Animal Care in the Community with Hannah Shepherd from zumi

Hannah is a Registered Veterinary Nurse with 38 years in the veterinary profession and a proud BVNA member. She’s the founder of zumi, a pet care app that connects pet owners with Registered Vet Nurses for trusted, affordable in-home pet care. The app gives pet owners more accessible options for pet care, supports vet teams in caring for their clients outside the practice, and helps vet nurses use their skills beyond traditional clinical roles.Outside of work you’ll find her hanging out with her family, going to the theatre, de-stressing in a yoga class, or spending time with rescue pals - Loula (terrier x) and Toast Malone (ginger kitty). Hannah is Chair of Trustees for the Michael Guest Charitable Foundation, and a passionate advocate for supporting registered charities. She loves to travel and has spent time abroad volunteering for wildlife protection and conservation. It was great to chat to Hannah and find out more. I am not paid by zumi in any way - I simply think it is a great idea as animal care is an unregulated profession. Grief, art and sharing lives with cats - chatting to lawyer and writer Katia Colitti

Katia and I spoke about grief, art, how community cats in Brazil were helped in such a clever and compassionate way and making science accessible. It was a pleasure to chat to her and it will always be a memorable podcast for many reasons. Katia Colitti is a lawyer and writer whose work has been published in Animal Welfare (Cambridge University Press) and Global Journal of Animal Law. Katia grew up in Ukraine, lived in the U.S. for over a decade, and, since 2012, has been based in Belgium. She has shared her home with three cats for nearly two decades. Her sole remaining feline famiy member is Margo, a playful and communicative 19-year old, who brings joy to every day.  A lifelong ailurophile with an MSc in International Animal Welfare, Ethics, and Law from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at The University of Edinburgh, Katia has a special interest and extensive experience in geriatric and diabetic cat care. Katia writes on Substack about cat health and welfare, the human-cat relationship, cats in the arts, and cat loss grief. Meeting Kris(tine) Hill, an Anthrozoologist, researcher and educator from eCATT

Today’s guest is Kris(tine) Hill, a researcher and founding member of the Cat Academic Think Tank (e-CATT), a cross-disciplinary collective dedicated to the scholarly exploration of cats and human–cat relationships. Her work engages with the cultural, ethical, and social dimensions of feline lives, bringing critical insight to the ways cats shape — and are shaped by — human worlds. Through collaborative research, public scholarship, and participation in forums like the Critical Cat CafĂŠ, Kris(tine) contributes to expanding conversations around more-than-human studies and the serious academic consideration of cats as subjects in their own right. Today, we’ll be diving into her work, her research interests, and what it really means to think critically — and creatively — about cats.
