Every two months we're joined in conversation about life's sense and nonsense, by students and employees of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. We share our experiences in life on big topics, such as activism, family, anxiety, sex and grief. Every episode has a follow-up event on campus, where we expand the conversation. The Connective is made by the people of NEWConnective, the university's platform for life's bigger questions, from religion to philosophy; and meaning to connecting. We produce this podcast in cooperation with VU Campusradio.

The aim of The Disconnective is to inform and expand our knowledge and to stay in conversation. Miranda, from VU’s Stage for Dialogue 3D is hosting the show and together with her guest she zooms in, describes and discusses what’s happening on the VU campus. Whether you take a clear stance on the war and atrocities in Gaza, Israel and Lebanon; whether you are part of a minority that has a clear connection to the war in the middle east, or you feel like you are in no position to have an opinion on what is happening; The Disconnective tries to deepen the understanding of the impact on the VU academic community. In this episode we discuss: To what extend is the VU community divided? Are different groups heard? And is that necessary? How to you keep a community together in case of pronounced differences and positions? And how important is that? Is dialogue always possible? We enter into a conversation with Jay Dehnert (chair of VU Pride) about being someone, and aspiring to be someone, and the individual versus the communal self.     Realist Concerns with Non-Violent Ideals

    [CONTENT GUIDANCE: this episode explores themes of violence, such as sexual violence, and might be triggering for some.] Violence is everywhere around us; sometimes today's world seems to be engulfed in it. In this episode, we engage in conversation about how to relate to this violence, and about the possible response of non-violence. To do this, Marc and Thirza (fellow program maker at NEWConnective) ask Peter Victor, student of Peace, Trauma and Religion, how non-violence takes shape for him; both far away and closer to home.     Marc remembers vividly how Russia's invasion of Ukraine made him obsess over the conflict. That is, until it numbed him out; and what was a news obsession, turned into a news aversion. But what if you don't have the luxury of zoning out? Marc and fellow program maker Selma, join conversation with Lilia about being affected by or involved with global conflict. Selma Boulmalf and Marc Lamain are program makers in the NEWConnective team. Also, Selma is an organizer around the conflict in Israel-Palestine. Lilia Sarry is a VU alumna in work and organizational psychology, who came to Amsterdam when her home Ukraine was invaded by Russia. Together they wonder: How do you deal with the dissonance in living in a relatively safe area, whilst affected by or involved with global conflict? What is it like to experience these tensions while walking around on campus? And should we even compare the conflicts between Israel and Palestine; and Ukraine and Russia?
