Ep 199 - The Sin Nobody Confesses...And Why It's Destroying Catholic Men

There's a sin that has been attacking men since he was created. It doesn't look like sin. It doesn't feel like sin. But if you let it take root, it will quietly hollow out your faith...and you won't even see it coming. The average American prayer lasts one to two minutes. Men who say they're in a war for their soul, their marriage, their kids. Giving God two minutes. That's not just a busy schedule. That's something darker. And today we're naming it. The Desert Fathers called it acedia and the early Church considered it one of the most spiritually dangerous attacks a man could face. St. Thomas Aquinas listed it among the seven deadly sins. And it is the signature attack on Catholic men right now. It looks like contentment. It looks like, I show up to Mass on Sunday, I check the box, I'm a good provider. Isn't that enough? That is sloth. That is acedia. And chances are, you've never once confessed it. In this episode, James breaks down what acedia actually is, why the saints and Desert Fathers feared it above almost everything else, how to recognize it in your own life right now, and what to do about it starting this week. 3 Powerful Quotes from This Episode: "Sloth is not about being lazy. It's about being unwilling to pay the cost of the fight.""Acedia is not a relaxation of effort, but a refusal of joy — because the joy that God offers is not cheap. It comes through the cross.""The man who goes into battle with a clear conscience and a clean soul is a different animal entirely from the man carrying the weight of unconfessed sin and unexamined drift." Key Takeaway — Apply This Immediately: Identify one area of your life where you've been sitting on the stairs — your prayer life, your marriage, your kids, your own soul. This week, show up there on purpose. Five minutes. Eyes closed. No apps. Tell God exactly where you've been frozen. Then go to confession before the month is out. Fr. Dom's Homs - My Lord and My God: How the Resurrection Changes Everything for Men

The tomb is empty. The wounds are real. And Christ is standing right in front of you...what are you going to do about it? Fr. Dominic breaks open the Second Sunday of Easter and delivers a message that every Catholic man needs to hear. This isn't a feel-good Easter recap. This is a challenge to stop sitting on the sidelines of your faith and start living like the resurrection actually happened. Fr. Dom walks through Acts of the Apostles and shows us what the early Church looked like in real time — men who were warned, reprimanded, flogged, and came back praising God. Peter, who denied Christ at His darkest hour, was now preaching fire in front of the same people who handed Jesus over to be crucified. We also dig into the Shroud of Turin. 700+ documented wounds. Over a third of His blood lost before He even reached the cross. A burst of 30 trillion watts of ultraviolet light energy for 1/40 billionth of a second that burned the image of Christ into linen. And then there's Thomas. Doubting Thomas didn't just wonder; he demanded proof, and Christ gave it to him. But here's the challenge Fr. Dom lays out: Thomas had to touch the wounds of Christ. We get to receive Him every single time we approach the altar. Are we treating the Eucharist like that? Are we saying, "My Lord and my God"? I'm issuing you a direct challenge in this episode: pick up Luke and then Acts of the Apostles, read them straight through, and find the sacraments hiding in the text. They're all there. Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation, the Eucharist — the early Church was living what we still have access to today. There is gold in them there hills. Go find it. The enemy doesn't rest. Neither can we. 💬 3 POWERFUL QUOTES FROM THE TRANSCRIPT: "Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, whose sins you retain are retained — and that very same gift through Jesus happens in these confessionals." — Fr. Dominic"Faith is more precious than gold — more precious than anything this world can offer." — Fr. Dominic, echoing St. Peter"We do more than touch Him. We consume Him. Let us say, 'My Lord and my God.'" — Fr. Dominic KEY TAKEAWAY — IMPLEMENT THIS WEEK: Go to Confession. Don't wait. Don't negotiate with yourself about whether you need it. The same risen Christ who breathed on the apostles and said "Whose sins you forgive are forgiven" is waiting for you in that confessional. Walk in. Walk out clean. Then receive the Eucharist the way Thomas touched those wounds — with full conviction and full surrender. Ep 198 - Drama-Free Discipline: The Truth About Raising Kids Nobody Wants to Hear

Your kids aren't the problem. Your discipline strategy might be. Dr. Ray Guarendi — psychologist, father of 10 adopted children, and one of the most respected voices in Catholic family life — returns to The Manly Catholic to cut through the noise on one of the most frustrating challenges fathers face: discipline that actually works. We dig into his book Drama-Free Discipline, and Dr. Ray pulls no punches. Gentle parenting? It's built on a false premise — that children are naturally cooperative. Spoiler: they're not. And the more you try to reason and explain your way into their cooperation, the faster you become the most frustrated person in the room. In this episode: Why gentle parenting produces some of the most frantic and inconsistent parents Dr. Ray has ever seenThe "blackout" method — what it is, why it works, and how a 7-year-old usually folds in under an hourSpanking — what the actual research says vs. what the culture tells youWhy you lose authority every time you over-explain, and what to say insteadHow fathers should step in when mom and child are going back and forth — and why most dads wait too longWhat to do when you blow up, go too far, and need to walk it back without losing credibility Dr. Ray's closing words alone are worth the whole episode — don't skip the ending. 3 POWERFUL QUOTES: "Discipline without love may be harsh. Love without discipline is child abuse — because ultimately, the world will crush that child." — Dr. Ray Guarendi "If you have authority, you don't have to use it very often. If you don't have it, you're always chasing some form of it." — Dr. Ray Guarendi "You're the kindest, most gentle, loving teacher that child will ever have. If you don't do it now, the world will." — Dr. Ray Guarendi KEY TAKEAWAY — APPLY THIS TODAY: Stop over-explaining. When your child misbehaves, give the consequence once, clearly, calmly. If they refuse — go straight to blackout. Strip every perk and privilege until they comply. The consequence doesn't have to be creative. Your follow-through does. Ep 197 - The War You Cannot Lose: Breaking Free from Porn for Good with The Freedom Group

Most men trying to break free from pornography have already tried something and it didn't stick. That's not a character flaw. There is a missing framework. In this episode, I speak with Joe Masek and Nick Redd, co-founders of The Freedom Group, two men who spent a combined 23+ years in the grip of pornography before finding lasting freedom and then built a proven system to guarantee it for other men in a year or less. This is one of the most important conversations I've had on this show. Joe and Nick break down exactly why most programs fail: they either go all-spiritual or all-physical and ignore what the science and the faith both agree on — you are a whole person. And you need a whole-person approach. We get into the neuroscience of addiction, why craving isn't about lust — it's about emotional dysregulation, the danger of identity-labeling ("once an addict, always an addict"), and why Joe believes learning to fight through hard things is what prepared him to watch his son battle brain cancer without crashing. Resources & References Mentioned: The Freedom Group — thefreedomgroup.co (Freedom Groups, Freedom Community, Kingmakers Community)Free Porn Use Assessment — thefreedomgroup.coDan Allender — The Wounded Heart, story work and kingdom frameworkDeath by Comfort — book on the comfort crisis (referenced by Nick) 3 Powerful Quotes: "Pornography has a way of taking a guy out at his knees from ever believing he could achieve anything. So he stops believing and settles into the rut, just trying to manage and get by." "The opposite of addiction isn't sobriety. The opposite of addiction is communion." "Communion is the greatest spiritual warfare. The enemy wants to divide — us from God, from ourselves, from each other, from creation. And righteous living? That's the biggest conviction of my life. The warfare I can participate in is holiness." Key Takeaway: Stop treating your struggles as purely spiritual or purely physical. Pick one thing in each category and stack them: fast today and bring it to prayer. Cold plunge and offer it up. Get sleep and go to confession this week. God made you body and soul — start fighting on both fronts, daily, one willing step at a time. Thank you for your prayers and support! Ep 196 - "The Tomb Is Empty...Now What? The Spiritual Warrior's Final Stand

The question isn't whether the fight is real. The question is: what are you going to do about it? This is the finale of our 7-part Spiritual Warfare series, and we're ending it exactly where it belongs...Holy Week. Because the Resurrection isn't just theology. It's the foundation of everything you do as a Catholic man, a husband, a father, and a warrior for Christ. In this episode, we walk through the roadmap of Holy Week from the Last Supper to the empty tomb and show you exactly what it means for the way you fight, lead, and live. We talk about why so many Catholic men are exhausted and losing. And we lay out the five concrete things you can do right now to move forward into the Easter season as a man of grace, authority, and purpose. We also issue a direct challenge to every man listening: You have a choice to make. You can take the bribe, go back to the comfortable lie that the spiritual battle isn't real. Or you can walk to the empty tomb, look inside, and let it change everything. Your marriage, your children, your faith, your home — all of it is on the line. The tomb is empty. The Victor has risen. He is calling you by name. Will you rise with him? In this episode: Why fighting from victory — not for it — changes everythingThe story of the Japanese soldier who kept fighting for 29 years after the war ended (and why too many Catholic men are doing the same)What Holy Saturday teaches you about trusting God in the silenceThe 5 practical steps to move forward this Easter seasonWhy your authority as a husband and father is real...and how to use it THREE POWERFUL QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE: "The enemy doesn't run from your sophistication. He runs from your holiness." "You don't fight to earn victory. You fight from victory. You fight because there are people who need to hear the news." "Jesus wept. The Son of God, who knows he is about to raise Lazarus from the dead, enters the grief with them. He doesn't skip over the pain to get to the miracle. He stands in the darkness with the people he loves." ONE KEY TAKEAWAY TO IMPLEMENT IMMEDIATELY: Go to confession this week. Not someday. This week. Your armor is restored, your sins are gone, and your access to grace is fully open. Every tactic, every weapon, every spiritual discipline discussed in this series flows from a soul in a state of grace. That's where the fight starts. Thank you for your prayers and support! Ep 195 - Why Some Men Fall and Others Stand: The Authority You’re Ignoring

Why do some men collapse under pressure while others stand firm in the middle of chaos? In this episode of The Manly Catholic, we confront a hard truth most men avoid. The battle is not about motivation, knowledge, or even effort. It is about authority. Welcome to Part-6 of our Spiritual Warfare Series! This episode exposes the real reason men lose ground in spiritual warfare. It is not because the enemy is stronger. It is because men are divided, disordered, and living outside of grace. When a man is not aligned with Christ, he cannot lead, protect, or stand. If you are a husband, father, or man striving for holiness, this is not optional listening. In this episode, you will learn: Why confession is the foundation of spiritual authorityHow sin weakens your leadership in your homeWhat exorcists look for before any deliverance beginsWhy prayer alone is not enough without order and obedienceThe exact reason some men stand while others fall Put your life in order. Return to grace. Take your place as a man under Christ. 3 Powerful Quotes from the Episode: “Most men think the battle is about what they say. The Church teaches it is about what they are.”“Grace does not cooperate with rebellion.”“A man cannot ask God to strengthen him while he refuses to obey Him.” ACT IMMEDIATELY: Go to confession without delay. Stop carrying sin into battle. You cannot stand in authority if you are not in a state of grace. End Show Notes: Thank you for your prayers and support! Ep 194 - Battle on the Homefront: Step Into Your Authority

What if the most important battlefield in spiritual warfare isn’t out there but inside your own home? In Part 5 of this spiritual warfare series, we expose the quiet, relentless attack on the family. Division, distraction, impurity, anger, and spiritual apathy are just some of the ways Satan infilitrates our homes. Divide and conquer. From the Garden of Eden to today, the target has always been the same: the family. And God has already assigned the role of defender. Men, the defender is you... You are not called to dominate, but to protect. Not to control, but to sacrifice. Scripture is clear. The home is a domestic church, and like any church, it must be defended. This episode breaks down: Why the enemy targets your family firstThe spiritual authority given to husbands and fathersHow disorder invites chaos into your homeSimple, practical actions that drive out darknessReal examples from saints and exorcists that prove this battle is real If your home lacks peace, prayer, and order, this episode will show you why—and what to do about it. The question is not whether the battle is happening. The question is whether you are standing your ground. The Challenge: Ask yourself honestly: Am I guarding what God has entrusted to me? Then act. Lead prayer. Establish order. Step into your authority. Start today. Powerful Quotes from the Episode: “Demons go where they are not resisted.”“A man’s role is not control. It is responsibility.”“What we do in the home matters in the spiritual realm.” Products / Resources Mentioned: Mystic Monk CoffeeDeliverance Prayers for Use by the LaityDownload TAN Digital to access the incredible TAN Library! Ep 193 - 6 Open Doors Demons Use Against Men (And How to Close Them Today)

Most Catholic men are preparing for spiritual battle the wrong way. We talk about weapons. Prayer. Sacraments. Devotion. And all of that matters. But what if the enemy is already inside the walls? In Part 4 of this Spiritual Warfare series, we shift the focus from weapons to something many men ignore: the doors we leave open to the enemy. Through negligence, sin, and compromise, men often grant the devil the foothold he needs to attack their souls, their marriages, and their families. This episode breaks down six of the most common entry points demons exploit in the lives of men. These are not abstract theological ideas. These are real doors that many men leave open every day. In this episode we cover: • Why mortal sin is the most direct doorway to demonic influence • How unforgiveness and resentment give demons leverage over your soul • The deep spiritual damage caused by pornography, lust, and sexual disorder • Why spiritual neglect in the home invites chaos into your family • The truth about generational patterns of sin and how men can break them • Why occult practices like tarot cards, Ouija boards, astrology, and energy healing open the door to darkness The enemy cannot remain where grace is chosen decisively. And the moment a man decides to close the doors to sin, confession restores grace and the devil loses his foothold. Your soul, your family, and your mission as a Catholic man depend on it. Products / Resources Mentioned Deliverance Prayers for Use by the Laity – Fr. Chad Ripperger 3 Powerful Quotes From This Episode“Weapons matter in spiritual warfare, but the doors we leave open matter just as much.”“Mortal sin severs grace and hands leverage to Satan and his demons.”“The enemy cannot remain where grace is chosen decisively.” Takeaway for MenDo a serious examination of your life tonight and close one open door to sin immediately. Whether it is mortal sin, pornography, unforgiveness, occult objects, or spiritual disorder in your home. Go to confession, remove the source of temptation, and reclaim authority over your life and your household. Thank you for your prayers and support!
