    Life Is Hard. You Don't Have to Do it Alone

    What if we’ve confused being strong with not needing anybody? That idea hit me hard this week. A complete stranger reached out after hearing what I’d been going through. He didn’t pretend to understand every part of it. He didn’t have some perfect piece of advice. He just showed up. And that reminded me of something I’m still learning: Life is hard. You don’t have to do it alone. In Episode 5 of The Honest Middle, I talk about why asking for help doesn’t make us weak, how one honest conversation can create a chain reaction, and why sometimes the most powerful thing we can say to another person is simply: “I hear you. I’ve got you. Keep going.” One conversation can change a mood. It can change a relationship. Hell, it might even change the direction of somebody’s life. And if your words can help even one person?     The Clouds Came Back. The Progress Stayed.

    Today was a good day — until the clouds came back. Not as badly as before. Not enough to completely derail me. But enough to make that familiar question creep back in: Was all the progress I've been making actually real? In Episode 4 of The Honest Middle, I talk about what happens when anxiety returns after you've finally started feeling better — and why one rough afternoon doesn't erase the days, weeks, or months of progress that came before it. We talk about learning to ride the waves instead of being pulled under by them, refusing to let one small pebble stop the entire walk, leaning on the people around us, and learning to let a good day simply be a good day. I'm still learning to trust the good days. But I'm starting to trust something else even more: One bad day doesn't get to take all the others away. I'm John Knopick. This is The Honest Middle.     Why I'm Still Afraid to Trust a Good Day

    One rough afternoon can make you question every good day that came before it. In Episode 3 of The Honest Middle, I talk about what happened when the clouds rolled back in after several better days — and how quickly my brain started asking whether the progress I’d made was real. I look back at how different these difficult moments feel compared with where I was a month ago, why anxiety doesn’t give us a warning before it shows up, and what I’m learning about not letting one bad stretch rewrite the entire story. Maybe trusting a good day doesn’t mean believing nothing difficult will happen again. Maybe it means trusting that when a hard moment comes, it doesn’t get to take every good moment away with it. I also talk about the community starting to grow around The Honest Middle, the stories people have already begun sharing, and why I want this show to become a place where people can speak honestly about what they’re carrying. I’m not a therapist or an expert. I’m still living through this and figuring it out in real time. I don’t completely trust the good days yet. But I’m starting to trust myself more than I did a few weeks ago. We’ll keep figuring it out together.

    Maybe Progress is Quieter Than I Thought

    Maybe progress isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it’s realizing you forgot to be afraid. In Episode 2 of The Honest Middle, I talk about how difficult evenings had become, why nighttime started carrying so much anxiety, and what I expected medication and recovery to feel like. I also talk about the smaller signs of progress I’m beginning to notice — getting through a day without constantly waiting for the next wave, enjoying time with my family, and letting myself have a good night without immediately worrying about whether it will last. This isn’t therapy or medical advice. I’m just sharing what this process feels like from inside it. If you’ve dealt with anxiety, fear, setbacks, or those stretches where your mind seems to take over everything, I’d genuinely like to hear how you get through the waves. We’ll keep figuring it out together.

    I Thought the Medicine Was Supposed to Protect Me

    In the first episode of The Honest Middle, I talk honestly about what happened when one difficult afternoon made me question whether the progress I had felt was real. After beginning a new medication regimen and finally experiencing some calm, I quietly started expecting it to protect me from ever feeling hopeless or overwhelmed again. When those feelings returned, even briefly, I felt betrayed—not just by the bad day, but by what I thought it meant. This episode is about medication expectations, sleep anxiety, setbacks, and the realization that one bad day does not erase better days. I’m not speaking as a therapist or someone who has everything figured out. I’m speaking from inside the struggle, hoping somebody listening feels a little less alone. The Honest Middle is where we talk about real life while we’re still living through it.
