    Is your business the most resilient it can be? Plan for it!

    It’s quite easy in primary production to get carried away with the day-to-day jobs. The water runs, the planting, the weaning. You are also at the mercy of the unknown — the markets and the weather to name but a few. The Commonwealth and State-funded Farm Business Resilience Program aims to get producers to work on their business and not just in it; implementing ideas and strategies to counteract challenges in the paddock on the hip pocket. Natalie Hughes is the Program Lead for their delivery of the initiative and is not just a grazier and farmer herself, but an experienced rural financial councillor.     Doug Cross is securing a supply chain sustainably

    There’s a few remarkable people in the world that can see a business opportunity and not only make it a reality, but continue to grow it in a sustainable and imaginative way. There’s fewer again that can take other people on the journey with them and allow subsequent businesses to develop and improve. Cross Meats is a boutique butcher shop in Atherton on the Tablelands west of Cairns in the Queensland’s Far North. It’s the brain child of Doug Cross and is one of those shops that make you salivate as soon as you enter the doors. It specialises in high quality locally produced meat that has been more difficult to source than Doug first imagined, which is why he’s working closely with producers and industry experts to encourage better land management systems from his suppliers.  In this conversation we’ll not only hear from Doug, but another local tablelands grazier and Cross Meats supplier, Cam Whiting, and Bernie English — an esteemed pasture specialist with the Queensland DPI.   Futurebeef is a collaborative project for the northern Australia beef industry and partners include the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, the Northern Territory Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Western Australia and Meat & Livestock Australia. The boys mentioned working with the Malanda Beef Plan group in the Atherton Tablelands and through a subgroup have successfully applied for peer-to-peer funding to support the adoption of legumes, creating the Tablelands Improved Pasture Peer Learning Environment (TIPPLE). The TIPPLE project is proudly funded by the Integrated Engagement and Capacity Building project under the Queensland Government’s Queensland Reef Water Quality Program and is supported by the Mareeba Department of Primary Industries pastures team and project.

    Sowing the (good) seed on the Atherton Tablelands

    Casting your eye across the lush green landscape of Queensland’s Atherton Tablelands it’s easy to think nutrition isn’t an issue. However after decades of farming production across a number of industries, some of the pastures are found wanting. Victor Maccoroni purchased a block near Ravenshoe to dip his toe back into grazing after a career off farm.     Putting a Price on a P deficiency

    The Price family have been grazing cattle in Central Queensland for decades, but when they purchased a coastal block in 2021, the lurid green of the lush looking pasture masked a severe phosphorus, or P, deficiency they hadn’t encountered at their inland properties. Since starting a supplementation program, the Prices have seen increases in their weaning rates, body condition scores and ultimately their profit margin. But for this forward thinking family, there’s always room for improvement, so the next logical step was a P fertiliser. So how would that work? At what cost to the business and how has it gone? Jayne Cuddihy sat down with Rob Price and his sister Maddie Price, and Kylie Hopkins, a senior beef extension officer at the Queensland DPI, to mull over their results.     Prioritising pasture performance

    Taking on any type of renovation project can be an eyewatering experience — so thankfully when it comes to your pasture there’s plenty of help at hand. When third generation Central Queensland grazier Warren Luhrs noticed his pastures weren’t performing like they used to, he took matters into his own hands, turning to the Queensland Department of Primary Industries' Stuart Buck to get things back on track. What followed has been an extraordinary turnaround of his production and business, but also a valuable study of pasture varieties.
