A Trip Into Late Night Past

Having been an [adult swim] fan for what is now reaching 2 decades, this podcast is a great historical look back and a great reminiscing of what made me fall in love with adult animation and indie comedy. Matthew Jay and Steve Yurko bring on amazing guests each episode and have been chronicling a late night block of entertainment that was so vital and instrumental in fostering a love of comedy, animation, anime, and the insanely weird. This is a podcast for anyone who has stayed up late with a group of friends and cheered when that black screen with white text hit the television ready to keep you company into the early hours of the morning.

Split

This is a show that I should like better. I have heard the hosts before on other things and really enjoyed them, but I think the issue here is a lack of focus (which they have stated before is intentional to be fair). As a result it like it has 3 modes. Niche facts about the topic (which I really like), Chris Farley show comments about the subject (remember how cool it was when), and digressions that feel like it should be part of the “bevilacqua heating and air” skit from the Dana Gould podcast.

I like similar conversational-style stuff a lot (What a Cartoon, Adult Swim, for instance) but there are times where they are almost free associating topics for 10-15 minutes it feels like. If that is fine with you then go for it, just know that it feels like many times 1/3 of it can be about stuff that isn’t in the actual episode title.

Encyclopedic and Entertaining

Matt and Steve know more about cartoons than anyone I’ve ever met. It also helps that they’re both funny as hell and have that great podcast effect where you feel like they’ve been your real life friends for years.

Highly recommended to Adult Swim fans.
