Powering the Future: The FACTS About the Robena Data Center | Episode #25

In this episode, hosts Shelly Brown and TR Mahle sit down with former Greene County Commissioner and retired military veteran Mike Belding to clear the air regarding one of the most talked-about topics in our community currently: the proposed Robena Data Center. The historic Robena Coal Mine site is entering a new chapter under the ownership of International Electric Power, and with that change comes many questions. Mike joins us to separate social media misconceptions from the documented facts, emphasizing that even in a changing world, "the facts still matter." In this episode, we discuss: The "Bring Your Own Power" Model: Discover how the center plans to generate its own electricity using natural gas, ensuring that local residents won't see an increase in their utility bills or a strain on the local grid. Water & Environment: Mike breaks down the data on resource usage, including the fact that the center’s daily consumption represents only about one minute’s worth of the nearby river's flow. Community Concerns: We have an honest conversation about noise and light pollution, property values, and the legitimate concerns of neighbors in an area with no township zoning. Economic Opportunity: The potential for 100 to 200 long-term, family-sustaining jobs right here in Greene County. A Call to Action: Why "out of the box" thinking is required for our county to thrive, and how residents can form committees to ensure their voices are heard as this project moves forward. Government’s Role in Business & Industry Development | Episode #23

In this episode of The GreeneScene Podcast, our hosts Shelly Brown and Dolly Throckmorton are joined by a familiar face in Greene County, Mike Belding. As a former County Commissioner and proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Mike brings a wealth of experience to a topic that has been buzzing around our kitchen tables and social media feeds lately: the role of local government in business and industry development. Inspired by Mike’s latest "Towne Square" article in the GreeneScene Magazine, we’re pulling back the curtain on how new businesses (like the recent car wash and the proposed data center) actually make their way into our community. We dive deep into the misconceptions often found online and discuss the "guardrails" that guide our Planning Commission.  In this episode, we explore: The Reality of Growth: Why commissioners don’t "pick and choose" the businesses that come to town. The Zoning Conversation: A look back at the 2021 zoning rejection and what it means for property owners today. Behind the Scenes: Demystifying NDAs (Non-Disclosure Agreements) and how Tax Abatements really work to build a stronger taxable future for our county. Being Good Neighbors: The importance of communication between new industries and the community. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a local business owner, this conversation about the balance between private property rights and the collective needs of Greene County is one you don't want to miss. Warrior Trail Gobblers: Shaping Future Conservationists & Hunters | Episode #21

On this episode of The GreeneScene Podcast, hosts Shelly Brown and TR Mahle sit down with Guy Hostutler, president of the Warrior Trail Gobblers chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), to talk about conservation, community, and cultivating the next generation of outdoorsmen and women. Guy shares how the NWTF got its start in Greene County back in the 1990s, a time when turkey populations were low, and how dedicated conservation efforts helped bring them back. From planting food plots to creating and maintaining proper habitats, the organization’s mission goes far beyond hunting. It’s about stewardship. You’ll hear about the annual “Jakes Event,” held before Pennsylvania’s main turkey season, where young hunters learn ethical practices, how to build turkey calls, and how to respect wildlife and their habitats. (Fun fact: young male turkeys are called “Jakes,” and young females are “Jennys!”) The conversation also touches on the powerful friendships formed through NWTF programs, the importance of conservation education, and Shelly’s personal admiration for turkeys...especially the way they walk! This episode highlights how the NWTF is making a lasting impact right here in Greene County.
