    The Metal Forge - 348 - Stoned Jesus

    Stoned Jesus, formed by Igor Sydorenko in 2009, is a Kyiv-based heavy rock band influenced by Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Initially a solo project called "Stoned Jesus from the Outer Space," it was shortened for seriousness. Their debut album, "First Communion," was released in 2010, followed by "Seven Thunders Roar" in 2012, which included the iconic track "I’m the Mountain." In 2015, "The Harvest" demonstrated a move towards alternative and progressive rock. "Pilgrims" came out in 2018, showcasing mature songwriting. Plans for a new album in 2020 were delayed by the pandemic, and recording resumed in 2021, but was interrupted by the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, leaving the album incomplete. "Father Light" marks Stoned Jesus's debut with Season of Mist, showcasing their signature fuzzed-out rock and groove, complemented by Sydorenko's clean vocals and catchy choruses. "Mother Dark," intended as a darker follow-up, was shelved due to lineup issues. Igor Sydorenko then restructured the band, forming a new lineup with drummer Yurii and bassist-vocalist Andrew Rodin, post-relocation to Europe. With the 25th Anniversary Tour bolstering their momentum, Stoned Jesus is set to release "Songs to Sun," the first in a trilogy. This album blends metal, prog rock, and their most infectious choruses, unifying past and present sounds of the band.     The Metal Forge - 346 - Riastrad

    Riastrad was established in 2010 in Portland, Oregon, when guitarist Damion Lazzara collaborated with drummer Peter Bordokoff to record what would become the "Driving Into the Sun" EP. Following the recording, Peter was unable to continue with the project, but a mutual friend introduced Damion to drummer Lance Paden. Lance subsequently brought guitarist Justin Romito and bassist/vocalist Ryan Thomas into the fold, completing the lineup for the EP. This configuration performed together from 2011 to 2013; however, internal conflicts ultimately led to the band's dissolution. Fast forward to 2022, as the global COVID-19 pandemic began to subside, Lance reached out to Damion to reconnect and jam. After several sessions, they decided to revive Riastrad, enlisting Paige Parker on vocals, based on a recommendation from a mutual friend, and Todd Dehart on bass. This new lineup made its debut performance on December 23, 2023, and has recently recorded their first album, slated for release in the fall of 2025.     The Metal Forge - 345 - Bask

    Bask has called Asheville, North Carolina home for as long as they've been together. Drummer Scott Middleton and guitarist Ray Worth were already making some serious noise when they teamed up in 2013 with bassist Jesse Van Note and vocalist/guitarist Zeb Wright, who had just moved to The Land of the Sky. "We've been a band longer than we've been with our spouses," Van Note says with a gold-toothed grin. Even after 12 years in the same city, Bask still has a sound that's uniquely their own. They've shared stages with heavyweights like High on Fire, Black Tusk, and Weedeater, which has led some metal fans to label them as stoner rock. But it’s clear from the start that these guys are carving out their own path. Their album, The Turning, is deeply rooted in the natural sounds of Appalachia. You can hear the banjo poking through the heavier riffs in "The Cloth," like a black bear swimming upstream. "We all love heavy music, and half of us grew up around folk and bluegrass," Wright explains, "but this album really leans into that mix." The lead single, "Dig My Heels," kicks off with a solid metal foundation but then ventures into the lush, kudzu-covered fields of prog. "Scott called me out on this one," Worth laughs when asked about the song's origins. "Instead of writing to my riffs like we usually do, his drumbeat took the lead this time."
