During this episode, they also discuss the value of implementing a mentoring program and how mentorship can improve your agency and the fire service one member at a time. Captain/Paramedic Terrence Manley is a 10-year veteran of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, currently assigned to Fire Station 41 in North Highlands, California. Captain Manley has a B.S. degree in Fire Administration, an A.S. degree in Fire Science, and an A.S. degree in Paramedic Science. Throughout his time with Metro Fire, Captain Manley has served the agency in a number of positions: as a fire academy Drill Instructor, Mentor Program Coordinator, Recruitment Team Chair, Fire Behavior Cadre member, and as a Paramedic Preceptor. Captain Manley has also served on interview panels for the rank of Fire Reserve, Single role Paramedic, Single Role EMT, Firefighter/EMT, and Firefighter/Paramedic for Metro Fire as well as for other agencies in surrounding areas. In 2014, Captain Manley's passion for helping others inspired him to start a Mentor Program within Metro Fire, with a mission to inspire and motivate those persons interested in careers within the fire service. Before joining the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, Terrence worked as an Ambulance Operator with the Glendale Fire Department, and as an Auxiliary Firefighter with the Sierra Madre Fire Department in Los Angeles County. He was fortunate enough to have a family friend who worked with the Los Angeles City Fire Department mentor him throughout his career journey into the fire service.     Join Host Chris Baker and guest Fire Captain (Retired) Julie Rider, Recruitment Coordinator for the Cosumnes Fire Department as they discuss the Sacramento Regional Fire Services Diversity Committee and how the Cosumnes Fire Department provides opportunities and strategies for recruiting women into the fire service. During this episode, they also discuss the recruitment for the Cosumnes Fire Department and an overview of the entry-level fire recruit hiring process. Captain Julie Rider began her fire service career as a fire intern through the Cosumnes River College Fire Intern Program in 1997. She previously worked as a paralegal for an attorney while attending college until she was hired as a Firefighter/EMT with the Elk Grove Fire Department in 1999. Captain Rider has 23 years of experience in the fire service. During her tenure, she has mentored, taught, and inspired fellow firefighters, interns, and recruits and is committed to finding new innovative ways to connect the community with the Cosumnes Fire Department. Captain Rider is currently assigned to the EMS Division as a day-shift EMS Captain. In addition to the EMS-related programs, Captain Rider is also engaged in several department programs; for example, she created a marketing team after the consolidation of the Cosumnes Fire Department and implemented the Cosumnes Fire's Citizen Fire Academy. She is an active member of the Cosumnes Fire Department peer support team (and regional peer support); a Fire Academy PT instructor; a social media administrator; a committee member for Regional Diversity & Recruitment; a Safety Committee member and a member of Golden State Women in the Fire Service. Captain Rider has spent her entire career with a focused purpose on outreach and recruitment and has helped many future firefighters navigate a path into the fire service. During this episode, they also discuss the Metro Fire Mentor Program and how it influences and assists the next generation of Metro Firefighters through the hiring process. Firefighter Paramedic Tim White, Recruitment Coordinator, is a veteran of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, with more than 17 years of experience. He enjoys being in the hands of the company as a firefighter and as a paramedic. Firefighter Paramedic White has been assigned to one of Metro Fire truck companies for the past ten years and he considers it the best job in the fire service. He joined Metro Fire TEMS as a tactical paramedic in 2007 and currently serves as Team Leader. As a TEMS team member, Tim has had the opportunity to work with multiple SWAT teams and he considers that experience a privilege. He has also trained for REM team assignments and is a member of Metro Fire's UAV program. Before joining the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, Tim worked as a paramedic with AMR in Contra Costa County for two years. He also has prior experience working in the trades as a sheet metal worker. Tim was fortunate to have a family friend who worked for the City of San Jose Fire Department and shared pursuing the fire service as a career in 1999. Rick Lasky, a 40-year veteran of the fire service, served as chief of the Lewisville (TX) Fire Department for 12 years, prior to that as Fire Chief in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. Most recently, he was interim Chief for the Trophy Club (TX) Fire Department. Rick followed in his father's footsteps beginning his career as a firefighter in the suburbs on the southwest side of Chicago and has been a line firefighter-paramedic, company grade officer, training officer, and command-level officer. Rick is a long-standing editorial advisory board member for Fire Engineering Magazine and as an author has written over 200 technical articles that have been published in national fire-rescue journals. He is the author of the best-selling books "Pride and Ownership-A Firefighter's Love of the Job" and "Five Alarm Leadership: From the Firehouse to the Fireground" published by PennWell Books and is the co-host for the radio show "The Command Post" heard on Fire Engineering Talk Radio. Rick has also served as a police officer and was wounded on several occasions, once while defending a victim of family violence, and has received numerous fire and police awards and commendations. Rick holds an AAS Degree in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University and was selected as the CSU 2012 Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) Outstanding Graduate. He was also honored in 2011 as an inductee into the Chicago Softball Hall of Fame. He is a Lewisville Honorary Police Officer and Honorary Battalion Commander in the 18th Battalion of the FDNY. In 2017, he was the recipient of the Tom Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award. Rick lectures at the local, state, national, and international levels and is a sought-after speaker by both the public and private sectors. A very popular speaker on a variety of leadership topics, he has been requested by several businesses and corporations to deliver his inspiring and meaningful leadership development programs. He is married to his best friend Jami and they have two children, Rick, an FMF Navy Corpsman, and Emily, an outstanding college fastpitch softball player. They also discuss educational opportunities at the National Fire Academy and why you want to be here on the National Emergency Training Center campus. Tonya Hoover is the deputy U.S. fire administrator at the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). She was named to this position in January 2020. As the senior career federal fire official, she is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the USFA. This includes the annual training of over 100,000 first responders at and through the National Fire Academy (NFA); the National Fire Incident Reporting System, which documents and analyzes 27 million fire department emergency responses a year; the USFA's fire prevention, public information and public education programs; and the 26 campus buildings and the grounds of the historic National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Chief Hoover is an accomplished executive with more than 20 years of management experience in both local and state government. She has successfully worked at high levels of government in developing and implementing fire protection, fire prevention, fire training and community risk reduction programs. From May 2017 to January 2020, Chief Hoover served as the superintendent of the USFA's NFA, which focuses on enhancing the ability of fire and emergency services and allied professionals to deal more effectively with fire and related emergencies. From July 2009 to July 2016, Chief Hoover served as the California state fire marshal, where she was responsible for statewide fire prevention, fire service training, pipeline safety, code and regulations development, and analysis and implementation. She was the California Assistant State Fire Marshal from September 2007 to June 2009. Previously, Chief Hoover served as a fire marshal/battalion chief for a local fire department and was a deputy campus fire marshal for the University of California at Berkeley. Chief Hoover served on the board of directors for the National Fire Protection Association and the International Fire Service Training Association and continues to engage with the International Code Council. Chief Hoover received her MBA in Business and Human Resources from the University of Phoenix in 2006 and a Bachelor of Science in Technical Education, specializing in Fire Protection and Safety, from Oklahoma State University in 1985. She holds an associate degree in Fire Protection Engineering Technology (also from Oklahoma State University) and possesses a California lifetime teaching credential for fire science.
