    #026 3 Simple Steps to Sleep Better

    3 SIMPLE IDEAS FOR BETTER SLEEP 1. Close Your Mouth Stop eating/snacking after a certain time No caffeine 10 hours before bedtime No food/snacks 2 hours before bedtime No liquids 2 hours before bedtime 2. Set the Alarm Mine is 8pm… 2 hours before bedtime It’s a trigger in your mind to shift gears from whatever it is you’re doing to get ready for bed. It begins a routine created to settle your down for a good night’s sleep 3. Digital Curfew Shut down all the electronics TV, smart phone, iPad What are you missing? Probably nothing! Read a book. Listen to a podcast. Settle into an evening routine 2 hours minimum before bed The Key is Consistency You don’t do this for a few nights and quit if things don’t work. Give it 2 weeks minimum… every night. Same Closed Mouth. Same Evening Alarm. Same Digital Curfew. Monitor your sleep - Make a simple chart Check off all 3 each night. Record your “lights out” time.     #024 A Story of Faith and Belief

    Some people call it coincidence. Other call it divine intervention. Yet others label it a miracle. I'll let you decide. Here are the broad strokes. I'd been in a job for 8 months, working as a youth pastor. I walked into the office on a Monday morning. The pastor called me into his office, handed me a check for $1,000 and told me my services were no longer needed. I had the morning to clear out my office and that was it. We were renting a house for $250/month, so I had 4 months rent. My wife was working part time bringing in about $80/week. So we had money for food. That was it. We had options, short term and long term. I looked at my wife and said to her in all earnestness, "Do we really believe and trust in God completely or not?" We prayed together, made a decision together, and 4 months later (do the math) moved to another state with a new job for me, new direction for my wife and the rest, they say, is history.     #023 What Gets Measured Gets Done

    Everything is changing.  There are some things in your life you want to keep doing and there are other things that need to be adjusted, replaced or eliminated. We're talking about creating good routines and habits in your life and I know what get’s measured gets done.   "What Gets Measured Gets Done" is a phrase I first heard this first from Michael Hyatt.   Route 66 Theory... According to a 2009 study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, it takes 18 to 254 days for a person to form a new habit. The study also concluded that, on average, it takes 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic. What you want is a behavior to become automatic.   A Target Keeps You Focused...  "The Patriot," a movie starring Mel Gibson… Oldest son is arrested and taken away by the British army. He goes after them with his two younger sons. He’s been teaching them how to shoot a musket.  Rule of thumb when aiming. “Aim small, miss small.”  “Aim small, miss small” means that when you're aiming at a target, rather than aiming at the whole target, you should aim at a small section of the target. This way, if you miss, instead of not hitting the target, you just miss the small part of the target you were aiming for.   Milestones Keep You Moving... I solo-hiked the Bear Lake to Grand Lake trail 3 years ago. The first 4.2 miles are all uphill. I couldn’t wait to get to the flat-top. I also decided not to stop for any reason un til I got there.     #022 What You Believe About This World Matters

    Seeing this world through God’s eyes matters.       "God must be blind, so many people died in the past year."        Rudy’s search for an answer.  "I’ve been a priest for over 40 years and I only know 2 things with certainty. There is a God, and I’m not Him."       God is not blind but I believe Him to be heartbroken.       God is not a chess player and we are not pawns or kings.       If I had to fully understand something before believing it, I’d never drive a car, own a computer, use a cell phone…    Seeing this world as it could be matters.       This is not rose-colored glasses.       If you see it as it is, depression is your only option.       If you see it as it could be, you see hope… possibilities…   Believing you can contribute matters.       Yeah, you! It all starts with you being a better you.       It all starts with me being a better me.       Contribution starts with contributing to your own well-being.   DISCLAIMER (Kinda)... I feel like this is the worst LIVE audio I've posted. I almost didn't post it, yet here it is. Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly, especially if you believe in personal development.

    #020 How to Get Over a Terrible Day

    HOW TO GET OVER A TERRIBLE DAY STOP AND BREATHE . . . Inhale 6 seconds... through the nose Hold 2 seconds Exhale 7 seconds… though the mouth 4x = 1 minute 1st… Define “Terrible” My terrible may not be your terrible. Definitions matter. One big thing or a deluge of little things? Incoming Tide is many little things building up. Tidal Wave is ONE BIG THING. 2nd… Break Down the Pieces One big thing or several not-so-big things? Break it all down. All the little things building up. The ONE big thing… can you break it down? Write them all down on paper (Make a list) 3rd… Become Solution-Oriented Write out possible solutions to each item on the list Remember, there may be more than one solution to each item. 4th… Put the List in Order Most feasible win. Doing this is the easiest to accomplish. Most rewarding win. It’ll feel great to get this one done. Most eliminating win. If I get this win, it will eliminate other  items on my list. 5th… Take Action… one item at a time The first 4 points are all actions you’ve just taken Do what you just decided to do. “THIS TERRIBLE DAY WON’T DEFINE ME!"     #019 Would You Rather Be Lucky or Good?

    Last Saturday, in the NCAA men's basketball semi-final matchup between undefeated Gonzaga and UCLA, in overtime, Jalen Suggs of Gonzaga shoots a nearly half-court shot as time runs out. It banks off the glass and in...FOR THE WIN! It's being called one of the greatest college basketball games of all time. Analyst Skip Bayless disagrees and said this via twitter. "No idea how you can call that an all-time great college basketball game when it was won by a lucky shot." Skip Bayless has since been massively roasted for uttering such a statement. This begs the question, "Was Jalen Suggs lucky?" Let me ask you, "Would YOU rather be lucky or good?” Being good prepares you to be lucky. "Luck comes to the prepared mind… how any hours of basketball has that boy played? Yes, it was a lucky shot, but it came after hours of preparation to be in the right place at the right time to have the opportunity to take the shot.
