The Missing Links Golf Show

Missing Links Golf

The Missing Links Golf Show follows two guys in their early 50s with plenty of life experience, unfinished business, and one ambitious goal: to qualify for and compete in the NSW Amateur Senior Golf Championship. Each week, Steve and Andy share the highs, the lows, and the lessons from their pursuit of better golf. But this isn't just a golf podcast. It's about what happens when you decide you're not done yet. From practice sessions and tournament rounds to sports psychology, coaching, equipment, and the mental battles we all face, they explore how the game reflects life—and how the lessons learned away from the course can make you a better golfer. Whether you're chasing a lower handicap, a bigger goal, or simply proof that your best days aren't behind you, this is the journey for you.

Ep. 134 It Gets Ugly Before It Gets Better

Steve has officially found a coach. In this episode, Matt Woodbridge returns to the show—but this time with a very different role. After months of searching for someone who could provide more than another swing tip, Steve begins what he hopes will be a long-term coaching journey towards scratch golf. Rather than immediately changing mechanics, Matt starts by asking bigger questions: Where do you actually want to get to? What kind of golfer are you trying to become? What part of your game would you fix if you could only choose one? The answers aren't as simple as they seem. The guys dive into why most coaching stops at the symptoms instead of addressing the causes, why data can sometimes challenge what you think your weaknesses are, and how real improvement requires commitment long before the scorecard shows it. Later, they unpack the first technical changes from Steve's initial practice session—including two setup adjustments that immediately transformed his five iron from a leaking 150-metre fade into a solid 170-plus metre strike. But perhaps the biggest lesson wasn't technical at all... Sometimes the swing has to feel completely wrong before it becomes right. It's an honest conversation about coaching, trust, patience and the uncomfortable reality that meaningful improvement often gets worse before it gets better. Rock Factor The episode finishes with the debut of Steve's new original song inspired by the coaching journey—a fitting reminder that the biggest breakthroughs often begin with the discomfort of change. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join the fun by entering The Missing Links Yearly Championship to compete with Steve, Andy and other Pilgrims from all across the world. Ep. 133 When Going Low Get's Hard

Send us Fan Mail What happens when you suddenly find yourself four under par after nine holes? This week Steve and Andy welcome back fan favourite Mick Patterson for an episode that starts with an ordinary competition round before taking an unexpected turn into one of the most fascinating mental game discussions we've had on the show. Mick shares the story of a practice round where, despite arriving underprepared and without his usual routine, he found himself four under through the front nine. The conversation explores what changes when you're playing better than you've ever played before—and why closing out great rounds is often harder than creating them. The boys unpack: Why trying to hit the ball harder often makes you hit it shorter. How tempo and rhythm unlocked Mick's best ball-striking.The challenge of staying present when your score starts getting your attention.Practical techniques for returning to the moment using breathing, awareness and your senses. Why learning to be uncomfortable is part of becoming a better golfer.Later in the episode, Mick introduces his new golf simulator business, discussing everything from designing the perfect home setup to avoiding costly mistakes when building your own indoor practice space. To find out more about home golf simulators, contact Mick via 0410721864 or email mick@thesimstudio.com.au And of course, Golf Rock returns with another original song—this time dedicated to Andy Walker's long-running battle with Kooindah's infamous 13th hole. If you've ever wondered why your best golf disappears just when it matters most, this episode is for you. In This Episode Thursday's less-than-memorable competition round.Mick's remarkable four-under front nine. Why tempo beats effort. The psychology of protecting a great score.Flow state versus analytical thinking.Using your senses to stay present.Breathing techniques for pressure situations. Why experience is the key to learning how to go low.Inside Mick Patterson's new golf simulator business.Golf Rock: The 13th Owns Me.Quote of the Week "Stop thinking and come to your senses."Pilgrim's Challenge The next time you feel pressure building during a round, don't fight it. Instead, bring your attention back to something real: Feel your feet on the ground.Feel your hands on the club.Notice the trees moving.Listen to the birds.Take one slow, connected breath. Then simply play the next shot. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join the fun by entering The Missing Links Yearly Championship to compete with Steve, Andy and other Pilgrims from all across the world. Ep. 132 Playing to Win: Ryan Fox's Major Masterclass

Send us Fan Mail The final major of the year delivered everything—brilliant golf, controversial rulings, unforgettable moments and one of the best displays of championship composure you'll see. This week Steve and Andy unpack Ryan Fox's remarkable victory at Royal Birkdale, discussing the mindset that separates champions from contenders. They examine the crucial decisions that won Fox the Claret Jug, why one bogey may have been the best bogey of the week, and what every club golfer can learn from his fearless approach down the closing stretch. The conversation also tackles Bryson DeChambeau's rules controversy, Scottie Scheffler's fortunate break, the future of LIV Golf, and whether Australia deserves to host a major championship. Plus, they review the performances of the Australians, discuss the rise of Sam Burns and Cameron Young, analyse the latest Strokes Gained data, and ask whether the Australian Open really should be considered golf's "fifth major." In this episode:  Ryan Fox's fearless mindset on the closing holes  Why "playing to win" beats playing not to lose  The incredible bogey that kept Fox's tournament alive  Bryson DeChambeau's penalty and the fallout that followed  Scottie Scheffler's controversial free drop  What Sam Burns showed despite another near miss  Cameron Young continues knocking on the major championship door  Adam Scott, Lucas Herbert and the Australian contingent  Does LIV Golf still have a future?  Should Australia host a rotating major championship?  The latest Strokes Gained insights from Royal Birkdale  Why acceptance may be the ultimate competitive advantage Whether you're chasing scratch golf or simply trying to play with more freedom, this episode is packed with lessons that reach well beyond The Open. Listener Question When was the last time you truly played to win instead of playing not to lose? Ep. 131 The Pilgrimage Gets Serious: Inside Andy's Putting Revolution

Send us Fan Mail The golfing pilgrimage takes another major step this week. Before diving into golf, Steve and Andy wrap up the State of Origin decider, celebrate a Blues victory and debate the biggest talking points from the series—including bunker decisions, fingernails, Cameron Smith's post-match commentary and whether Queensland really "understands Origin." Back on the fairways, listener feedback clears up Andy's confusion over the Rules of Golf and the mysterious "general area," before the monthly Missing Links Championship results are decided with another dramatic appearance from the Dice of Truth. The main event is Andy's deep dive into improving his putting. After seeking out former tour professional Andrew Dodt for coaching, Andy undergoes a full SAM PuttLab analysis that exposes exactly what's happening during his stroke. The data confirms long-held suspicions, uncovers several surprises and ultimately leads to a big equipment decision that could transform his game. Steve and Andy discuss why understanding your own tendencies is more important than copying someone else's technique, and why the right equipment should work with your swing—not against it. To finish the episode, the boys debut another original golf rock anthem celebrating every golfer's journey: Golfing Pilgrimage. Question of the Week Have you ever had a proper club or putter fitting that completely changed your game? Or are you still fighting your equipment instead of letting it help you? Let us know in The Missing Links Golf Club on Facebook or send us a message—we'd love to hear your story. Ep. 130 The Return, The Reset & The 19th Hole Prophet

Send us Fan Mail After two months away from competitive golf, Steve returns to competition play with no expectations—just gratitude for being back on the course. What follows is a hole-by-hole story of resilience, rust, recovery and a reminder that golf often rewards the players who stop trying to force perfection. Along the way, Steve is joined by a very special caddie whose words of wisdom become the defining lesson of the day, while Andy helps unpack what really mattered about the round beyond the final score. The boys also preview the State of Origin decider, analyse Steve's strokes gained numbers, discuss why the driver finally behaved itself again, and explore how shifting your mindset can sometimes unlock better golf than endless technical work. The episode finishes with the debut of another original Missing Links Golf Show song: "The 19th Hole Prophet" — a tribute to every golfer who's ever solved everyone else's swing over a beer in the clubhouse. In this episode  State of Origin III predictions  Steve's first competitive round in two months  Playing golf with gratitude instead of expectation  Young Mr Hinks' surprisingly wise caddie advice  Escaping trouble without letting one bad hole become two  Strokes Gained breakdown from the round  Why reduced expectations can improve performance  Returning to single figures  Premiere of The 19th Hole ProphetMemorable Quote "It isn't bad. It is what it is. You're deciding it's bad." Final Thought Sometimes the score isn't the biggest win. Sometimes simply being back on the golf course, appreciating the people you're with, and remembering why you love the game is enough. And occasionally... that's exactly what allows the good golf to return. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join the fun by entering The Missing Links Yearly Championship to compete with Steve, Andy and other Pilgrims from all across the world. Ep. 129 The War Inside The Mind

Send us Fan Mail Andy returns from the Oatlands Seniors Championship with a scorecard he'd rather forget—but the numbers only tell part of the story. What begins as a tournament review quickly turns into one of the most honest conversations the boys have had about golf, confidence and improvement. Andy breaks down his round using Strokes Gained data, revealing just how costly an errant driver can be, while Steve challenges him to think beyond the score and examine what's really happening between the ears. The discussion explores a fascinating question every competitive golfer eventually faces: Do you earn confidence through preparation... or through experience? Along the way they discuss:  Andy's full tournament review from the Oatlands Seniors  Why driving accuracy completely dictated the score  How approach play remained a surprising strength  The impact of championship course conditions  Stable confidence versus fragile confidence  Whether tournament golf should be part of development—or the reward for it  Learning from poor rounds without letting them define you  Why chasing certainty in golf is a dangerous game  The value of preparation versus competition experience  A preview of Andy's new plans for fixing both his putting and driver The episode finishes with an original Missing Links Golf Show rock ballad, "The War Inside My Mind," capturing the emotional rollercoaster every golfer knows all too well. If you've ever walked off the course questioning your game—or yourself—this episode will remind you that every golfer fights battles that never appear on the scorecard.  Quote of the Week: "You don't rise to the occasion—you fall back on your preparation." Listener Question: When you're preparing for bigger tournaments, what's more important: putting in more practice before you compete, or gaining experience by playing more events? Ep. 128 US Open Carnage: How Wyndham Clark Survived Shinnecock

Send us Fan Mail The US Open delivered exactly what golf fans expect: brutal conditions, impossible-looking greens and a champion who simply refused to break. Steve and Andy unpack Wyndham Clark's remarkable second US Open victory at Shinnecock Hills, where a six-shot overnight lead almost disappeared before Clark steadied himself to claim another major title. The boys discuss the incredible scrambling display that proved decisive, the mental resilience required to survive the final round, and why one shot on the 16th hole may have changed the entire tournament. The conversation also dives into the unique challenge of Shinnecock itself. From massive fairways to terrifying green complexes and late-afternoon Poa Annua putting surfaces, this was a golf course that punished even the slightest mistake. Elsewhere, the lads discuss:  The growing problem of poor spectator behaviour in professional golf.  Sam Burns' latest major heartbreak and whether his breakthrough moment is still to come.  Scottie Scheffler's quiet challenge and why chasing majors may not suit him as much as leading them.  Adam Scott's extraordinary achievement of 100 consecutive major appearances.  The disappointing week for the Australian contingent.  What the latest strokes gained data tells us about the real keys to scoring on the toughest courses in the world. Plus, a reminder that while putting matters, elite ball striking continues to separate contenders from everyone else. A US Open packed with storylines, controversy, resilience and a timely lesson about what it really takes to win when par is a great score.
