The Energy Xchange

Colleen Wolak

Welcome to The Energy Xchange, a podcast for deep feelers and quiet leaders. This is where we explore what becomes possible when you stop fighting your natural energy and start working with it, in your business, relationships, and daily life. I’m Colleen Wolak, a corporate marketer turned mentor for my fellow deep feelers and author of "The Empath Detox". As a highly sensitive professional who spent years untangling the patterns of overthinking, people-pleasing, and shrinking myself to feel safe, I now help others step into their power without losing the superpower of their softness. We don’t have to be loud to be seen, and we don’t have to push to be powerful. Everything is energy… let’s start this exchange!

Paying Your Dues or Paying The Price?

Years into a career I'd worked incredibly hard for, I found out what a brand-new employee was making — and it was almost as much as me. My first reaction was: they should have to pay their dues. But when I sat with it, what I actually meant was, they should have to pay the same price I did. And those are not the same thing. In this episode, I'm pulling apart a phrase almost all of us nod along to — "pay your dues" — and asking what we really mean when we say it. Because there's a version that builds real capacity, and there's a version that just asks you to accept being underpaid, overlooked, and endlessly patient. One develops you. The other just charges you a price you may have already paid. This is about the stories we carry — that we have to struggle before we deserve success, prove ourselves before we can ask for more, earn rest, earn ease — and where else in our lives those beliefs might quietly be running the show. In This Episode: 00:46 The two very different things people mean by "pay your dues"02:12 Growing capacity vs suffering03:18 The new hire's salary that forced me to look inward05:05 The stories we carry about struggle, worth, and earning ease05:39 The difference between building capacity and paying a price06:14 Question to reflect on if you're in a season of "paying your dues"Who This Episode Is For: Highly sensitive people, empaths, and deep feelersHard workers who rarely feel they've earned the right to ask for moreAnyone who's stayed underpaid or overlooked longer than they should havePeople untangling old beliefs about struggle and self-worthSensitive high-achievers recovering from over-givingAnyone wondering if they're building capacity — or just paying a price New episodes every Wednesday. Knowing When It's Time to Move On

I spent five years in a job I dreaded... in the kind of workplace where everyone quietly packs up at 4:50 to sprint out the door at 5pm. I told myself staying was the responsible thing to do. Looking back, I'd learned everything that job had to teach me within the first year. In this episode, I'm unpacking something I found myself thinking about while traveling through Italy and Greece last month: how to tell the difference between something that feels difficult because it's growing you, and something that feels difficult because it's shrinking you. Because not all hard is created equal — one kind leaves you exhausted but proud, and the other leaves you exhausted and unfamiliar to yourself. This isn't a conversation about leaving everything that's hard. It's about getting out of autopilot, learning to voice what you actually need before you walk away, and recognizing that staying somewhere unquestioned has a cost too. This Episode Dives Into: Why we romanticize loyalty (and when it's really just fear) [01:24]The five-year job that taught me everything in year one [02:21]The difference between hard that grows you and hard that shrinks you [04:48]Why you owe it to yourself to speak up before you leave [05:39]What it looks like when a working relationship evolves instead of ending [06:31]The hidden cost of staying that we forget to calculate [07:43]The one question that works for jobs, relationships, friendships, and more [08:32]Who This Episode Is For: Highly sensitive people, empaths, and deep feelersAnyone standing at a crossroads with a job, relationship, or cityPeople who stay out of loyalty, guilt, or fear of starting overThose learning to advocate for their needs before walking awaySensitive professionals craving more autonomy and flexibilityAnyone asking whether they're becoming more of themselves — or lessThe Energy Xchange is a podcast for highly sensitive people, empaths, INFJs, and deep feelers navigating relationships, business, visibility, and personal growth. "Wait... Am I the Narcissist?"

Have you ever gone through a season where you felt so consumed by your own problems that you started wondering, “Wait... am I a narcissist?” In this episode of The Energy Xchange, we’re unpacking the difference between narcissism, self-focus, and what happens when a deeply caring person loses the capacity to care in the way they normally do. In this episode, we explore: Why deeply introspective people often fear they’re selfish or narcissisticThe difference between self-focus and self-importanceWhy emotional exhaustion can make you feel disconnected from your usual caring natureHow survival mode limits your capacity for othersWhy the better question may be, “Do I have the emotional capacity to care right now?”How to get curious about what is knocking you out of safety instead of shaming yourself for strugglingThis episode is not a diagnosis or a deep clinical breakdown of narcissism. It’s a compassionate conversation for the person who has ever spiraled into the question, “Is this who I really am?” during a season when they simply didn’t have much left to give. The Energy Xchange is a podcast for highly sensitive people, empaths, INFJs, and deep feelers navigating relationships, business, visibility, and personal growth. Why Small Injustices Hijack Your Whole Day

I was standing in a gorgeous, fully renovated hotel room in Rome, the exact room I'd booked, the one with the terrace and the view, and I still couldn't let it go. The problem was solved. I was happy. And yet there I was, rehearsing customer service speeches in the shower, revisiting the hotel's website, feeling my heart rate climb every time I thought about it. Why? In this episode, a small "on principle" moment in Rome cracked open a much bigger question for me: why do tiny injustices hijack our entire day, while objectively bigger things roll right off?  If you've ever been told you're "too sensitive," this one goes somewhere you might not expect. This Episode Dives Into: My Rome hotel saga — and the moment it stopped being about the roomWhy a $10 overcharge can occupy more headspace than something objectively bigger The uncomfortable truth beneath the need for justiceHow "you're being too sensitive" becomes a wound you carry for yearsJustice vs. validation vs. regulation — the three needs we constantly confuseWhy your body keeps fighting a battle that's already overHow we pile self-invalidation on top of frustration and make it worseWhat it actually takes to trust your experience without needing anyone to agreeWho This Episode Is For: Highly sensitive people, empaths, and deep feelersAnyone with a strong sense of fairness who can't always let things goPeople who replay conversations long after they're overThose who grew up hearing "you're overreacting"Sensitive professionals learning to advocate without spiralingAnyone ready to stop outsourcing their peace to someone else's apologyThe Energy Xchange is a podcast for highly sensitive people, empaths, INFJs, and deep feelers navigating relationships, business, visibility, and personal growth. When Marketing Yourself Feels Gross

This week, we're getting honest about why promoting your work can feel so uncomfortable when you're someone who genuinely loves to teach, create, write, podcast, or share what you know. Because for a lot of deep feelers, contribution feels safe. Selling feels exposed. And if you're not careful, you can end up giving endlessly, building trust, and helping people for free without ever making it clear how they can work with you more deeply. Whether you're... Someone who has a lot to share but feels weird every time you talk about your offerA coach, creator, teacher, writer, or business owner who loves contributing but avoids sellingA deep feeler who worries that promoting your work makes you look pushy, arrogant, or attention-seekingOr someone who has built trust with your audience but hasn't built a clear bridge to the next step... this episode will help you reframe selling as an act of service, not performance. We're diving into: Why self-promotion can feel so gross for sensitive, thoughtful peopleThe difference between contribution and invitationWhy trust isn't the finish line, it's the foundationHow over-giving, people-pleasing, and imposter syndrome can make selling feel emotionalWhy your free content may be building trust, but not creating a clear path to work with youHow selling can become a simple, grounded invitation instead of a dramatic sales pitchThe difference between performance and leadershipAnd the question every creator and business owner should ask: “If someone loved everything I put out for the next six months, would they actually know how to work with me?”The Energy Xchange is a podcast for highly sensitive people, empaths, INFJs, and deep feelers navigating relationships, business, visibility, and personal growth. Modern Healing Culture (Are We Ever Truly "Healed")?

This week, we're getting honest about the shadow side of healing culture, and what happens when your healing journey starts to look a lot like another achievement project. Whether you're... Someone who can name every wound, pattern, and attachment style but still finds yourself reacting the same wayA perfectionist who's turned self-awareness into self-surveillance, or A deep feeler who's starting to wonder if getting triggered again means you went backwards... this episode will give you both the reframe and the relief you didn't know you needed. We're diving into: Why naming the wound isn't the same as resolving itThe difference between self-awareness and self-surveillanceWhy real healing happens in relationships and conflict, not in the quiet solaceWhat retreats and curated wellness spaces can and can't actually doWhy capacity is a more honest measure of healing than untouchabilityWhat it looks like to be inside an emotion and still feel groundedThe Energy Xchange is a podcast for highly sensitive people (HSPs), empaths, INFJs, and deep feelers navigating relationships, business, and personal growth.
