    Can We Really Control AI Minds?

    This week I’ve discovered clear evidence that current prompt engineering methods might be wrongheaded. But instructing AI with endless prompts of ever increasing lists of brittle rules and deterministic directives is apparent best practice.     Why an AI Can't Say "I Don't Know"

    I have a theory about why LLMs rarely say “I don’t know” or “I’m not sure” that is yet to be disproved. In my ongoing building with AI I’m trying my best to disprove this theory.     What Am I Building With AI...and Is it Intelligent?

    Enough with this AI fortune-telling already. Certainty is beguiling of course; it feels so much better than that persistent gnawing doubt in the pit of your stomach. But creating false certainty is way worse than accepting what we don’t know. In an attention economy, prediction creates hype. Hype forces us to react “for or against”; hype polarises. More reaction equals more engagement - an irresistible incentive for self-appointed prophets to conjure ever wilder prophecies. Then, “something” happens. Upon this febrile battlefield the warring tribes seize upon this new weapon as proof their prophecy is coming to pass. The prophets pronounce… The pundits pontificate… The masses wail… About what hasn’t happened. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so dangerous. Because this deafening noise distracts us from the real, urgent problems we can and must solve now. So let’s take a step back, put our pitchforks away, and breathe. To decide what to do next, let’s not obsess over what hasn’t happened - so we can focus on what has. * Explain the present… * Through the lens of the past.
