Food City: Where Hard Work Can Take You

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to interview Food City Athens,AL, Store Manager Andrea Barnes, and I believe you’re going to enjoy her story. Andrea’s journey began as a part-time cashier in Chattanooga. Through years of hard work, dedication, and leadership, she worked her way up to become the store manager of the new Food City in Athens. She’s also right at home in North Alabama. A graduate of Rogers High in Green Hill, Andrea has a daughter who teaches kindergarten in Limestone County, and she’s enjoying one of life’s greatest blessings, being a grandmother. During our conversation, we talk about the remarkable history of Food City, from Navy veteran Jack Smith purchasing a Piggly Wiggly in Grundy, Virginia, to opening the very first Food City in 1955. We also discuss the incredible response to the Athens grand opening, support from local officials, what customers can expect, the new stores coming to Oneonta and the County Line Road area, Food City’s commitment to giving back to the communities they serve, and the incredible team members who have worked tirelessly over the past several days to prepare for and serve our community. Most of all, this is a story about opportunity. It’s a reminder that where you begin doesn’t have to determine where you finish. If you enjoy stories about hard work, perseverance, and people making a difference, I think you’ll enjoy this one! Real stories. Real people. Real impact. News That Unites!™

Make A Difference Minute: Rising Through Courage

On this Make a Difference Minute, I have Ron Adams, founder and president of the Rising Courage Foundation, as he shares how his own cancer journey inspired a mission to encourage others facing one of life’s toughest battles. Ron was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2014 and underwent surgery before entering active surveillance. Eight years later, he heard those life-changing words once again: “You have cancer.” As he sat through chemotherapy treatments during the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors weren’t allowed. Day after day, he spent hours in the treatment chair with only nurses, doctors, and other patients who were facing similar fears and uncertainties. It was during those quiet moments that Ron realized how desperately people battling cancer need hope and encouragement. He made a promise that if he made it through, he would use his own pain to help others. That promise became the Rising Courage Foundation, whose Courage Kits are designed to bring comfort, encouragement, and practical support to individuals undergoing cancer treatment, reminding them they are not alone in the fight. To learn more or support this mission, visit RisingCourageFoundation.org. The full interview will air at 9p CST/10p EST tonight. This MADM is brought to you by Bama Estate Planning by Attorney Harlan D. Mitchell, proudly supporting stories and the people who make our communities strong. Real stories. Real people. Real impact.
