Gary Sorace "Mastermind of the Mat"

Long before national rankings, super tournaments and powerhouse programs became the norm, Gary Sorace was helping lay the foundation for modern Ohio wrestling. A 1970 Ohio State Champion from Maple Heights, Cleveland State wrestler, longtime coach and one of the most influential assistants in St. Edward wrestling history, Sorace joins The Dynasty Effect Podcast to share stories spanning more than five decades in the sport. Gary explains how a chance meeting with legendary Coach Howard Ferguson changed his life, eventually leading him to help build the early St. Edward dynasty. He reveals how Ferguson spent hours filling legal pads with notes, how the famous technique charts hanging in the St. Edward wrestling room were created, and how the training methods from Maple Heights became the blueprint for one of the greatest programs in America. The conversation also uncovers Gary's role in creating the original Quad of Champions, an event that helped inspire future national super events like the Ironman Tournament, along with his philosophy of always seeking out the nation's best competition. Gary opens up about the heartbreaking end to his own college career after learning Cleveland State had failed to file his redshirt paperwork, costing him his final NCAA Tournament opportunity despite a 14-1 season. Instead of walking away from the sport, he poured his passion into coaching and helping build championship programs.
