040 - Dr. Mauro Zappaterra - MD, PhD, Cerebrospinal Fluid and Presence

Hello, my friends, please welcome Dr. Mauro Zappaterra to the podcast. I was thrilled to have a conversation with him this fall. His work grabbed my attention when I saw what he was doing with cerebrospinal fluid. This fascination had been heavily on my mind surrounding our breath and ways to better understand consciousness. I reached out to Dr. Zappaterra to peel into his perspective and the journey he's embarked on. He is clearly intelligent and passionate about his craft, but his curiosity and humility stand out immensely.  For more information, check out Dr. Zappaterra's website here and below: Mauro Zappaterra obtained his MD and PhD degrees from Harvard Medical School. He completed his PhD doing work with neuronal stem cells and the effects of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in brain development and in the adult. He is published in numerous scientific articles on the CSF and his work was chosen as the cover image for the prestigious Neuron Journal.  He was also featured in the New England Journal of Medicine in teaching medical students about living with life threatening diseases and in Psychology Today on an article titled "Joy: The art of loving life." He completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency at the UCLA VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, where he also served as Chief Resident. He is board certified in PM&R with a particular focus on optimizing human performance and decreasing suffering. He is the Director of Regenerative Medicine and Clinical Research at Synovation Medical Group and is a staff physician at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. He is co-creator and co-host of The PM&R Podcast, an independent project aimed at providing informational interviews with authorities in the field.   As a PM&R physician he combines his training in various complementary medicine modalities such as Polarity Therapy, Reiki and Craniosacral Therapy and attempts to treat each individual wholistically, integrating body, mind and spirit.  He researches and designs new programs and techniques to help alleviate pain, improve function, and increase quality of life.  He was recently voted by his peers as one of Pasadena Magazine's Top Docs for 2018.   Harvey Martin Instagram | @harveyjmartin X | @harveyjmartin Website | www.harveyjmartin.com Without Words: Mastering the Art of Being | Amazon | Barnes & Noble Breathe. 038 - Father Ben - Priest & Scholar

This week, we have Father Ben joining the show. He joined the Dominicans in the Summer of 2014 and spent seven years in formation for the Dominicans in Denver, St. Louis, and was at St. Paul's for his pastoral year in 2017-2018. After being ordained in 2021, he spent three years as a parochial vicar at St. Tom's in West Lafayette, the campus ministry for Purdue University. He has since relocated to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he currently resides.  Ben and I have a friendship that goes back to college. From those days to now, our relatioinship has been built on seeking truth and expanding our thoughts through faith. I have enjoyed watching Father Ben take his faith to the highest degree over the years and be a resource for many.  This conversation is a peek into the experiences we've had and spaces we've shared. I've leaned heavily on Ben throughout my adult life for understanding and comprehension of the Bible. I feel as though this meeting only scratches the surface of where we may go in the future. For now, this is our first recorded conversation, which I feel you will enjoy!  One love.    Harvey Martin Instagram | @harveyjmartin X | @harveyjmartin Website | www.harveyjmartin.com Without Words: Mastering the Art of Being | Amazon | Barnes & Noble Breathe.
