The passion, the determination and the quality of the performance gave the country something to smile about. Credit where it's due—this team deserves our congratulations. But while we celebrate England's success, should we also be asking whether politicians are trying to ride that wave of national optimism? Andy Burnham is presenting himself as the man to lead Britain after Keir Starmer, yet he has never been elected Prime Minister and has not asked the British people for a mandate. We still know remarkably little about the policies he would introduce or the direction he wants to take the country. Reports and political speculation continue over major issues, including Britain's future relationship with the Chagos Islands, proposals affecting political donations, and Labour's increasingly aggressive attacks on Nigel Farage and Reform UK. There should always be proper investigations where necessary—but should politicians and sections of the media act as judge and jury before the facts are established? Burnham is also talking about eye-catching ideas such as allowing drinking on football terraces and presenting himself as the optimistic alternative to Starmer. Is this genuine leadership with a clear programme, or is it political theatre designed to win hearts before answering the difficult questions? Tonight I'll celebrate England's fantastic victory—but I'll also ask whether we're being distracted from far bigger constitutional and political issues. Should Britain be accepting a new Prime Minister without a General Election? Has Andy Burnham earned the right to lead the country? And are we getting substance—or simply bread and circuses?
