    The Journey to Captain

Andy Roch talks to Nicole, Marliez, and Vikar, three leaders in the yachting industry from across the world, about their journey to yachting, their experience of being women in senior positions, and the obstacles they've faced. We cover themes of discrimination, parenthood, leadership and mentoring, and look ahead to what they think the future holds. Marliez is a Superyacht Captain and Chief Officer who has worked in the industry for 20 years. She worked her way up from the deck to Captain and has recently received her Master 3000 qualification. She's currently taking a sabbatical before deciding the next stage of her career. Nicole started her career on the water on dive boats. Working on boats across California, Mexico and Hawaii, she 'accidentally' got into yachting having never aspired to join the industry. She came in as a captain, having already completed her courses on dive boats and has now worked for 13 years in the yachting world. Vikar is a recently appointed Chief Officer who came into the industry when she was 18. She originally started in the 'wrong place' on the boat, as a stewardess, before realising she was more suited to the deck than the interior. She is currently working on a dual-season 55m motor yacht in Turkey and the Maldives. Tune in to this episode for an inspirational chat which gives powerful insight into the current state of affairs in yachting. The Crew Academy is the Super Yacht industry’s go-to training provider for all Purser, Yacht Interior, Management, Leadership, Administrative and mandatory educational courses.Find out more about The Crew Academy: thecrewacademy.comFollow @thecrewacademy on Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook.Soundtrack License:The soundtracks used in this episode were licensed through Adobe Stock.
