Why You Trust Yourself at Work—but Second-Guess Everything in Your Relationship

You keep your commitments at work. You make decisions. You deliver. People trust you. So why does all that confidence seem to disappear when your partner is unhappy with a decision you've made? THE SQUEEZE How many promises have you made to yourself in your relationship that you've broken the second your partner didn't like them? THE JUICE Today, I'm showing you how project managers use commitments to build trust—and what that can teach you about rebuilding trust with yourself. Because when a project repeatedly misses its commitments, eventually it doesn't just lose a deadline. It loses credibility. Your relationship with yourself works the same way. In this Project Management mini, we're taking Jack McFen's insight from this week's long-form conversation—when you stop breaking promises to yourself, you start trusting yourself more—and putting it into practice.  We'll look at what happens when you say no and then change it to yes, promise yourself you won't engage in another disrespectful conversation and then engage anyway, or give away the time you said you'd take for yourself because your partner is upset. Your brain is keeping track. It's looking for evidence that your word can be trusted. YOUR MICRODOSE OF COURAGE Make one commitment to yourself small enough that you can actually keep it. Maybe it's: I'm not explaining my no twice. I'm taking the 30 minutes I said I'd take. If this conversation becomes disrespectful, I'm stepping away. Then follow through. Because every time you do, you're giving yourself another piece of evidence that your word can be trusted. And remember: your partner's reaction doesn't automatically cancel your commitment.  KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING If this gave you something to work on this week, join my newsletter through the link in the show notes. That's where we take these conversations deeper—relationships, boundaries, self-trust, and what it actually looks like to choose yourself when someone you love isn't happy about it. Successful at Everything—So Why Are You Losing Yourself in Your Relationship?

What happens when keeping the peace becomes how you measure your worth—and you realize the life you're working so hard to hold together might not even be the life you want? THE JUICE In this episode, you'll discover: How to tell if the success you're chasing is actually yours—or just something you've been taught to want. The cost you pay every time you people-please and make keeping everyone else happy your responsibility. What happens to your relationship with yourself when you stop trusting your own decisions.I sat down with Jack McFen, host of Average Jacks, for a conversation that started with one big question: What the hell does success even mean? We talk about external validation, comparison, failure, people-pleasing, boundaries, non-negotiables, and what happens when you've become so good at showing up for everyone else that you stop showing up for yourself. Because you can be successful as hell and still measure your worth by how happy everyone around you is—especially in your relationships. And maybe success isn't keeping everybody happy. Maybe it's trusting yourself even when they're unhappy. YOUR MICRODOSE OF COURAGE Keep one promise to yourself—even if someone you love doesn't like it. Maybe it's a no you've been afraid to say. A boundary you keep negotiating. Or a decision you already know is right for you. One promise. Keep it. You don't rebuild self-trust by getting everyone else to agree with you. You rebuild it by showing yourself: I can trust me, even when they're unhappy. ABOUT JACK Jack McFen is the host of Average Jacks, a podcast built around real people, real growth, and redefining what success actually looks like for the everyday person. Jack and I get into the messy middle of ambition, fulfillment, comparison, relationships, and learning to recognize the small wins that actually build a life. Can You Let Them Be Mad? The Yoga of Letting Go For Your Relationship

What if the thing exhausting you in your relationship isn't just the conflict? What if it's your grip on how the conflict needs to end? I need them to understand me. I need them to stop being mad. I need them to agree. I need this tension to go away. I need us to be okay again so I can finally be okay. That grip is where yoga enters the conversation. In this FitZen yoga mini, we're taking the yogic principle of aparigraha—or non-grasping—and applying it to our relationships. Because sometimes you're not grasping onto the person. You're grasping onto the outcome. And yoga isn't just what happens when your body is in a pose. Sometimes yoga happens in the moment your entire body screams: Fix it. Explain. Text again. Apologize. Make them understand. Make this feeling go away. And instead—you stay. THE 3 JUICE SQUEEZES 🍊 1. You may be grasping for an outcome, not a person. Their approval. Their reassurance. Their agreement. For the conversation to end well. For them to stop being disappointed. For everything to feel okay again so you can finally feel okay. Recognizing the grasp is the first part of the practice. 2. Non-grasping doesn't mean you stop caring. Aparigraha isn't about becoming cold, detached, or indifferent. It's learning to loosen your grip on controlling another person's response so you can remain connected to yourself. Their reaction belongs to them. Your integrity belongs to you. 3. The moment you want to fix it IS the yoga. Can you say what's true for you without trying to control what happens after you say it? Can you notice the urge to explain, apologize, text again, or make everything okay—and stay? Take a breath. Feel your feet. Notice what's happening in your body. And remind yourself: I can feel this and still stay with myself. YOUR MICRODOSE OF COURAGE 🍊 The next time you feel the urge to fix someone's reaction to you, don't immediately act. Give yourself one breath. Feel your feet on the ground. Inhale. Exhale. Then ask: What am I grasping for right now? Their approval? Reassurance? Agreement? An apology? For the tension to disappear? Then remind yourself: I can want that without making my peace dependent on getting it. That's the practice. Not perfect detachment. Not never people-pleasing again. One tiny moment where you notice the grasp and loosen your grip. Because coming home to yourself doesn't always require some massive courageous decision. Sometimes it's one tiny Microdose of Courage where you choose not to abandon yourself just because somebody else is uncomfortable. Alignment is the new hustle because you are your most important project. Support the show Sign up for the FitZen Newsletter! Doing All the Work in Your Relationship? RACI That Shit.

Are you doing all the emotional work in your relationship—and calling it partnership? You remember everything. Initiate the hard conversations. Repair the fights. Manage the tension. Keep track of what needs to happen. Anticipate problems before they become problems. And somehow, when someone else drops the ball, you’re the one figuring out how to pick it back up. No wonder you're exhausted. In the last episode, we asked the uncomfortable question: What would happen to your relationship if you stopped holding it together? Now we're taking that question one step further—and we're bringing in project management. Because when ownership is unclear on a project, work gets missed, duplicated, or quietly picked up by the most competent person in the room. Sound familiar? In this FitZen Project mini, I'm taking one of my favorite project management tools—the RACI matrix—and using it to help you figure out what you're actually responsible for in your relationship…and what was never yours to carry in the first place. THE 3 JUICE SQUEEZES 🍊 1. Caring about someone doesn't make you responsible for their work. Their emotions. Their responsibilities. Their relationship with the kids. Their consequences. You can deeply care about someone without automatically assigning yourself ownership of whatever they're struggling with. 2. Somebody else's “R” may have quietly ended up on your project plan. RACI separates who is Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed. If you're somehow all four for damn near everything in your relationship, that's not shared ownership. That's a really s****y resource allocation plan. 3. Before you set another boundary, get clear on ownership. Ask: What's mine? What's theirs? What actually belongs to both of us? Then ask the harder question: What have I assigned myself ownership of simply because I'm afraid of what will happen if I don't? YOUR MICRODOSE OF COURAGE Pick one thing you've been carrying in your relationship and RACI that shit. Write it down: Who is Responsible? Who is Accountable? Where should you only be Consulted? Where do you simply need to be Informed? Then notice where you've quietly promoted yourself to project manager of somebody else's shit. Don't blow anything up. Don't dramatically announce your resignation. Just notice. And this week, practice handing one piece of ownership back to the person it actually belongs to. Because you are your most important project. But you were never meant to be the project manager of someone else's life. Alignment is the new hustle. What Happens to Your Relationship When You Stop Holding It Together?

What if the only reason your relationship is “okay” is because you’re working overtime to keep it that way? You bring up the hard conversations. You choose your words carefully. You apologize first. You smooth over the tension. You explain yourself 47 different ways. You anticipate their moods, lower your expectations, and fix problems before they ever have to experience the consequences. And you’re f*****g exhausted. But stopping feels terrifying—because what happens to the relationship if you’re no longer the one holding it together? In this episode of The FitZen Project, we’re getting into why high-functioning women can become so damn good at managing their relationships that they don’t realize how much of the relationship they’re actually carrying. THE 3 JUICE SQUEEZES 🍊 1. Keeping the peace may have started as protection. Being able to read the room, anticipate someone’s mood, and adjust accordingly can become a powerful skill. But when your ability to feel okay depends on everyone else being okay with you, peace starts looking a whole lot more like survival. 2. Protection eventually becomes management. You may not be trying to control your partner—you may be trying to control how much discomfort you have to experience. If you can get them to stop being angry, understand your point, forgive you, or make the tension disappear, then finally… you can relax. The problem? Now your peace depends on someone else’s emotional state. 3. The real work is learning you can handle what happens when you stop. Holding the boundary isn’t always the hardest part. Sitting in the silence, disappointment, anger, tension, or uncertainty afterward might be. This is where self-trust gets built: I can feel this and still stay with myself. And when you stop doing the work of two people, you finally get honest information about the relationship you’re actually in. YOUR MICRODOSE OF COURAGE Ask yourself: What am I doing to keep the peace in my relationship that I’m absolutely exhausted from doing? And then: What am I afraid might happen if I stopped? You don’t have to fix it today. You don’t have to make a massive decision. Just stop protecting yourself from the information. Because you can’t get clear on the relationship you truly desire while using all your energy trying to keep the relationship you currently have from falling apart. Alignment is the new hustle. And you are your most important project. How to Break Old Patterns and Actually Change Your Life

You know which pattern needs to change. You know the people-pleasing is making you resentful. You know perfectionism is keeping you stuck. You know being the strong one has made it nearly impossible to ask for help. So why do you keep repeating it? Awareness is powerful—but recognizing an old survival pattern does not automatically change the way you live. In this FitZen Mini, Rachel takes Christopher Wesley’s work on survival scripts and applies integrated change control from project management to help you break old patterns without burning your entire life down. Because not everything about your current identity needs to be demolished. Some qualities still serve you. Some need a healthier expression. And some have completed their assignment and are ready to be released. Through this identity change request, you’ll learn how to:  Identify the real cost of leaving an old pattern unchanged  Anticipate how changing it may affect your relationships, routines, and responsibilities  Decide what parts of your current identity you want to keep, modify, and release  Choose one visible action that proves the change has begun  Create a specific owner and deadline for the change—because insight without action is just paperwork You don’t need to wait until everyone understands. You don’t need to feel completely confident. And you definitely don’t need to launch a hostile takeover of your entire identity. You only need to choose one pattern and take one courageous action within the next seven days. Listen now to move beyond understanding your survival patterns and begin changing the way they operate in your life. This is the final installment of the Christopher Wesley series:  Christopher helped us understand why the old identity formed.  Svadhyaya helped us hear the script without automatically obeying it.  This identity change request helps us move from awareness into action. Because you can appreciate how a pattern once protected you without giving it a lifetime contract. How to Stop People-Pleasing, Perfecting, and Overfunctioning| A Guided Self-Study Practice

You keep calling it your personality: “I’m just a perfectionist.” “I’ve always been the responsible one.” “I’m not good at asking for help.” But what if people-pleasing, perfecting, and overfunctioning aren’t simply who you are? What if they’re survival patterns you learned when you needed to feel safe, accepted, or in control? In this guided FitZen Mini, Rachel uses svadhyaya—the yogic practice of self-study—to help you recognize the protective voice influencing your decisions and create space to choose differently. Through this practice, you’ll learn how to: Recognize when an old survival script is making decisions for youUnderstand what your people-pleasing, perfectionism, or overfunctioning is trying to protect you fromPause before automatically obeying the pattern and choose what you actually need nowYou don’t have to silence the voice, shame the pattern, or reinvent your entire life today. You only need to notice when the script starts talking—and remember that hearing it doesn’t mean you have to obey it. Listen now and discover the difference between who you are and who you learned to be. This mini supports Rachel’s full conversation with Christopher J. Wesley about identity, imagination, and rewriting the survival scripts that quietly shape our lives. Because the voice that protected you once doesn’t automatically get the final vote now. You Built a Successful Life—So Why Doesn’t It Feel Like Yours? | Christopher Wesley

You built a successful life—so why doesn’t it feel like yours? You’re capable, responsible, and probably the person everyone relies on. Your life may even look exactly how you once hoped it would. But underneath all that success, you don’t feel like yourself anymore. You may feel disconnected from what you want, exhausted by the role you’re always expected to play, or strangely unfulfilled by a life that looks perfectly fine on paper. In this episode, Christopher Wesley reveals the unexpected reason you can be successful but unfulfilled: the same qualities that helped you succeed may have begun as survival scripts. Perfectionism may have helped you earn approval. People-pleasing may have made you dependable. Staying five steps ahead may have protected you from failure, embarrassment, or rejection. These patterns aren’t necessarily bad—but they may still be making decisions for a version of you who no longer needs their protection. Listen now to discover: • How to recognize when an old survival script is controlling your choices • Why positive thinking cannot overpower a voice that believes it is protecting you • How to separate who you truly are from who you learned you needed to be • Why remembering yourself must come before reinventing yourself • How to keep the powerful qualities behind your success without letting them continue to run your life By the end of this episode, you’ll be able to: Identify the protective pattern keeping you stuck—even if it looks like a successful personality trait.Create enough space between the voice in your head and your next decision so you can respond intentionally instead of automatically.Begin finding yourself again without destroying the life, relationships, or strengths you still want to keep.Christopher offers a powerful alternative to fighting your inner voice: understand what it is trying to protect you from, recognize how it once served you, and tell it: “You’re off shift. I don’t need you right now.” If you’ve been thinking, “I don’t feel like myself anymore,” press play now. This conversation will help you understand why—and show you where to begin reclaiming a life that actually feels like yours. This is the first part of a three-episode FitZen series. The next FitZen Mini uses svadhyaya, the yogic practice of self-study, to help you recognize an old script without automatically obeying it. The final mini uses integrated change control from project management to help you decide what stays, what changes, what goes, and what courageous action comes next. Because alignment is the new hustle—and you are your most important project. Content note: This episode includes discussion of childhood abuse, suicidal ideation, grief, and loss.
