The GMs Guide shed light on the dark art of good game design

I am obsessed with this podcast. I am relatively new to dnd and the art of dungeonmatering and for a long time, I struggled with trying to understand what makes a good dnd session? What is it about some games that make me feel excited and engaged, while in others I feel like I am counting down the minutes? As a DM (or GM), how do I plan and execute a story for my players without feeling like I have to memorize 100s of pages of content?

I looked up resources online, read blogs, bought books, and sure I got a few good tips here and there, but I couldn't really build on what I learned because I didn't understand the psychology of storytelling and the psychology behind RPGing in general.

As host of The GM's Guide, Dan does an exceptional job in explaining these things. He takes you on a tour of his past adventures and provides a deep dive on topics, like how to make combat less repetitive and more exciting, 4-act structure, and how to make memorable villans.

The one note I have, is that his early episodes are a bit raw and rough, and I would have preferred if he would have taken the time to do a little editing. However, if you can look past that somewhat frustrating detail you will find that Dan is an engaging host that invites you into his world to tell you about the one thing he clearly loves, which is elements of good game design.
