    Lectio Divina: Acts 2:37-41

    Acts 2:37-41 (NIV) When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.     Ordinary People: David

    This morning, Will Dyer continues our summer series by looking at the story of David and Goliath. Rather than seeing this as a story about good versus bad, perhaps God is trying to show us what it means to trust in him. A brief programming note: next week we are having a bring-your-own-picnic event at Chris and Karen's home in Bradford and, as such, there will not be a teaching podcast posted next Sunday. Regularly scheduled programming will resume the following Sunday, August 9th. Please find the slide deck for this week's teaching here. Home Church Questions: 1. What stood out to you from Sunday’s teaching? 2. Read 1 Samuel 17:1-51 (prefereably in different translations). What stands out to you from this passage? 3. Have you ever had to rely on God’s wisdom? Do you think you could have the level of trust that David had in this story? 4. There are 150 Psalms. Consider the following reading plan: if you read three psalms per day starting today, you would read the entire book and finish by the first Sunday after Labour Day (which will be when we commence our next sermon series). If that seems like too much, consider reading any number of Psalms that you select. As you read these texts, leave time to reflect on their deeper meanings and to pray through them.     Romans 13:8-10 (NIV) Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbour.     1 Corinthians 1:18-21 (NLT) The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise     and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.” So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish.     Today, we welcomed guest speaker Carol O'Neil to begin our summer series on ordinary people experiencing God's extraordinary grace by sharing about the life of Joseph. Faith is a long obedience in the same direction, so how should we understand our suffering in light of God's promises? There is no slide deck for this week's teaching. Home Church Questions: 1.
