    An Oral History of Judge Dredd #1

    Judge Dredd has been continually published since 1977, and has had some of the most creative minds to ever work in comics tell his tale. As a result, there have been some out-of-this-world story beats woven into the fabric of the character. We thought it's be interesting to talk with the writers and artists behind Mega-City One and see what their favorite bits of Dredd's history are. This week Arthur Wyatt and Henry Flint take us out into The Cursed Earth to hunt for a tale that can never be published again!

    Arthur Wyatt and Henry Flint

    For today's episode Mike sits down to chat with Arthur Wyatt and Henry Flint, the creators behind the Dredd movie sequel that begins in this week's Judge Dredd Megazine. Titled Dredd-Underbelly, the story takes place roughly one year after the events of the movie. While busting up a human trafficking ring, Judge Anderson finds that there's more to this operation than originally thought. It quickly becomes apparent how grim things can get in the underbelly of Mega-City One, and Judge Dredd is brought on board to help get to the bottom of things. Don't miss this story!

    A little interview duet for you today: artist Ethan van Sciver and writer Charles Soule! Harry caught up with Ethan at the artist's signing at Baltimore's own Collector's Corner this past Fourth of July weekend, while Greg sat down with Charles at HeroesCon back in June. Keep those dates in mind when listening, so if you're wondering why they weren't asked about such-and-such project, chances are it hadn't been announced at the time of the interview.     Joe Casey

    This episode Mike and Greg sit down to talk with writer extraordinaire Joe Casey. On Wednesday July 3rd Joe's latest work, Catalyst Comix will be hitting shelves. Along with artists Paul Maybury, Dan McDaid and Ulises Farinas, Catalyst Comix is the latest re-imagining of characters from Dark Horse's Comics Greatest World line. Joe has taken what is almost an anthology approach to this title, splitting each issue into three parts to show the entire cast of characters dealing with one central event. This book is chock full of cosmic superhero action and is certainly not to be missed.

    Maryland Free Comic Book Day Preview

    As this is Free Comic Book Eve's Eve, we're putting up a little audio preview of what you can expect at two of Maryland's best comic shops this coming Saturday! First, Collector's Corner's own Andrea (aided and abetted by owner Randy) gives us the rundown on what they have planned, and then Third Eye Comics' Steve makes a return appearance to the show to tell us about his store's plans. But there's more! Both shops are planning their own local events: Collectors Con (May 11th) and Annapolis Comic Con (June 29th). Information on both of those in included here for your benefit.     PJ Holden

    Today Mike sits down with artist PJ Holden. You've seen PJ's work all over the pages of 2000 AD, as well as in the Image series Fearless. This spring, along with writer Si Spurrier (X-Men Legacy, The SImping Detective), he'll be bringing us the tale of a very bureaucratic afterlife in Numbercruncher. Hitting shelves this May, Numbercruncher is the story of the brutish Bastard Zane, mathematician Richard Thyme, and their afterlives in the Karmic Accountancy. PJ tells us all about the series, the classic movies that inspire his storytelling, his life-long love of Judge Dredd, and more this episode.

    Eric Nolen-Weathington & Jim Amash

    Today, Greg talks with Jim Amash & Eric Nolen-Weathington of Twomorrows Publishing, the company that brings you such great comics retrospectives as the Modern Masters series and other creator spotlights. While getting a look behind the curtain on that series, Greg also talks with Jim & Eric about the recent Matt Baker release MATT BAKER: THE ART OF GLAMOUR, a 192-page hardcover recounting the life and displaying the art of the virtually unknown African-American artist of the 1940's and 50's. A lot of work went into this important release (which can be previewed at http://tinyurl.com/67cgcca) and you can hear about it here. And finally, the talk turns to Jim Aparo and the still-forthcoming book looking back at his life and career.

    Dirk Manning

    Today, Greg sits down with writer Dirk Manning to talk about writing horror and the horror of writing. OK, maybe it's not THAT bad, but they do discuss Dirk's guide book to the aspiring comics creator WRITE OR WRONG, and how its "tough love" approach is exactly what someone starting out needs. Dirk's story in the first issue of DIA DE LOS MUERTOS is discussed, as well as his works NIGHTMARE WORLDS, LOVE STORIES ABOUT DEATH, and TALES OF MR. RHEE. All this...AND the identity of the musician Dirk describes as his "God" and why that person's approach to music is a good example for any creative person to follow.

    Jim Rugg and Jasen Lex

    Today Mike welcomes Jim Rugg and Jasen Lex to the show! Most everyone knows these guys for their cartoonist and illustration work, but now they've joined the esteemed ranks of podcasters, as well! The first chunk of the talk focuses on Jim and Jasen's outlook on interviewing and journalism; for example, how editing can affect the portrayal of a subject. Their show is called "Tell Me Something I Don't Know," and it appears twice weekly over at BoingBoing.net. Their first episode to appear on Boing Boing is an interview with co-founder of Fantagraphics, Gary Groth. The guys also have a year's worth of previous episodes available through iTunes. This was a really great, light-hearted talk with some awesome, thoughtful dudes, and is well-worth the next hour of your life.
