He is currently a Visiting Professor in the Graduate Program in International Affairs of the New School University, New York City. He is also the co-founder of Democracy at Work and host of their nationally syndicated show Economic Update. Over the last 25 years, in collaboration with his colleague, Stephen Resnick, he has developed a new approach to political economy. While it retains and systematically elaborates the Marxist notion of class as surplus labor, it rejects the economic determinism typical of most schools of economics and usually associated with Marxism as well.   In this episode, we start by talking about socialism and its different versions. We discuss the impact of Soviet Russia and Mao’s China in how people think about socialism and communism. We discuss a common misconception that claims that socialism has always failed. We then talk about Marxism. We discuss the most recurring problems of capitalism with a focus on inequality and instability, and how people react to economic and political instability. Her research program integrates human biology and anthropology, with a focus on the interaction between anatomy, physiology, evolution, and the environment. She explores the physiological and behavioral mechanisms necessary to cope with and adapt to extreme climate and physical activity. Dr. Ocobock’s research is at the intersection of metabolic physiology, evolution, culture, and behavior. In this episode, we first talk about human energetics, how people adapt to extreme environments, the case of the reindeer herders from Finland, the role of the adipose tissue in metabolism, issues with BMI measurements, and sex differences in human energetics. She studies the acquisition and evolution of human language. Her work bridges the biological and linguistic subfields and involves both comparative and developmental approaches to communication. She is interested in how the multimodal aspects of communication contribute to and constrain the construction of meaning in spontaneous interaction. She is particularly interested in whether gesture played a role in the origins of human language.   In this episode, we talk about the evolution of gestures and human language. We start by discussing how old are gestures in evolution, what counts as a gesture, whether ape gestures are intentional, how flexible are ape gestures, whether they are innate or learned, and whether they have meanings. We also discuss whether they share features with human language. We talk about how gestures aid cognition.
