they used to Longed for your home to feel supportive instead of overwhelming Needed permission to do less and care for yourself more gently We’ll explore: Why feeling unmotivated or shut down makes sense during stressful seasons How the work of home can support your nervous system instead of draining it Five gentle ways to let home care for you, rooted in the Five Foundations of Home Why simplicity, routines, beauty, and honoring your season matter more than productivity How the way we tend our homes quietly shapes the emotional life of our families Whether you’re moving through a season of uncertainty, exhaustion, or quiet overwhelm, this episode is here to remind you that you don’t have to do everything, and you don’t have to do it perfectly. Home doesn’t need to be another place you perform or push through. It can be a place where you land, soften, and find enough support to keep going, one small act of care at a time. You matter. Your home matters. And even in heavy seasons, homemaking  makes a difference. 094 - January Reset Without the Reinvention: Why Home Feels Heavy and How to Move Forward

In this episode, we’re slowing down the January noise and having a different kind of conversation about fresh starts, overwhelm, and why home can feel so heavy this time of year. January is supposed to feel hopeful,  a clean slate filled with motivation, goals, and new energy. But for so many people, it doesn’t feel that way at all. It feels heavy, exhausting, and quietly overwhelming. Today, we’re exploring why that heaviness makes sense,  especially after a season of carrying so much, and why the answer isn’t reinventing yourself, fixing your home, or trying harder. This episode is an invitation to step out of pressure and into a softer, more intentional reset. One that begins within. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt heavy or unmotivated in January when you “should” feel hopeful Wondered why home feels hard even when things are technically working Felt overwhelmed by the pressure to reset, declutter, or reinvent yourself Managed your home and life well,  but still felt restless or dissatisfied Longed for a gentler, more meaningful way to move forward We’ll explore: Why things might be feeling  heavy instead of hopeful How cultural pressure, invisible labor, and mental load impact how home feels Why overwhelm is a signal, not a personal failure The difference between managing your home and leading it with intention What a January reset can look like without reinvention or burnout Why home truly starts within, and where to begin if you want change that lasts If January feels heavy instead of hopeful, you’re not broken  and you’re not behind. This episode is here to remind you that you don’t need a new version of yourself. You need fewer expectations, clearer direction, and support that honors where you are right now. Take a deep breath. Start where you are. And remember. you don’t have to do this alone. 093 - The Year You Stop Doing It All Alone: A Slower, More Supported Way to Start the New Year

In this episode, we’re welcoming the New Year in a different way,  slower, softer, and with far less pressure to rush into goals and resolutions. January often arrives with loud expectations: new year, new you, big plans, fresh starts. But for many of us, especially after a long and full holiday season, the truth is we’re tired. Still recovering. Still integrating what the past year held. Today’s episode is an honest reflection on post-holiday exhaustion, winter energy, and why the beginning of the year doesn’t have to be about hustle or doing more. Instead, we’re exploring what it might look like to rest, receive support, and finally stop doing it all alone. I’m sharing personal reflections on my own relationship with the holidays and how cyclical living has reshaped the way I approach the New Year. We’ll also talk about my Word of the Year and how learning to receive support has led me to more intentionally ask for help, community, and shared leadership. This episode is also an invitation to reimagine homemaking as meaningful leadership and to question the belief that women running households are meant to do everything by themselves. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt exhausted or relieved when the holidays were finally over Struggled with New Year goal-setting because you’re still tired Felt pressure to “do more” when what you really need is rest Carried the mental and emotional load of home mostly on your own Longed for community, support, or shared understanding in homemaking We’ll explore: Why January often isn’t the best time for big goals or bold action How winter energy invites rest, reflection, and mindset work What it really means to receive support and why it can feel vulnerable Why learning to ask for help can be a powerful turning point The parallels between running a business and running a household Why homemakers deserve community, support, and shared wisdom A new vision for homemaking that centers wellbeing, leadership, and connection If you’re feeling overwhelmed by New Year pressure or quietly longing for more support at home, this episode is a reminder that you don’t have to do it all alone. Maybe this is the year you take it slower. Maybe this is the year you ask for help. Maybe this is the year you let yourself be supported. And that might change everything. 092 - Why You’re Still Tired, Even When You’re Resting: The Different Types of Rest

In this episode, we’re slowing things down and leaning into rest, especially in the quiet, blurry in-between week between Christmas and New Year’s. That strange stretch of time when routines are off, days blend together, and even though life feels slower… we don’t always feel rested. This episode is an invitation to gently question why rest can feel so hard, even when we finally stop, and to consider what rest actually looks like in winter, when energy is naturally lower and the world invites us to soften rather than hustle. We’re talking about rest through cyclical living, letting go of the pressure to rush into the new year, and exploring the different types of rest our bodies, minds, and hearts may be craving right now. This episode is for you if you’ve ever: Felt tired even though you’ve been resting more Expected this week to feel restorative… but it didn’t Struggled with the pressure to “start fresh” in the new year Felt caught between slowing down and needing to keep going Longed for permission to rest without guilt We’ll explore: Why rest doesn’t always feel restful, especially this time of year How winter and cyclical living invite a slower, gentler rhythm Why rest isn’t a reward, but a requirement The seven different types of rest, and how to recognize which one you need most Simple, compassionate ways to lean into real rest during the in-between week and beyond Whether you’re listening during the holidays or finding this episode later in the year, this conversation is here to remind you that you’re not doing rest wrong, you may just be needing a different kind of rest. There’s no rush to become someone new.  No need to override the season you’re in. Rest is allowed. Let this episode be an invitation to slow down, listen inward, and enter this season,  and the new year, feeling more supported, more grounded, and more at home within yourself.
