Smarsh is perfect narrator for topic

After having just finished listening to Sarah Smarsh’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Heartland, I was delighted to hear she released a podcast. Her voice, with its Kansan twang, is the perfect backdrop to her investigations in the diversity of rural America. Her intention and thoughtfulness in choosing her guests is apparent, and I appreciate that she is a great listener and let’s her guests explore and teach us.

Brilliant podcast, insightful and honest

This pod is gorgeously done - the guests are interesting, engaging people, and Smarsh’s gift for storytelling - and revealing the connections between people - really comes through as she guides the conversation. It brings rural voices and places to life, even for someone who hasn’t spent much time in rural areas, and demonstrates the vast diversity of experiences in a huge part of the country that many handwave away as “flyover country.” Must listen.

Great host and guests

Smarsh is a really sharp writer and I like her as a host! She asks smart questions and then lets the guests talk without cluttering up the episode with banter, promotions, her own anecdotes. More importantly, the guests have really interesting experiences and projects -- these are people and stories that podcasts typically overlook. I've only heard the first two episodes, looking forward to more.
