After laying the groundwork with the three pillars of sustainability (People, Planet, Profit), we’re taking the next step and exploring one of the most important shifts needed to deliver sustainability in practice: moving from a linear economy to a circular economy and what that means for the built environment.The crux of this episode is where we break down the difference between the two models. We define a linear system (take–make–waste), explain why it has become the default, and unpack the hidden costs it creates across materials, energy, waste, and emissions. Then we introduce the circular economy, where resources are kept in use for longer through strategies like designing for durability, reuse, repair, disassembly, and material recovery.We also apply these ideas directly to building and construction an industry where choices about design, procurement, and end-of-life planning can lock in impacts for decades.
