A Connected Nevada: Solving the Physician Shortage with Unified Clinical Communication

Connect with Us Nevada ranks 45th in the nation for physicians per capita, and all 17 counties are federally designated health professional shortage areas. In this episode, Dr. Kevin Halow, surgeon, veteran, and Co-Founder of ClinicianCore, breaks down what physician isolation actually costs Nevada: delayed curbside consults that go undocumented, care transitions that turn into paperwork relays, and burnout driven by fragmented communication tools. Dr. Halow lays out A Connected Nevada, a statewide initiative launching this September built on three pieces: HCO Practice HQ for intra-office routing, HCC Consult Core for documented interprofessional consults, and Doc Lounge, a verified peer community for physicians. All three run on a secure, HIPAA-compliant unified clinical communication platform built exclusively for physicians. Topics covered:  Why physician density alone does not explain Nevada's shortageThe real cost of undocumented curbside consultsHow care transitions break down without a shared communication layerWhat burnout costs the healthcare system nationallyWhy Nevada is positioned to move first on this problemAbout the ClinicianCore Podcast Hosted by Dr. Kevin Halow, the ClinicianCore Podcast explores unified clinical communication, physician burnout reduction, HIPAA-compliant collaboration, and the real impact of AI in healthcare. The Referral Loop Nobody Closes

Connect with Us A patient comes back to you six weeks after a referral and asks what the specialist found. You open the chart and there is nothing. No summary, no note, nothing. Dr. Kevin Halow, surgeon and Chief Medical Officer of ClinicianCore, walks through why this is routine, not a one-off, and why it is a clinical problem before it is ever an operational one. When the loop does not close, you are making the next call for that patient with a gap in the record. This episode covers where the return trip of a referral actually breaks, why nobody owns that step today, and what it looks like when a referral carries a status instead of just a send date. The Hidden Reason Physician Groups Lose 1 in 8 Consult Claims

Connect with Us Independent surgical practices have historically lost roughly 1 in 8 interprofessional consult claims, not to clinical criteria, but to documentation gaps between the consult and the billing desk. Dr. Kevin Halow explains where that loss actually happens. Dr. Kevin Halow MD, MBA, surgeon, veteran, and Chief Medical Officer of ClinicianCore, unpacks a statistic that has stayed with him: roughly 1 in 8 interprofessional consult claims at independent surgical practices are lost, not because the consult didn't happen, but because the documentation trail broke down somewhere between the phone call and the billing desk. Drawing on a real co-surgery case and lessons from military trauma care, Dr. Halow explains why hand-off discipline, not clinical error, is the real driver behind denied consult claims, and what changes when every step of a consult is captured and routed automatically. Reachable vs. Available: Why Static Call Schedules Are Quietly Burning Out Physicians

Connect with Us Dr. Kevin Halow, MD MBA, breaks down why a static call schedule and a schedule-aware one produce two very different physician experiences, and two very different burnout outcomes. At 9 PM, Dr. Kevin Halow's phone rang. He was not on call. He'd swapped that day with a colleague. He answered anyway, because that's what physicians are trained to do. In this episode, Dr. Halow breaks down the difference between being reachable and being available, and why a static call schedule can't tell the two apart. He covers why physicians early in a rotation absorb the most misrouted calls, what a roughly 58-hour physician workweek does to the recovery time clinicians need, and why a swap made yesterday can still be invisible to the system routing today's calls. He also offers a simple self-audit: track every misrouted call for a few weeks, note how long it takes to reconfirm the schedule after each swap, and see whether the pattern is noise or signal worth naming to your group. The Alert System That Was Never Designed With Physicians in Mind

Connect with Us I was mid-fem-pop bypass, everything running smoothly. Flow established, team locked in, music playing off my phone to keep the room steady. Then the audio kept cutting out. Not once. Not twice. Over and over through the case. When I finally glanced at the screen, it wasn’t a critical alert. It was a refill request that could have waited until afternoon clinic. A duplicate allergy warning I’d already cleared twice this week. A co‑pay notification I have no idea why I received. And buried underneath all that noise, a stat potassium on my next surgical patient — the one thing that actually mattered. In my new today's episode of The Connected Practice, I trace where your alert system actually came from: a 2011 certification requirement that asked vendors to make an alert fire, not to make it fire at the right moment for the right person. That single choice is the ancestor of nearly every interruption in your day. The exhaustion you feel isn't a discipline failing. It's traceable engineering. Which means it's fixable. The 30-Second Exercise: Counting the Alert Override Burden No One Tracks

Connect with Us Count to 30. One Mississippi, two Mississippi. That's how long it takes to open a notification, recognize it changes nothing you're about to do, and dismiss it. Now do that 40 times before lunch. In this episode, Dr. Kevin Halow, MD, MBA, does the counting no one else in clinical medicine does and shows where all those 30-second units are hiding inside your day. The research is more specific than most physicians realize. A systematic review of 23 studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association found physician alert override rates ranging from 46% to 96%. Nanji and colleagues reported a 73% override rate for medication-related alerts alone at a large academic outpatient center. The AMA's most recent national data puts physicians at roughly 13 hours a week of indirect patient care — and alert review lives inside that number, uncounted, with no line item of its own. The cost isn't only time. It's clinical decision fatigue, compounding silently across every dismissal, every day, for which no one is keeping score. Dr. Halow also walks through the design principle behind HCO Practice HQ: role-aware routing that treats physician attention as the finite, valuable resource it actually is. Topics in this episode: why physician alert override rates reach 96%, how 40 daily 30-second dismissals compound into structural clinical decision fatigue, what the AMA data on indirect patient care actually contains, and what role-aware routing looks like in practice. The Coordination Tax What's Really Eating Your Clinical Day

Connect with Us Every physician practice carries a coordination tax nobody agreed to pay. In this episode, Dr. Kevin Halow, surgeon, Air Force veteran, and Co-Founder and CMO of ClinicianCore, names what it is and what it actually costs. Dr. Halow makes a distinction most efficiency conversations skip entirely: documentation burden and coordination burden are not the same problem. AI scribes reduce charting time. They do not touch the routing slip at the front desk, the lab result moving through three intermediaries, or the billing flag that cannot reach the clinical team. Those are coordination failures. And they are costing independent practices more than any workforce analysis currently tracks. This episode examines why fragmented physician coordination tools create a daily time drag, where the handoff breakdowns actually occur inside independent outpatient practice, and what purpose-built intra-office clinical communication infrastructure changes. Run your practice through the ClinicianCore Impact Estimator at cliniciancore.com to model what fragmented communication is costing your team. HCO Soft Launch Q&A: What 100+ Clinicians Said About Healthcare Communication

Connect with Us During the HCO Practice HQ soft launch, more than 100 clinicians signed up — physicians, nurses, administrators, and advanced practice providers from across the healthcare ecosystem. Their questions were sharp. Their skepticism was honest. And their feedback is shaping what HCO becomes before the full September 2026 release. In this episode, Dr. Kevin Halow walks through the most common questions and feedback from those conversations: Do healthcare teams really need another communication platform? Dr. Halow explains why the problem is not the number of tools; it is the fragmentation across them. Why not just use WhatsApp? Consumer messaging applications were never designed for HIPAA compliance, auditability, role-based access, on-call routing, or organizational governance. Convenience without accountability is not a solution for clinical environments. Will smart routing cause me to miss something critical? No. Smart routing delivers information intelligently, not selectively. The right message still reaches the right person, with less noise around it. How does HCO actually reduce burnout? Approximately 50 percent of physicians report experiencing burnout. Communication overload is a documented contributor. Reducing unnecessary alerts, duplicate notifications, and coverage uncertainty reduces friction throughout the clinical day. Can a three-provider clinic benefit from this? Yes. Communication failures hit smaller practices harder because there is less administrative buffer to absorb the impact. Early access to HCO Practice HQ is open now and closes before the September 2026 full launch. Visit cliniciancore.com to join.
