    The Nine Pea-Hens and the Golden Apples

    Tonight I'll be reading a selection from The Violet Fairy Book, edited by the English folklorist Andrew Lang. The copy I'm reading from is an unaltered and unabridged republication of the first 1901 edition. Originally a work of Serbian epic poetry dating back to the 19th century, "The Nine Pea-Hens and the Golden Apples" is a story of love, magic, curiosity, folly, good deeds repaid, and hey, there's also a dragon! CW: threats of beheading The prince is told that if he does not accomplish a certain task, he will lose his head. He is then briefly led to a courtyard surrounded by posts on which men's heads are stuck. Thanks for stopping by the Drowsy Den, and enjoy this fantastical fairy tale!     Tonight I’ll be reading Rudyard Kipling’s How the Rhinoceros Got His Skin, originally published in 1898. If you’ve ever wanted to know why the rhinoceros is wrinkly or has such a bad temper, this bedtime story is for you! *if you’re familiar with this story, you may notice that I have omitted a potentially sensitive word from my reading which appears several times throughout. My hope is that all listeners feel safe and included, and to make that happen, sometimes small adaptations are necessary— especially in stories published over a century ago!* Thanks for stopping by The Drowsy Den!

    The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant

    First episode!!! Yay!! Tonight I’ll be reading to you about a certain little elephant I’ve loved since I was small. Originally published in 1931 in French, The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff is a classic, beautifully done children’s story. This episode will be accompanied by calming music and the relaxing sounds of real pages turning, to get that cozy authentic feel:) Disclaimer: there are some aspects of this story that may prove distressing to some listeners, which I will list below. Please take care of yourself! 1. Babar’s mother is killed by a hunter early on in the story. 2. Babar marries his cousin (however, he is an elephant, so take that how you will). With that being said, the story was written for kids and is generally lovely, and one of my favorites!
